  2. I was able to run the hotsync program in compatible mode, now I need to actually connect the palm and try to hotsync. Hubby was asleep and the sounds the palm makes when you sync wakes him up! Thank you for all of your suggestions. I may be on the way to getting this all worked out.
  3. My paperless caching setup has fallen victim to the advancement of technology at home. I had been using a WinXP laptop and an old Palm PDA with CacheMate installed on it. Now that I've taken the leap to a new laptop with Win7(64bit), I cannot find software to sync the PDA to get caches loaded on it. I do not have a smartphone and I use a Magellan Explorist 210 GPSr. What options for paperless caching are there for me now?
  4. just a reminder that if you are using a GPS designed for use in a car, you might need to see about changing it to pedestrian mode so it doesn't try to force you to stay on a road. good luck getting started, keep us updated on how your search for caches goes as well as the search for a GPSr.
  5. I'm of the same mind as knowschad on this. We will hold a branch on occasion but I'm usually behind Hubby and I don't follow very close to him since he tends to 'forget' (I don't know how he could forget me!) I'm there as he's fighting his way through a thicket of brambles and will let them fly!
  6. You tell a great story. I hope if you ever find one of my caches you write a story like that in your log. Have fun!
  7. Howdy! And Welcome!
  8. I just ran a speed caching trail this Sunday. My tally for the day = 139. The trail runs along the C&D Canal in Delaware and the caches are about .10 mile apart and they are placed along both the North and South sides. It was a great experience with my Hubby and a good friend. While 100+ days aren't my normal caching routine, I truly enjoyed my day.
  9. No fancy equipment but... remember to carry a water bottle with you and maybe even some type of trail food (nut mix, granola bar). We have found ourselves on a 'short walk' that ended up taking 2 hours, with no water or food! Never again.
  10. If someone would like to sponsor us, we'll try to make the 40,000 in a year. My husband would be all for it. Let's plan the attempt for the year 2015. PM me if you are interested in sponsoring us!
  11. I 'taught' Geocaching to some Girl Scouts this summer. The ages of the attendees ranged from Girl Scout Daisys (age 5) to Girl Scout Seniors (teens). The camp we were using has a few GPSr's pre-loaded with the private caches hidden on property (not published on any of the websites). I showed the girls how to use the GPSr's and select the next cache to find. Even the youngest of the groups were able to do this with minimal help after a few turns. for the younger group, I explained how there are imaginary lines around the earth and the numbers were the secret codes of where the lines crossed. The older girls understood longitude and latitude. I did not address how to log found/DNF caches on the website. I only told them that they would normally do that if they wanted to Geocache for real. I understand there is a new Girl Scout Junior Geocaching badge due out anytime. The books are not yet widely available at this time.
  12. As a cacher who get a PI rash from petting cats and dogs that have been in it, I'm lucky to have a hubby who doesn't (at this time) react to it. I have DNF'd caches because of the PI when hubby hasn't been with me. I use Ivy-Dry and hydrocortisone to help calm with itch. It also helps to run HOT HOT water over the effected area for as long as I can tolerate it (usually done right before applying one treatment or the other). I have had to take steroids at least four times in my like due to PI rash. PI can be tricky to identify. I agree with the person saying that you develop a sense about it.
  13. Google for 'geocaching statistics generator'. You'll find a few options in there. Take a look at my profile, I use a geocaching statistics generator that returns that DeLorme Stats you are looking for. As a matter of fact, you can pick which states you want to display for that particular challenge. BTW - I've been looking at some of your caches for a run this fall. We are just over the state line in MD. Karen
  14. Is is possible that you are limiting the number of caches returned by the PQ and this one just doesn't make the list because the PQ reached its limit?
  15. I wish my kid thought Geocaching was cool. I love it, him... not so much. Have fun with the kids and the game.
  16. I keep reading in logs and on these forums about Cache Challenges like a counties challenge and an alphabetic challenge among others. Where do I find out more about these challenges?
  17. We have three cats that stay at home while we Geocache. They aren't at all supportive of our hobby since they are left alone while we go. Once we were looking for a cache in an area of woods that was in desperate need of a CITO event and my Hubby lifted a piece of plywood to look under it for the cache. He let out a scream like a little girl and jumped back about 6 feet. When he recovered his senses, we lifted the plywood again and discovered a litter of kittens. The cache was not there and we didn't take any of the kittens with us, already having 3 cats at home.
  18. Sounds like you've got it covered. Have fun and report back when your trip is over. We'd all love to hear any good stories. p.s. just thought you might need yet another reminder - mark the location of the car. LOL.
  19. check out the pinned topic 'Frequently Asked Questions' at the top of the Getting Started Forum. A muggle is simply someone who isn't a geocacher (yet).
  20. +1 It does rather sound like a good time. Now if there were just some broken glass or some poison ivy you'd be all set. Thou shalt not speaketh of the nasty PI! I have a severe case of it right now. Going to pick up a prescription for prednisone on my way home. I know; off topic, couldn't resist. back to the regularly scheduled program....
  21. We have placed one cache and it went missing. There is a cache thief in our area , we think he/she took it, not a muggle.
  22. I'm so glad I snuck a minute to read a forum topic or two this afternoon. This made me chuckle! Thanks for the entertainment. If you are ever on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, please look me up. I'd love to spend a day caching with you. No public transportation.
