  1. I know the young lady who placed this cache and I am familiar with the area. I'm going to call the Rangers today and find out what their policy is on caches in this lcation. I'll get back to ya. The blanket statement about kinves is silly, I can understand it in some caches, but I doubt that the knife placed here is going to see much activity by childeren. I think comman sense should decide. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  2. OK, it seems he's legit...I'm going after the cache next week. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  3. Chris & Cindy.... So we're not suppose to leave knives in caches now????? From his bio page.. "One of the biggest problems we approvers see is people putting knives in caches. Please, please do not put any type of knife in a geocache. Not even a small pocketknife. Many people cache with their children, and sometimes the children are the first to find and open the cache. We don't want these kids getting hurt now, do we?" Sounds odd to me...... ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  4. I was going for this cache , when I read this gentleman's post...I went to his bio and found he has a total of 9 finds while claiming his occupation to be a "cache approver". Among other things, he doesnt want us to leave knives in caches. His Biography: I volunteer my time to review and approve new geocaches, and to help geocachers in setting up their caches. If you have questions about caching in California, please write to me! Is he legit? or a self made cache cop???? ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  5. There are at least 360 different ways to approach a cache, if you ALWAYS follow the little arrow, you can turn a level 1 into a level 5. I know one level 1 cache that folks constantly say they cant get to because of high water in a creek, why they don't take the road behind it baffles me. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  6. To get back to the original post.... Congratulations! Your enthusiasm is always welcome. You have a long way to go to actually proclaim yourself obnoxious , but we'll give you time ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  7. In places that see a lot of traffic, burying your TP is not such a good thing, even the biodegradable stuff takes a year at least to degrade...that is if the animals don't spread it around first, which is what they usually do. There was another thread that dealt with issues like this. It got a little heated, and was kinda funny, all at the same time. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  8. I own a Magellan Tracker and a new Meridian Platinum. For the price, the Platinum was a steal...... ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  9. One running rant my partner has with his Mapsource topo program, is some of the areas are so darkened he cant read them, especially areas near National Parks. My MapSend program doesn't do that, but some areas are off quite a bit in terms of the topo lines showing whats really there....but then I have found that to be true with some USGS maps too. No program is perfect...I haven't found the inaccuracy's in Mapsend to be a limitation in the field....but more accuracy would be nice, in both programs. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  10. Congratulations.....you now get to learn the secret handshake! The one thing I would add to all the great advice your getting is.. There are at least 360 different ways to approach a waypoint (cache)..You don't always have to follow the arrow on your GPS. There is a cache near my house, that during heavy rains, folks keep posting that they got close, but couldn't reach it due to the high water...there is a road 5' behind the cache, but almost no one walks in on the road, they follow that darn arrow. Ok, I'm going to add my 2 cents to those that mention letting your Plat average when you get close...when I get within 0 to 10 feet, I put my Plat down, then while I go looking, let it average for a couple min.. then if I haven't found it, I can usually sight along the arrow (now it's ok folks) and it will usually point to it....well, most of the time....Ok, some of the time ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

  12. I upgraded to 4.02 and have no problems with it. As others have said, the accuracy seems to have a lot to do with where you are, in my area (Northern CA) it seems to be as accurate as I could ask for. I don't have a problem with being 10'/20' off once in awhile. It seems that when ever folks upgrade to a new firmware version, some will have problems with locking on or accuracy, no matter if they are going to 3.12, 4.02 or 4.06...I suspect that at least some of this comes from the differences that occur day to day with reception and other oddities with the satellites and then blaming it on the upgrade. Also the install must be done to the letter, including the clearing of memory at the end and setting it outside for 1/2 hour to build an almanac. I do recommend that you follow the advice given about doing the upgrade in expert mode, just to avoid any problems. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  13. If you go here, http://www.magellangps.com/en/support/products/meridianplatinum.asp You can download the CD manual as well as the supplemental manual. It will be in PDF format. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  14. I have a page folks can go to, so they can compare different map programs...the programs are, MapSend Topo, National Geographic Topo, MapTech Terrain Navigator and TOPO 3 by DeLorme. I used an area near Lassen Volcanic National Park, Northern CA, for most of the comparisons. http://community.webshots.com/album/65276909FJexxs NOTE....ONLY MapSend and Mapsource (Magellan and Garmins map programs) will download into your GPS! ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  15. I own two Magellan's, an old Tracker and a Meridian Platinum. I almost never use two hands to operate mine. My partner hates his side buttons, and don't get him started on his "joy" stick...lol My MapSend Topo program shows all areas around State and National Parks clearly, his Mapsource has many areas darkened to the point he can't read them Give me a big screen I can read from a distance over a tiny screen with somewhat higher resolution any day. The Garmin is smaller, thats why the screen is smaller too. Ok, ya got me...the Garmin is lighter, sooooo....DO SOME PUSH-UPS In the end though, all that counts is you use what ever brand you choose, and have fun.... ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  16. I went back to the old version too. 3.3 took longer to load and kept opening with a map of Kansas instead of what I wanted. I also had problems saving map changes. I contacted tech support and was told..."yea, it has more files so it takes longer to load, it shouldn't open to Kansas all the time" and "I never heard of the problem with not being able to save your files".....now thats what I call support. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  17. There seems to be an update for The "new" Mapsend Topo...the new version seems to be 4.20 instead of 3.0...an update seems to be available that updates Topo 4.20 to 4.20c. This update also seems to work with 3.0. The update doesn't seem to have any new map information or POI's, but does add new features to Topo 3.0 and changes it to 4.20c. Anyone know anything else about this?? Does the new 4.20 have new map data? Of course Magellan doesent have any information about it at all, their site makes no mention of the new 4.20 MapSend Topo. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  18. Try turning NMEA on, I'm not sure which one though.... you may have to try all three settings. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  19. I just got my $50.00 rebate. It took awhile, almost 3 1/2 months. I sent it in just before christmas. When I checked the rebate site, they said it would be mailed on March 18th. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  20. Do you have a map loaded to change? Perhaps you need two maps or more for the menu to show up? ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  21. Yesterday I took my nephew with me on his first cache hunt, I used my new Meridian Platinum and let him use my old Tracker...after swapping back and forth a few times I kept my Platinum... My new GPS seemed to be more accurate, especially if I get close, then wait 1 or 2 min, the needle always pointed right at it...the EPE seemed to be consistently smaller too and the screen is easier to read as well....and I can't imagine not having the electronic compass. Are you picking up the WAAS sat's...I think that WAAS slows things down while it makes the corrections, thats why if you wait a min or two it seems to work better. I have done some benchmarks and my new unit is definitely more accurate. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  22. I like to tell folks that there are at least 360 different ways to approach a cache. There is one cache down the street from me, that because of high water in a pond, several folks have not been able to get to it....there is a road directly behind it, but folks get caught up in "following the needle" and don't think to walk around to the road. I have one cache that folks were swimming across a creek and climbing up a rock wall to reach the cache before I included a tip..."walk across the creek down low, then walk up the other side" Like others have said, getting there is half the fun...check your maps! ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  23. Inside the folder where USAPhotoMap is, their should be a folder called "USAPhotoMapsData"...copy the contents from your old folder into the new folder of the same name. I think that should do it. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  24. I have the Plat and am very satisfied with it. I really like the compass feature, especially for Geocaching. Being able to walk slowly, even stop and still have a compass fix makes things easier. I still carry my Silva with me, but I use it allot less then when I had my old GPS. I don't really use the barometer...got one in my watch. The price I paid was less then most places ask for the Gold, that and the compass feature are why I went for the Plat. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  25. http://www.shopharmony.com/secure/products.asp?ItemID=MAGMRD59803 There are other good places to shop on the net as well, this is where I got mine...no complaints, great price! Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
