larakitten, welcome to you as well! Karen

I think I've walked into one or two of those over the years. I've come out of the woods covered in ticks. I've resorted to using a lint roller to remove them all. Oh... Eeeewwwww!

Welcome to the sport/hobby/whatever you want to call it!

What interesting things other than caches have you found.
mdplayers replied to Bassbully's topic in General geocaching topics
We found kittens once. We were searching in an area that was being used by local teens for a 'fort' hang-out area. There was some plywood laying on the ground. When Hubby lifted the corner to peak under to see if the cache was there, he jumped about 3 feet in the air and screamed like a girl. We then lifted the plywood again, bracing ourselves for the attack, and found a litter of kittens. They looked healthy so we left them alone. -
i had a similar problem a few weeks ago. It seems there was some problem with the caches as they were loaded into my GPSr originally. I don't know what would have happened, I didn't load them myself. I was at an event and someone there loaded them for me. I think I edited the text file and fixed something, maybe spacing?, and then the field notes would upload. I use a Garmin Oregon 450t.

I think the caches that require a UV light are a regional thing. I have found nearly 1000 caches and have never seen one requiring a UV light to find. I am on the DelMarVa Peninsula. We carry an extending magnetic pickup tool (never used it yet), an extending mechanics mirror (used it once), a pen (always use it), hand sanitizer, plastic bag for CITO, bug spray, water!, hiking stick (used to move prickle bushes out of the way, swat down spider webs, etc), flash light (have used it a few times).

is 'cash-ay' like 'tar-jay' (Target stores)?

I don't have a list for all of downtown, just the two I found on my one night trip. GCMDAX and GC8FBF. Both were 'must see'. I was staying at the Omni hotel and walked to both.

There's a special Query just for 'My Finds'. on the Pocket Query page, below the grey line that says 'My Finds' there's a button that reads 'Add to Queue'. Click that and you'll get your finds in a query.

Congratulations Stormgren-X ! I've been following your SPOT and now have enjoyed the video of the find. Thank you for allowing all of us to follow your journey.

Never mind. I found that the caches that were uploaded to the GPSr at the event weren't formatted correctly and when I marked them as Found the file wasn't written correctly. Some experimenting with the file got it working. Thanks anyway.

I'm using an Oregon 450t and have uploaded field notes in the past with no problems. But today, I attended an event and had someone upload geocaches to my GPSr and tonight I'm ready to upload my field notes but when I click the Upload button on Geocaching.com, nothing loads. Any suggestions?

87 finds in a day..was it worth it?
mdplayers replied to PACSGUY's topic in General geocaching topics
I did one power trail. It was worth it, as an experience. I enjoyed the day with Hubby and a friend. We had a great time. Would I want to do power trails repeatedly? No. But it was worth it that once. -
1. Garbage left in caches. Saturday we found one with an open artificial sweetener packet and a bottle cap in it. 2. People keeping GeoCoins and Travel Bugs.

Regarding the sentence I've bolded... only the first stage would have to have the coordinates visible to geocachers. The coordinates of the intermediate and last stage can be hidden from view allowing you to use the stories and instructions you mentioned in your original post to lead the cachers around from that known (because of the coordinates) starting point to your final box where the logbook is. Steel boxes?! I hope they are ammo cans! We love ammo cans. Weather resistant and sturdy to a fault. Keep working on this. I wish I lived close by so I could do this when you get it finished.
-
Sounds like fun! You could list this as a Multi giving the coordinates of the first stage which holds the instructions for the second, which holds the instructions for the third and so on. Since you aren't a Geocacher yourself, I suggest working closely with your friends that Geocache so they can help assure your cache meets the guidelines set by Groundspeak and that your containers are suitable. "Listing Guidelines for All Geocaches Technical Requirements Listings must contain accurate GPS coordinates. You must visit the cache location and obtain the coordinates with a GPS device. GPS usage is an integral and essential element of both hiding and seeking caches and must be demonstrated for all cache submissions. Projecting waypoints from a specific location already defined by set of coordinates is permissible. For geocaches that include additional waypoints see the guidelines specific to those cache types." "Additional Listing Guidelines for Specific Geocache Types. Not all geocache types have additional guidelines, and guidelines that cover all geocaches still apply. For all cache types that have multiple stages, physical elements (tags, containers, or any physical addition to the location) must be added to the listing as Additional Waypoints. Traditional Caches Multi-Caches The coordinates posted at the top of the cache listing are for the first stage of a multi-cache. Provide the coordinates of all subsequent stages of the multi-cache by using the Additional Waypoints feature. If you do not want the coordinates for the additional stages displayed to the public, mark them as "hidden." Only the cache owner, reviewers and Groundspeak lackeys can view hidden coordinates. "

Sorry to hear your first try wasn't successful. Hopefully once you get your new GPSr you'll make that first find.

What does your geocaching map look like?
mdplayers replied to scottmcblane's topic in General geocaching topics
not much around here... -
They should also make it mandatory that all caches use a 55 gallon drum painted international orange, Geo-piles are not allowed, it can't be behind a large object that could obscure the view, it must not be in an area with tree coverage, it can not be published until the satalite image is updated, it must have a proximity alarm in it that activates and audio/visual alert system when you get within 50 feet of it, it will have to fill out the log for you and read your mind to access details of your search that it will then use to upload your log to GC.com ensuring there are no TFTC logs and it will use multiple cameras to take pictures of your search and upload those as well. Oh and it will be loaded with pre-approved high dollar SWAG items and unactived TB's and GC's for each finder. Seeing the cache in a satalite view is good enough to log it and your rewards will be shipped to you.\ Or....you can stick with LPC's and let those that enjoy the puzzles do them. where's the 'Like' button?!
-
More and more the SWAG in caches has been getting poorer and poorer. We might see something cool once in a while, but not in every cache. We've seen cute little finger puppets, McToys, pencils, action figures, hotwheels cars. Some other non-toy stuff has been CD's, a gizmo to attach a waterbottle to a belt, 'off' wipes, spare batteries. for trades... Time to clean out the toy box! Got any hot wheels cars in good condition? How about play jewelry? Those so-last-year action figures? Short of that, go to the dollar store and pick up some army men, party packs of puzzles etc.

I found my caching buddies by attending events. Several of us lone female cachers happened to be at an event a few years ago and joined forces for some post-event caching. We exchanged contact information and several of us still cache together. Then this past fall two of us were at an event together when another lone female cacher came to the event and asked to join our table. We've cached as a group several times since. My advice... attend events. Talk with other cachers there. Don't be shy; tell everyone you are looking to join a group for some post-event caching. Good Luck and Good Caching!

I've been using my Oregon 450t for about 6 months now and really like the paperless caching features and touch screen. I haven't used any other Garmin's to compare for you.

What was your first geocaching log?
mdplayers replied to gpsblake's topic in General geocaching topics
This is our first find! I just learned about Geocaching this past weekend and decided to try it tonight. There were four of us and we looked and looked. The youngest (13) found it! Great Fun, I think we are all hooked. Took the TB, left a bobber. The cache has since been archived.
