  1. There are other nuvis with removable batteries, and Garmin needs to come out with an external battery charger, so that one or two batteries can be charged at once, also if people could develope a solar charger, that can take charging modules, such that you can charge Garmin nuvi batteries, AA batteries, and even cellphone batteries. Has there been any solar charger that could charge the eXplorist batteries? if so, there could be a way to keep some topped off batteries for the GPS units while on the trail.
  2. Sounds like this is a waterproofed version, with a lack of a speaker, like the regular speakers open to the air, like my Nuvi 260W, with all the holes on back for the speaker. I would like to see spoken street names, with a cigarette lighter adaptor plugged into the 500 series nuvis, with the spoken words on the car's radio.
  3. Rescued this thread from page 2. This would be an interesting macro for the new Nuvi 500 series, but I would like to see a wide version, like a nuvi 500w and 550w. A compass screen while navigating to a cache with this macro should be pretty cool, and no need of a separate GPS with a compass page needed.
  4. Now these should work well with pilotsnipes macro for True Paperless Geocaching on the Garmin Nuvi. I would like a Nuvi 580W with Voice prompts of street names, but also the ability to view pilotsnipes macro on a wide screen. I do like the idea of a compass finally on a nuvi GPS. Also Tracklogging is needed on these 500 series Nuvis.
  5. Seems like Dan Foster created the GPX format back in 2001: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/gpsxml/messages/1
  6. Looks like you probably got the eTrex Venture HC, and I believe it is a good GPS, and I have seen it get high reviews online. At Amazon dot com:
  7. I bought my 60CSx in Sept 2007, with the Chipset software 2.9, but when I updated to 3.0, it became a problem, with every 3rd boot up, comming up at 8pm Mar 31, 2007, and it takes forever to correct itself, even with an open sky. I have done a master reset, to no avil, so I just posted a new thread, asking about a GPS that is accurate, but also boots up quickly, so as not to waste gasoline.
  8. I have other GPS units, but I need a GPS that turns on quickly, so I can get driving in my car. I need it for recording the Tracklogs, Trip Distance, Time Moving , and Total Time. I am keeping track of Gas use, and want to track the 2004 Malibu's MPG, Total driving time between Fill ups, and average MPH, and how it relates to MPG. A chart I been working on: The car is only getting 22.0 MPG since I bought it, so I was interesting in a simple accurate GPS, that beside being close to being Instant ON, also accurate with it's Trip Odometer, Time Moving, and Time Stopped. Any Ideas?? Venture HC or Legend HCx? One reason I'm asking is my Map60CSx takes way too long, like a minute or more to boot up and lock on, but will occationally boot up at 8pm March 31, 2007, every 3 or so boot ups. I have done a master reset on it and it did not help.
  9. One of the cheapest HC models is this one: This one has an electronic compass, allowing you to sight the cache from several feet away. All the Garmins Ive had and still have, all seem to have a tendency to bounce around in a 40 foot error circle, and part of the blame, is the software that operates the compass page on the Garmins, but the biggest issue is the selective blocking of sattelites in the sky as you walk around. As you walk around, random sattelites are blocked by the tall trees, bouncing you back and forth, till you have at least a 40 foot circle of jumbled tracklogs, and all my Garmins have done this.
  10. Seems like the Oregon 300 is missing from the list below: http://www.rei.com/search?query=Garmin+Oregon I think I might get the Oregon 200 or maybe the Delorme PN-40.
  11. I almost was going to put some gas in the Tank and go over there to REI, but now that I read the posts here, I will leave the tank emty for awhile.
  12. The 60CSx is a more solid performer, but with an exception. I have both Map60CSx and 60Cx, and if they are not held relatively vertical, the 60 series will pick up, and use dirty signals, causing a wandering effect. Many times if my 60CSx was laying down, there was extreme wandering, but if I intentionally kept it at a 90 degree angle from the ground, 5 feet off the ground, the 60CSx was very accurate. When laying flat or near flat, the stick antenna of the 60CSx is more likely to "See" the bad signals, and use them, causing significant Wandering. My 60CSx, when held flat can travel miles, standing still, but when held vertical, it stays spot on, when standing still. The advantage of the HCx, is that it can be mounted flat just in front of you on your small water craft, much easier than trying to stand up a 60CSx on the small boat. One caution with the 60CSx, with the latest GPS chipset software, is that it will sometimes boot up with the date of 31 March 2007 @ 8pm, and to remedy this, is to just stay put for a minute, without moving, and it will correct itself, with starting a new tracklog, as it corrects itself, then it is safe to start moving. If you are moving, while you boot up the 60CSx, it can take a few minutes to find itself, causing a bit of the beginning of the tracklog to be garbage. Delorme is comming out with the PN-40 GPS, and it will have a high powered receiver, with an accelerometer, and 3-axis electronic compass, and hopefully the accelerometer can aid in better positioning, so the PN-40 GPS can get a better position fix. I am thinking of getting the PN-40 GPS, when it comes out. Check this out: http://blog.delorme.com/2008/06/25/announc...arthmate-pn-40/
  13. A Comparison Chart of the new Oregons: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?comp...compare=compare The list of Oregons: http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/c...2FACC64565F3993 Looks like the Oregon 200 is only a 24meg mem, that uses the MicroSD memory cards, and also this GPS is without the Compass or Barrometer, so it is a simplified GPS.
  14. Hopefully this thing will have at least 3 AA batteries, to better power the backlight, for this bigger screen than the 60's, 76's and Etrexes. This GPS should have at least 3.7vdc for powering the backlight. (Because these screens are more of a battery hog, than the smaller screens.)
  15. I guess I like the idea of this GPS, but with a hard shell over it, with the ability to flip open the hard front lense of the case, to use the touch screen, seems more compact than the Colorados. This post has been edited by GOT GPS?: Today, 02:33 PM One thing I liked about the Colorados, is the 3D screen, showing the route your taking going way off in the distance to give you a feel of what is ahead in your trip.
  16. One time ever: This cache: H. P. Bike Ride #7 GCW52A Looks like not much has happened so far. My "Needs Maintenance" log is still the last log on the page. When I did the Log, I first felt a little bit of guilt doing a Post like that, but the cache probably is still on the Ground, instead of attached to it's magnet on the metal object, up off the ground. Being on the ground I immediately thought of the Wayne County Parks dept. that would be using grass trimmers right around the spot. I have seen some discusting caches in the past, but never posted "Needs Maint" Logs before, but this one is in danger of being picked up by County Maint. or somebody else.
  17. Check out this link: http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_tracklo...n-oregon-h.html I think the 300, 400c, 400i and 400t of the Oregons, will replace the problematic Colorados, just my guess. Seems like the Oregon might replace the Colorado, also it says it is probably an inch shorter. -------------------- Now how about a Garmin Michigan, but this GPS would be in two parts, where they will only work if they are connected by a half inch wire.
  18. I was browsing through the caches in my area this morning and came apon this one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...ed-647258bb60ae After coming across this image, I had to create this Topic Thread here. --------------------- Post any pictures of interesting potholes you came across while Geocaching. Would you be able to post a funnier one than what I posted above ?. ---------------------- Now I am about to go out for a day of caching with a Nuvi 260W, Map60CSx, and my Fusic cellphone with Geocaching Navigator.
  19. Super cool Charger with a built in Lithium battery of at least 1600mah, and the manufacturer even sells replaceable Lithium batteries for this charger. At REI for $99.99
  20. My new Nuvi is the 260W, and my other GPS is the Map60CSx, for a backup, Tracklogging, and on the trails. Since no tracklogging on the Nuvi, I use the Map60CSx to record a tracklog.
  21. Adding tracklogging, is a big need. I don't know why tracklogging is not allowed on the Nuvi's. I wished that it was a feature that could be turned on, even if it came out of the box, turned off. There needs to be a way to backtrack if your a little bit lost.
  22. I have not found a cache with the Nuvi 260W yet, but I been playing with this GSAK Macro, and it is so cool. I pasted together several screen shot for that tall picture. Now with my Nuvi 260W, Map60CSx, and the Geocache Navigator on the cellphone, I cannot go wrong. At least the phone is in the pocket, and the 60CSx is left running in it's pouch, for the tracklogging bit. So it is still just one device in the hand type of caching. -------------------------------------------- The little signal bars at the top left corner: The trick to this, is that I must use my little pinky finger on my right hand, and press on the extreme upper left corner, for a couple seconds, and with unclipped fingernails, it is a little bit more challenging.
  23. Works perfect on my 260W, and I just have Large and regular Traditionals, and no other caches, and this setup worked the first time. Thanks for the GSAK Macro
  24. Just purchased the 260W from the Radio Shaq a few minutes ago, much lower prices than the not so bestbuy. Will be interesting to follow along with this paperless geocaching stuff. Purchased at 12:06pm just 22 minutes ago
  25. Two things here, if Garmin made the antenna the proper shape and size, and put in the SiRF chipset, I would get the Colorado again. After 3 failed Colorados, I threw in the towel. The signal quality of my 3rd Colorado (400t), was so bad, that I decided I am going to wait till they fix the hardware and software issues.
