  1. I have seen a really nice statement in most caches explaining what it is for the non-cacher that may stumble across one. Is this available on line where I can copy and past it from? Thanks,gr
  2. I just went through this with my HCx which Santa brought me. After countless e-mails and phone calls, try this, try that, they had me send it in. Garmin ended up replacing my unit. When they had me try to set it back to factory specs. ont he phone they didint warn me about taking the card out. Now that I have a new unit I can not reload my city map and it is starting to act up again (sigh)....
  3. Thanks for the info guys. I am running Vista so it looks like I may be limited to my choice. Switched to Vista for the new year and have been sorry every since. gr
  4. So how many of you are using PDA's and do you have a recommendation for a low budget one. I do not have one, have never used one, have no idea what I need and how they compare to one another. Any software required? Thanks....
  5. Thanks Guys. I do have the card slot in my unit. I just really never looked into doing tracks until now. Normally I just spot hit a cache here or there but this time I wanted to map a trail to my caches. I ended up drawing the track in Easy GPS then sending back to the unit so that I could import it into my Topo program but, my topo program is not able to create a route or profile off of the points alone. I ended up just digitizing over the points in my Topo program and creating a profile which will be very close to what I had. I will try and get set up for my next trekking adventure so that I hopefully will not have to jump through hoops to get what I am looking for. gr Do you have an microSD card in the VistaHCx? If you have the unit set to save the track info to the data card then it will be there even if you do a save of the active trace to the internal memory. You mount the unit in USB mode and look for the .gpx files that are named by date. All the info is in them.
  6. So I walked a trail yesterday and have my points. My question is, is there a way to create a route and profile on my PC with just my points? I did this with my Vista HCx and didnt save it before turning it off. Thanks...........
  7. Okay, I am very unsavy, what is the normal format you guys use for your coords? It just took me entirely too long to get my Easy GPS format to match Google Earths. Does Garmin convert coords. on the fly when you upload them from a different format than the unit is set for? I have an ETREX Vista. thanks, The Georookie
  8. xlnt, thanks John! As usual operator error :-)
  9. I am trying to load BMGPX to convert NGS County.DAT files. When I click on the .exe it brings up a DOS window which I can not drag my dat file into. Is this a Windows Vista issue or am I missing something? Thanks..
  10. So I have a Garmin GPS V and City Select v5 which I purchased together some time back. I upgraded my old Etrex to a Vista HCx so that I could have map capabilities. I have gone round and round with Garmin trying to figure out why I can not unlock the software so that I can use it with my new unit. I did upgrade to Windows Vista on my PC and I am not sure if that threw a monkey wrench in the problem or not. They had me load the version of Map Source which is supposed to make it work with Windows Vista. I go through the unlock manager and get the coupon number but it says it is not right. Garmin recomendation was to purchase a new version of city select so that I can get a coupon with the 25 digit number. I do not understand exactly what I am trying to unlock, the unit or the software and why wont it work now. Have any of you run into this problem and if so did you find a work around? I am somewhat frustrated with this and dont see why I should have to purchase another expensive City Select CD. Thanks...
  11. We use the DeLorme product at work for creating flightlines etc.. I was also told the software also has the ability to digitize and create profiles, I have been using my NG Topo for that. I checked out their GPS unit and see that you can load the images on there which seams very attractive. I was all geared up to get a Garmin 60SCx until I saw this. My question is, are they as good at picking satellites up in wooded areas as the Garmin 60 or the Etrex HCx? Thanks, Denny
