  1. Has anybody tried the colorado with an external antenna? How does the GPS perform with the external antenna, versus it's own internal one? I find several faults with the Colorado: 1) The size and shape of the antenna should have been properly formed, being taller. 2) To see the screen better, the GPS usually is not being held as vertical as posible. 3) Not having a motion sensor in the unit, the GPS seems to pick up alot of Dirty Data. - A 3 Axis motion sensor would be a cool thing, but raise the price of the GPS to over $1000. - A position sensor would provide a Baseline, of what Signals to accept or reject. - Also with a position sensor the GPS would not become a Garbage Can of Dirty Data. As a side note, the GPS, with it's power hungry electronics, including the backlight, the GPS should have had no less than 3 AA batteries. With 3 AA's, the backlight would have worked better, and not be a drain on overall performance of operation. It would take a 2-year degree in college, just to really understand GPS Technology, or at least 1 year, for some people

  3. The FM Transmitter in my Fusic phone, and my Ipod adpator, are both underpowered. The LG Fusic only works up to 2 feet from the Digital Headphone radio. My friend's Nuvi 660 works good with my cellphone and his Car's radio.
  4. I could add columns to the chart for aiding this Paperless Geocaching project, or Email Excel 2003 spreadsheet to whoever needs it. EDIT: Columns added, would cover the capabilities and limitations, like which ones have a full satellite screen, and which ones are best for finding caches using high proximity values.
  5. I have not purchased a Nuvi yet, but spent some hours trying to figure out the best ones for use for this project, since I have not had success with the Garmin Coloradoes yet. I made a Garmin Nuvi Comparison chart below, using Excel, and I have a copy of it still in Microsoft Excel. It has been quite a painful process, trying to figure out which Nuvi is best for me, since I need one with Bluetooth, FM Transmitter for use with Car Radio, and Auto sorting of multiple stops.

When traveling it is important to know where the better Gas prices are, and Mapquest is a good place to search. http://gasprices.mapquest.com/ when you click on that enter in the Zip Codes or City and State of where you are geocaching, to find the Gas stations with the lower prices.   7. Crude Oil: 1 BBL (barrel) = 42 gallons (US) LINK I did a bit of research, and the numbers vary a great amount. Different efficiencies in the refining process, and the crude oils all over the Earth are of different qualities. The big problem with Oil, is the Supply side versus the Retail side of the Bussiness. The Supply side makes a killing, and the Retail Gas stations, make only a few cents on a dollar of gasoline.   8. Welcome to the Forums The 60CSx is the better built and more tested GPS, and I have one. The only problem is on occation the GPS starts up with bad data, and takes awhile to get the sats, but other than that, it has been working well lately.
  9. Last fillup May 18th at $4.059 per Gallon. The tank is close to the E, so I will be shocked next time I fill up. Overall MPG for the 2004 Chevy Malibu: 21.69 MPG

  11. I have been keeping track of mileage, and gas useage on my 2004 Chevy Malibu with 3.5 liter engine: Click > I live 5.5 miles from my workplace, and that is 11 miles a day. I have been riding my bicycle as much as possible, but on Tuesdays I drive a co-worker to work, and get groceries on the way back home, so it works out. The car is somewhat a hog, and may downsize sometime, but it gets me through the snow in the winter. Edited in: The chart above shows the $/Gallon for each fillup, but the first 2 or 3 lines at the top are slightly fudged due to lack of a mileage for those fillups, but the camera shows 34,195 and Sept 14th on one of my pictures, when the car was purchased that day.
  12. When I opened up the latest Bestbuy advertisement, it showed the Triton 400 on page 2, and I thought how strange, because they may have received a shipment for cheap, but I don't think I will buy a Triton from Bestbuy anyway.
  13. That is so funny, I also own a 37 year old Silva compass too. The only problem with Garmin car units, is that only the motorcycle Zumo's do tracklogging, and just called Garmin, and they said I had to get a Zumo 550, if i needed the tracklogging function.
  14. Wondering whats up with the Topo database that USAPhotoMaps uses, that it is missing many tiles in Michigan (Zone 16) ??? Odd stuff, I have been seeing missing tiles for months.

  16. I been wanting to post this for several years, and my sister calls up alot to go caching at caches, neither of us have found, and this is a very painfull thing to do. Is there a way to list caches on my account that another person has not found, so that when we cache that neither of us has gone to the cache? I tried finding ways to do this, and im about to quit this activity since GSAK is too much for me to handle. I tried playing with it and it is too complicated. So the important thing is to be able to within GEOCACHING.COM, to be able to list caches in my pocket queries against other user names, to filter out those caches they have found.
  17. I been through 3 Colorados, where the first one was a 400t, then a 300, then the 3rd one was a 400t, it messed up big time. Even after upgrading the 400t and doing a full reset, by pressing both soft key buttons and the power button to do the reset, the 400t was a big mess. The tracklogs were one unbroken mess, and the compass being turned off, kept causing problems, with it saying hold level, even when I turned it off. The GPS had Vers 2.51 loaded on it. Now my Map60CSx, which was a good GPS, had become a mess after upgrading the chipset software, with the clock keep getting reset to 03/31/2007 at 7:59:47 on many power ups, especially if it was off for more than an hour. The picture below is of the Map60CSx, with it's problems with the Date and Time, and problems with elevation, even with the GPS set to fixed elevation, the GPS was all over the place, as in the following photo.
  18. Does the PN-20 create a new tracklog segment each time it is turned on? If the GPS does not show you the same value on the Odometer/Trip Odom, as the last time you used it, as it is acquiring the satellites upon startup, then it sounds like it maybe depending on the tracklog itself to determine how far it has gone each second.(just guessing at this).   19. Is this problem on the Trip computer screen, or the Tracklog itself? On the older Magellans, the Trip computer screen would under report the distance, plus all Magellans, had one long unsegmented tracklog, you had to segment yourself, to see what you hiked, versus what you drove. I been through 3 Colorados, and the last one, had a big problem with the tracklog, even after a full reset, and loading the latest firmware. Some of the latest Garmins, have Trip Odometer problems like the Magellans, due to the Mediatek chip, I believe. The new eTrexes, and the Colorados, are having problems with accuracy, I believe, due to the Mediatek chip. A good all around GPS for many uses, like Autorouting and hiking, is the Map60CSx.

My last post > http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=3459651 That post of mine, is about the antenna on my 400t is not as good as was on any of my 60 series GPS units, I had a Map60C(very good gps), then a Map60Cx(Rcvr & power problems), and now a Map60CSx(Just about perfect). My 400t, that is going back, had problems with the trackpoints going way off in different directions, while hiking, and I did not hike at 75 mph, where several trackpoints yesterday had my feet going at highway speeds, and that was not just a few, but lots of random trackpoints, and also my tracklogs always where one continuous unbroken tracklog, even when I powered off then on again, so this GPS had a One Track Mind.
  21. Colorado 400t > 18Z013600 Bought yesterday at REI store #58, Northville, MI 48167 05/04/08 3:24 PM GPS had Version 2.40, and chipset 2.60. I upgraded it to Beta 2.51. The problems: Even after Master reset, I have problems with the Tracklog being one continuous track, without any breaks, and when walking, there are many jaggies in the tracklog off to the sides, where several random trackpoints show me walking up to 75mph on my feet. The compass when turned OFF, in the Setup Menu, still says HOLD LEVEL at random times. Another thing on Reception, is that this GPS was all over the place, and the antenna on these Colorados, is a shrunken stick type antenna, whereas the antenna on my 60CSx is a full sized stick antenna, and my 60 series GPS units all where good with reception and tracklogging. The biggest disapointment is that this 400t does not do segmented tracklogging, no matter what I do, I always have a single tracklog, unbroken. The tracklog problem persisted from V 2.40 to V 2.51, and through a master reset, so this GPS is going back.
  22. For something like this, you would need at least two of the high quality charging units, like the Maha, or the Lacrosse.
  23. The yellow eTrex should be more waterproof than the more expensive eTrex's that take a memory card. If there is dirt on the gasket between the GPS, and the battery cover, then water may get inside, and do more damage to the eTrexes that have a memory card. If the rubber band around your yellow eTrex is solid, not having received heat damage, the GPS should be fine. The yellow eTrex should be the better option for out on the water, then the more expensive units should have a higher level of protection against water intrusion. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-0-0-0-0--=-=-=-=-0-0-0=-=-=-0-0-0-0==-=-=---- The back cover of the Colorado's is shaped like an icecream scoop that can hold a bit of water, except for the hole in the cover where the latch is. Try it at home, with your finger over the latch hole of the cover, and the Colorado sitting in a safe place away from any water, take just the back cover, and scoop up some water, from a bowl, then dump it in a measuring cup quickly before water leaks through the latch hole. The shape of the Colorado's back cover holds enough water, that it can be forced into the battery compartment and/or the SD card slot at the bottom. What I am thinking is that the SD card slot itself should be sealed with a piece of tape, and that the SD card inserted is semi-permanant, until the next time you use a new piece of tape to seal off the SD card slot. The tape over the SD card slot should keep water out as the Scoop shaped cover is slid off, for if there is no tape, the cover being romoved, the water will enter the slot as the latch is popped open and the cover slid off. The backcover should have had better sealing out of water, and have drain holes at the bottom, so that water can't be forced past the SD-card slot gasket. ---------- The Colorado needs a better design against water intrusion.

Seems that when the eTrexes, and the 60 series gained a memory card (MicroSD), these GPS units also lost the electronics that had the alarm clock capability, so that when these units are off, they are really off, with no standby capability, so that there is no alarm clock or barometer that runs, when turned off, like with the eTrex Vista Cx and the Map60CSx. I missed the alarm clock when I upgraded from the Map60C to the Map60Cx. I don't think that software could compensate for the missing hardware in this case.
  25. My 60CSx has the same startup problems, so that I have to be standing still for a couple minutes, while the GPS is finding satellites, before I can start moving, or else it takes forever to lock on if I start driving too soon.
