  4. Donating to Jeremy was an option. For several months. Unfortunately, many of us meant to donate, but it was easy to put off. I am not a member of paypal and didn't have an inclination to join. So, I never donated money. Becoming a member of geocaching.com and making sure this site didn't diminish or become to expensive for one person to bear was the deciding factor for me. Members only caches played NO part in my decision. I am not even sure we have any in our area. I do understand why Jeremy IS trying to give back something to his members. We will never agree 100% on how things should be run. However, I am only a member not the owner. I didn't start the site and it isn't mine. I do think it is basically a well run site with good family values and constantly upgraded options. As far as Jeremy making a living at Geocaching.com.....why not? He had a good idea, it took off, people enjoy what he had to offer and he implemented a great idea. If I had thought of it and put as much time and effort in this site, I wouldn't feel guilty trying to make it pay off or at the very least, pay for itself. I sent a check, I didn't use paypal...(I don't like the auto renewal) LOL, my gripe. But that is the least of my worries, I had options. I hope everyone will lighten up a bit and enjoy a great hobby and website. Personally, I would like to thank Jeremy for giving me hours and hours of great fun, new friends and helping me overcome my fear of snakes and spiders!!!! I have seen places in my own backyard that I would have otherwise never known existed. Happy caching.....hope to see you out there! Picnic is being planned for our local geocachers (and anyone else that would like to meet some great people)

  8. I guess Jeremy is just doing the best he can. Can't keep everyone happy all of the time. On the other side of the coin, what if people paid their money and didn't get anything....would they be unhappy too???? I guess the best thing to do it is sign up and just don't use the option of members only.

  16. quote:Originally posted by Durango: I've been looking at some "heavily cached" urban areas on the cache maps. Some areas have 20 different caches within 500 feet of a freeway. Is this really what geocaching is all about? (Remember location, location, location?) Is it possible that there will one day be too many caches? Is this a fad that will die out with many people, leaving thousands of caches scattered like so much litter? I hope not, but your thoughts? I think your concern is valid. I think most responsible geocachers will agree that when you place a cache, it becomes a bit like a child. It is your responsibility. This is why I have placed only about 8-9 caches. This is really the amount right now that I can afford to maintain reasonably. During the summer I might be able to handle a few more. I have only placed one cache out of the area, and I asked a local geocacher to adopt it for me. He agreed, and I feel safe in knowing that the cache will never turn to trash in Hawaii. I think if you decided not to cache anymore, or if it just sort of dies out of your life, it is YOUR responsibility to find an adoptive parent or pick it up and archive it. Yes, I am sure there are going to be a few people that neglect to retrieve them. If you find a cache in bad shape, or seems to be abandoned, then we must take the responsibility to email the owner. If there is no response, you could email Jeremy and get permission to pick it up and have him archive it. As far as the urban caches go, I am not a great lover of looking for them unless there is a specific challenge that goes along with it. I have done a few, and really enjoyed them (William Tell) for one. But, as long as they are cared for and maintained....well I say "whatever floats your boat". I am not a great supporter of placing a certain amount of caches for how many you have found. I think it promotes cache dumping. Place with care and maintain your caches carefully!!!

  18. I have sent my check in for membership. The reason I did this is I don't care for the auto-renewal. I joined because I feel that Jeremy should be compensated for the money he puts in to this website. I think with all the lost time from his work and money and time he puts into keeping the geocaching.com site running, a fee of $30.00 isn't much to ask. I have mixed emotions about the members only caches....I guess for me the jury is out. I do however understand Jeremy's desire to give something to the cachers that want to support THEIR site. If it was fee for play only, I might have more of an issue with it. So, I supposed I am beating a dead horse here too. The decision has been made and I agree with what has been done, but opinions are like.....well you know the rest. And thanks Jeremy once again for all the great upgrades to the site.

  20. I just went through my pics and I can't believe that I don't have one of The 19th and his nephew.... He must have been up taking pics the same time I was. Are you camera shy, The 19th??? Really a great get together...It has me ready to get out there again and geocache. The final total for our dinner was 48. We have a great Sacramento group. Thanks Doc, you did great!
  21. I was up in the Santa Barbara area last week. A fun little cache to do in a beautiful area is "Nojoqui Falls Park". This cache is in a beautiful little park off of 101 just south of Buellton. If you want to you can keep going down the highway and end up in the town of Solvang or even better Santa Ynez. The cache itself is just a few hundred feet from parking, but if you wanted to stretch your legs there is a short hike up to a beautiful waterfall area. (A little dry right now due to drought) But the waterfall is covered in moss and the walk is full of ferns and moss. Stay on the path because there is poison oak off trail. Hope this makes your trip a little less stressful.
  22. This is getting spooky....where is everyone??? LOL
