  1. Thanks for the replies it's not that big of a deal. I just thought I was zeroing in on 800 after 5 years, but guess not. I'll see if I can get 800 in the next 5 years!
  2. I did not take any offence whatsoever to what you had said. When I log on, in the top right corner where it shows your username and membership status, it also show the smiley face and the number of caches. In my case it was 783 until I added the last 15. I'll do the GSAK thing and see if I recognize any missing
  3. I know I've screwed up a couple of times. It's happened twice that I can recall. I really screwed up last year and duplicated several but deleted the duplications so it was correct. I have never received any deletion notifications. I know when I started to input my recent caches I had 783 and all was in order. I did duplicate two in the new caches and deleted the duplicates almost immediately. When I input those two I thought I hadn't hit the submit button but obviously I had and ended up duplicating them. During the process I noticed my count dropped to 741. With being a member since 2007 and only 783 caches it's obvious I'm not into "stretching" the numbers. It's just personally I was closing in on 800. Thanks for any input.
  4. I started to post some recent caches. I did have 783 total. I added 15 more caches and now my total has dropped is only 741. It should have been 797. What happened??
  5. Thanks for the thoughts. It would be nice but I don't think it will serve the purpose with a screen that small. The cost of the marine charts is $ 150.00 so I'm not prepared to spend that much money on something that has less that a 50/50 chance of being useable. As I stated earlier it would be nice if Garmin put out a trial version.
  6. I am very familiar with paper and electronic marine/nautical charts but that is the crux of my concern. The Etrex screen is so small as to make it useless as stated. When you toggle in for more detail you are only seeing a very small parking lot size of ocean. I also hoped it may be large enough to see depth contours to find fishing holes. I wish they would produce a trial copy so I could give it a test run.
  7. This may belong in off topic but... I am looking at Garmin HUS039R marine charts for my eTrex20. Would be handy in a Kayak etc. Has anyone tried them? They come in a mini SD format and are compatible with Etrex 20 & 30. My concern is that the screen is so small it may be virtually useless. Anyone have thoughts?
  8. I have that one and it seems pretty basic. For example I would like a better explanation of GPS vs GPS/GLONASS is there any advantage to either? Why do I have an option to turn WAAS off? I thought it was good thing is there a time when I should turn it off. As well I don't understand the USB Mode of either Mass storage or Garmin storage. Why would I need to choose. These things I don't understand and would like to know. After I did the reload of the 2.40 it seems to be working better. I can get to the page with the geocache information and can now mark a geocache as found. Time will tell. If someone can tell me how to do a hard restart I will try that once if it gives me any more problems after that Garmin can deal with it. I am now past the point of wondering if it's me not doing something right or the GPS acting up. I know it has been the GPS acting up
  9. How do you do a hard reset. I was going to do that and start all over but I just overwrote the existing 2.40 that I had installed originally. I don't have much info to lose by doing a reset. BTW is there a better owners manual than the one that installs it seems to be pretty basic
  10. I am not having any joy with my new etrex 20. The first thing I did was to upgrade to 2.40 o prevent the problems people where having downloading queries. I was able to download fine but it lost the 900 or so caches I had stored in it twice. I have not been happy with the accuracy and when you got near GZ and walk slowly to zero in it locks on a distance and stays there randomly pointing the compass which makes it impossible to continue. I have a very old etrex yellow and it never has done that and actually has been much more responsive in side by side comparison. I could also not get to the hints, past logs, or other info. When I tried to log the cache as found I would get to the "view geocache" screen and when I tried to open that it just jumps back to the main menu. If you are trying to do paperless caching it is useless to not be able to mark them as found because the Gps will try and take you back to that cache until you are more than half way to the next. Twice now I've ended up just leaving the 20 in the vehicle and going with the old Etrex yellow. Fortunately I had downloaded the caches and printed out the GSAK pages. I now have reloaded 2.40 to see if that helps and if it doesn't Garmin can have it back. I'm fed up with it.
  11. I have been disappointed with my 20 as well. It has locked up when nearing a cache and no matter which direction I walk it just stays frozen. It does eventually start again. I'm also not impressed with the accuracy. It is no better than my 10 year old yellow etrex. I haven't used it in heavy cover but was told there would be no comparison to my old GPS.
  12. I used a GPX folder and the first thing I did when I got the Gps was to upgrade to 2.40. I did see the thread about the problem Garmin had with 2.3 and they then came up with 2.40. I didn't order the GPS until that seemed to be behind them. The strange thing is that the caches disappeared for several hours and then when I tried at home later they where there and are still there. I've turned the GPS on and off several times now and it's fine. The first time I lost them they maybe would have reappeared as well but I just assumed they where gone for good and reloaded them.
  13. To load the caches I used a pocket query with about 450 caches in each query then downloaded that file onto my etrex 20
  14. Well Duh!! I just took out the SD card and everything is still up and running so everything is stored internally.
  15. I believe but am not certain that the first time it did it I had not put an additional card in yet. I have put a card in since and so the second time there was a SD card in place. OK, now I just turned it on to find out where the caches where stored and low and behold everything is back. To tell you the truth I don't know where everything is stored and I'm not sure how to find it. Do I have a choice or does it just fill the internal memory and then start using the SD card. Sorry for my ignorance!
  16. I bought a eTrex 20 and it works alright. I've loaded about 900 caches on it and twice they have simply disappeared. No reboot, no new batteries help, I have to reload. All I get is a message saying no geocaches found visit geocaching.com etc blah blah blah. I haven't used it enough to know if it's me or something wrong with the GPS. I don't think it's me as there should be a verification screen to delete anything and I know that hasn't appeared. I updated the firmware when I got it. What was really annoying today is we where 30 miles into the desert and it failed. Fortunately I had my old yellow etrex and had loaded the caches in it otherwise it would have been a waste trip. Everthing else works on the GPS just the caches disappear. Any one else had this problem or have any advice or insight Thanks
  17. Thanks for that, seems everyone is waiting like me.
  18. This may have been covered already but a search turned up nothing. Garmin is introducing an updated series of etrex GPSr. there are three models 10, 20 and 30. It enables you to download a GPX file into the etrex and display all the details displayed like terrain, diffculty, hints, etc so it will be paperless. The release blurb mentions a website called "Opencaching.com" but not geocaching.com my question is--- Has anyone seen any reviews and capabilities on this new product. Supposedly released in late Aug this year
