  1. Exactly...A GPSr is just a RECEIVER. There is nothing about it that will interfere with any airplane instrumentation. The restriction or ban on their use in flight is silly.
  2. Don't take everything that's in there. If you take something, leave something. Do an even trade.
  3. On a quick caching jaunt over my lunch hour a while back, I went to try a cache at a park that turned out to be a homosexual cruising spot. Once I got there and saw what was occurring, I decided I really didn't need the smiley enough to stick around. Check my note on 2/23, and the followup note by Niffler on 3/11 Here
  4. Most definitely, after seeing that pic.....Those were always the accidents where there was a collective "OH, S***!!!!" from the crew as we pulled up! Yep. There were several wrecks I responded to that, before I was even out of the cab of the ambulance, I was telling dispatch to go ahead and put Lifeflight on hot standby. It is amazing the contortions extreme force can put on vehicles...HAHAHA...I too had not looked at the date...I didn't realize this was old news...LOL
  5. I can't precisely remember when I heard about it, initially. I think it was in the timespan between 2001 and 2002, when I was working a job that I hated and wasn't making any significant $$ at. I remember thinking it was cool, but money was so tight that there was no way to even consider buying a GPSr. My job fortunes took a decided upswing, and I revisited gc.com in spring of 2003. I decided to go ahead and buy a barebones entry-level GPSr to see if I liked the sport, and, more importantly, to see if I would stick with it. My Magellan Sportrak arrived on June 12, 2003, and Julia and I set out to find our first Geocache. 241 finds later, I do love the sport and have stuck with it. In fact, later this year, I have plans to upgrade to a much nicer GPSr and the Sportrak will become Julia's for the occasions when she accompanies me.
  6. I figured there probably were other threads on this topic. Thanks for the links to them and the other information on this. I really appreciate it.
  7. I am looking toward upgrading my GPSr around the end of the year. I presently have a Magellan Sportrak basic. I am debating between the Garmin 60c and the 76c. The major difference SEEMS to be (and please correct me if I am neglecting other things) that the 76 has more onboard memory. I had considered the CS models, but decided I don't really need the compass. The extra memory would be nice, but I am not sure I can necessarily justify it. I would be interested in hearing thoughts from people who have used both.
  8. The question isn't whether you're entitled to an opinion but how informed that opinion is. Which in this case is - not very. We weren't at GW3, so I guess our opinion is also "uninformed", but...PEOPLE, THIS IS A GAME! IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! When too much political BS and personal shots get brought into any process it breaks down. There are too many people here trying to turn the whole GW thing into their personal pi**ing contest. It's like watching emotionally constipated people having a slapfight. Events have something for everyone. The event may have been billed as being about the numbers. However, if that's not your bag, find someone else of like mind and socialize. If you're into numbers, go jump on a wagon train. Events are what you make of them. Granted, planning and executing one is hard work, but you people are taking this far too seriously.
  9. ehhhh...thought about going there...but I'll refrain...
  10. Maybe he was a primal cacher...marking the cache as "HIS"... y'know...pheromones and all that...
  11. Booknut- Any further word on the cause of your "blackout"? Another possible explanation is a fugue state. For more on that, go here
  12. I'm 35, on the downhill run to 36. Julia, the other half of the team is 34
  13. I could also read it. Granted, it is easier to read something with paragraph breaks, but it was readable. Quite a story...yikes.
  14. I had my funniest caching "injury" last summer...I was doing a fairly easy ammocan in the woods...I had gotten to the cache, and was literally reaching for it when a yellowjacket flew in and stung me on the upper part of my right ear. I aborted on that cache, but contacted the owner who allowed me to log it as a find anyway. Digging through previous logs, it turned out I was not the first to be stung. There must be a nest close by. I will say though, I do NOT recommend being stung on the ear...Lotta nerves there...painful place...
  15. Upon first glance at your post, I thought you said you made FTF tampons...my initial reaction, needless to say was Upon finishing reading, you have a GREAT idea there...
  16. Er... that's not politics. Be careful in "those" parks! You just made my breakfast turn a somersault...yikes...
  17. You crack me up, Jeremy. The sport is assuredly not dying. If anything, it is stronger than ever, at least in Atlanta.
  18. I also have a vest with numerous pockets and pouches which Julia got me for my last birthday. This lets me carry the essentials on my person without having to lug my caching bag with me wherever I go. The main bag usually stays in the truck when I go out. I refill pockets on my vest as needed from it. I have a battery pouch, a pouch for PDA, a pouch for GPSr, a pocket for a drink in the back, a clip for FMRS radio, and spare pouches for stuff like plastic bags and cache swag. It also has a pocket for pens. I wouldn't go on a serious cache run without it.
  19. Julia and I cache together a bit. She loves micros and is usually better at spotting them quickly than I am. The other caches which involve hiking she doesn't mind until the time comes to leave the trail and bushwhack, climb hills, etc. At that point, we break out the FMRS radios, she stays on the trail and cheers me on, and off I go to find the hide. More often than not, I cache alone or with other buddies. She has hobbies of her own (scrapbooking, crafts, etc.) that she devotes a lot of time to. My caching solo is never an issue with her. I'm blessed. Matt
  20. I agree with you. Our 3 chihuahuas come with us caching at times and they can be great little caching companions. Nacho Padre is my avatar. That's the wife's dog. Sierra Madre is mine, and Penny (Nacho and Sierra's daughter) kinda belongs to both of us.
  21. At least they didn't spell it "pubic place" Brings a whole new meaning to the term "treasure trail"
  22. We also use the zire 71 for paperless geocaching and photography purposes. Been using it for 6 months and have had very good success with it.
  23. And, I believe only 5-7 pounds to pull off an ear...
  24. Thanks for adding a bit of lightness to a pretty scary tale...
