  1. I first heard about geocaching about 6 or 7 years ago when my brother told me a college friend of his was into this new game/sport/thingy. I always thought it sounded fun and wanted to give it a try, but it wasn't until early 2015 that I actually started myself. I've loved it and have been caching ever since.
  2. Not a whole lot irks me, but if I had to come up with a couple, they'd be: -LPCs that are in extremely high muggle areas. I'm not a fan of LPCs anyway, but I'll still grab them if I'm out for a day of caching. But there's one near my house that is in the parking lot of a fitness gym that has all glass outer walls. The entire time you're there getting the cache, just about everyone working out inside can see you the whole time, and it's pretty uncomfortable having them watching you constantly from inside the building. -WarNinjas mentioned this, and I guess it's one of my pet peeves, too. Caches that are on a busy country road with absolutely no parking around anywhere, but with a cache description that says "parking is available near ground zero". There are several of these near where I work. I've driven to them and had nowhere to park, then checked the overhead satellite view on Google maps just to make sure I wasn't missing something, and nope, no parking anywhere near, not even a shoulder drive off area big enough for a car.
  3. I find letterbox hybrids to be pretty fun. You will typically get a starting location. The clues tell you where to look and walk from that physical location that you start at, eventually leading you to a cache. You don't get there by ending at the coordinates, but by following the instructions starting at the coordinates.
  4. I actually find that my iPhone is generally more accurate in airplane mode. I almost always turn the data/cell off when I get to a cache after I have it downloaded to my phone.
  5. While it is fun to cache with others, there's no reason not to get started on your own. Use the website to locate caches, or if you have a smartphone, try out the basic app from geocaching.com to see how you like it. The basic app will let you do lower difficulty caches. Be sure to check out the "learn" link on the main website. It will give you a lot of great information and help you to understand good caching etiquette as you're learning.
  6. I know that feeling. Some cachers recently picked one of our caches to get engaged at! They were from out of state. He wanted it to be set up with a note so when they found it she would open the note on a long existing cache and wonder what was going on. As she was reading it he got down on one knee with a ring and proposed! It was really cool! She said YES and we are now friends on facebook so I can watch as they go on with life and get married. I was going to be the one to place the note and add flowers and harts and (for whatever reason rubber ducks...I guess there thing) But some one closer to the cache was nice and did that for us. The cache is in a busy place and I figured they might make a scene of themselves doing all that so I said they could take the cache for memories. We disabled it after they found it and made a replacement. Sometimes geocaching can be even more awesome then usual! That's really cool
  7. I tried again just now and it finally let me add the favorite point. Definitely hit or miss and definitely needs to be fixed.
  8. I've tried everything suggested (different browsers, adding a favorite to another cache then removing, etc.). I can't add a favorite to any geocaches no matter what I try or how much I keep trying. I'd really like to see this addressed since it seems to be happening to so many people.
  9. One of mine had a nice little find log a week or so ago saying that the finder and his wife decided to get a couple of caches for their 35th anniversary, and mine was one of the two that they found. Reading that made me smile and I congratulated them with a note in the logs.
  10. Like cerberus1 said, your finds are showing in your profile. The only thing I'll add is that I've occasionally had bad reception and had my logs not send, but if they don't send automatically, there's an option to resend them manually in the app from the pending logs section.
  11. There's one in our neighborhood that is called "I'm watching you" that we went to get a few weeks ago. The coords took us to a spot right between two different properties, and we couldn't figure out which house the cache was on. The description says to cache with confidence b/c it is the owners house, but since GZ is right between the two houses, we can't tell which property it's on, and we didn't want to go onto the wrong property and possibly upset someone if we got the wrong house. So, the creepy part; we were looking around when my wife noticed someone standing very still staring at us intently from the front door of one of the houses. I think it was probably the CO making the cache live up to it's name, but it really creeped my wife and kids out and made them think someone was upset that we were looking around their yard, so they took off before we found it. I figure I'll go back at some point without them.
  12. I agree, it sounds like the OP is logging into geocaching.com through the Safari browser on an iPhone, which is causing confusion. Do you have the basic free Geocaching.com app or the paid Geocaching.com app on the iPhone? Not a shortcut to the website that will use safari, but one of the actual apps?
  13. I actually did go back and add some duct tape over the magnets, for both of the reasons you mentioned (reducing magnet strength and holding the magnets on better). I checked on it this morning and that seems to be working well.
  14. I maintain one cache on a very large object... we had a problem of people removing the cache container and magnet but then hurriedly slapping it back in place without 'sticking' it... problem for me was that it either dropped off onto the ground or slid down... leaving no idea where it belonged. My current solution was to put a large ring magnet at the desired location, the cache has NO magnet, but does have a steel washer firmly attached to it. It sort of centers itself on the ring magnet without too much help. I adjusted the size of the washer to give a firm but not excessive resistance to moving, the magnet is large enough not to shift on it's own. This seems to keep it mostly in place or at least close by. The gropers still manage to drag it away from where it should be, but not anything like early on. You don't say how big your container is, but this might work for you with some thought... and it saves on finger bites as well since the magnet should stay in place... should that is... if some one moves it they are the bitees and probably deserve it for not reading the cache description and my occasional hints. Doug 7rxc Thanks for the tips.
  15. Who am I? My name is Ish On my hand I have a dish. I have this dish to help me wish. When I wish to make a wish I wave my hand with a big swish swish. Then I say, "I wish for fish!" And I get fish right on my dish. So... If you wish to make a wish, you may swish for fish with my Ish wish dish.
  16. They show up automatically for me when I click on "messages".
  17. Yes, I enjoyed reading the updated log, and the "adventure" of the second finder's log, too
  18. Ok, that makes me feel a little better since at first I thought the log sheet may already be missing.
  19. I just had a new cache published today. The FTF added "temp log" to his found log. I hadn't seen that before and my first thought was that somehow the log paper was already missing, but it was there when I placed the cache, which was just this morning. It then occurred to me that maybe it just meant the finder was putting that meaning that the log notes for the find on the cache page would later be updated with more details. Is that likely what was meant?
  20. I found a cache recently that had an old makeup brush that was covered in some kind of not-so-good looking slimy black stuff. Not sure what it was, but I didn't see it when I first opened the container. I ran straight for the hand sanitizer after that one.
  21. Just because you weren't actively looking doesn't mean it isn't a find. Would it make sense to drive back home, look it up, then drive back to "find" it, knowing exactly where it is, just to sign the log? It should be easy to find it online to log it if you record the coordinates.
  22. So, in almost a total 180 from my previous post in this thread, I recently found a similar cache in a busy place where it was the same situation you mentioned; there was a bench that, if you sat in the right place, you could easily get the cache without much trouble and without drawing attention. It was in a busy outdoor mall, but the CO did an excellent job of describing where to sit, almost to the point of being letter-box like (ie. stand so a particular sign is at 11 o'clock, and this particular store is at 1 o'clock, then turn around and look for a bench at 6:40 and sit there). The previous cache I mentioned earlier made me feel almost guilty, but this particular one at the outdoor mall was very fun and exciting, and made me feel like I was a good stealthy detective. So a lot of it, at least in my experience, has to do with how well the CO sets it up and makes it fun rather than luck in a crowded environment.
  23. I just had one of these last night. When I pulled up to it, there was a lot of street traffic within plain view of the hiding spot, as there almost always is in this area, even very late at night. There is also a business with huge windows from floor to ceiling right there, too. I was as stealthy as possible and got the cache out and sat in my car to sign the log. Someone came out of the building and got into a car next to me and I swear they were sitting there staring at me, but it was probably just my imagination. The guy sat in the car for 10 minutes while I waited for him to drive away so I could replace the cache. I finally decided to drive around the parking lot rather than to continue sitting there, and he left right after I drove away. I waited a few minutes and went back to replace the cache, but as soon as I got it put back, and large group came out of the nearby business. Even though the description had a "stealth" warning, it was the worst one I've seen as far as muggles/traffic, and it's the first time a cache has almost made me feel dirty like I was doing something wrong.
