  1. It just starting working for her at some stage. Not sure if she had done any further Windows updates or not. I suspect that might be the case though. Knowing her, it probably started working after restarting the computer, sometime after doing an update. However, she's since damaged her Magellen and has bought a Garmin now and no longer needs VP. Hope you figure this out geoff511
  2. Might have it sorted - will update if this fails...
  3. I can't believe I'm asking for help on a Megallen.. lol. I'm helping someone who just bought a new PC try to get VantagePoint running on it, and have a question. Is there anyone here with Windows 8.1 who managed to get this to work with the GC Api, ie, authorizing, downloading PQ, etc. It keeps giving error saying it cannot connect to GC server. I've temporarily disabled the firewall just to make sure it's not blocking it and it didn't make a difference. Or any other idea's I can try, before insisting she use GSAK. Thanks... Brian
  4. Garmin has a product called Birdseye which allows you to transfer actual satellite maps to certain Garmin units. It is about $30 a year though but it is quite handy. If you decide to buy it, make certain that it works for your GPS. Download basecamp if you haven't already. Connect your unit to your computer. They used to let you download a really small amount of data to make sure you can get it working before you buy it. Hope this helps.
  5. Just wondering if you have any update for those of us who've purchased a set yet with the number we've been allocated? Just curious and looking forward to the day they're ready BTW, thanks for all your hard work on this...
  6. Just found this thread, but ordered mine the day the email went out. I really wish they were trackable too. The TB idea isn't a bad one
  7. At least as far as I'm concerned, things are going to be OK. I think my questions are answered... As long as reviewers have some common sense discretion (which isn't a bad thing people) and don't ban a cache simply because it has part of a business name in its title. Could you imaging if we couldn't use the word apple in a cache - there are plently on non-Apple computer apple related caches out there that should be allowed, Yum Apple Pie, An apple a day, the big apple...etc.etc... As long as apple isn't used in anyway to promote a business called Apple anything, then its likely going to be passed even with the word apple in it.. This was my concern, and like I said I think this was addressed... At least there is the claims@geocaching.com email if you feel a reviewer is being vindictive or extra picky towards you.... if a cache is blocked but still meets the criteria - email them... Any for those you might be still be arguring/discussing the Timmies FTF issue - wouldn't you rather be outside caching instead of inside arguring/discussing??? Winter will be here before you know it! (Not that winter is necessarily a bad thing though...)
  8. This has been covered as well. If you are talking about a farm called "Old McDonald's Farm" then you are advertising. If you are using it in regards to a pop culture reference then it may be allowed, but it is reviewed on a case by case basis. Good call But I actually meant for Mcdonalds Farm that has been closed for 50 years - hence Old Macdonald's Farm. Should have clarified - my bad.... Perhaps a better exampe is the other title I asked Cache Drone about - Columbia Falls. This is a waterfall in Montana as well containing the name of the clothing store. Pretty sure something like Columbia Falls is acceptable (depending on context) where Columbia Sportswear Falls would not.... While I agree with you, it would be nice to know for sure from Cache Drone or Groundspeak... despite the crystal clear guideline, there is a grey area - its called discretion - there has be for examples like I've mentioned. I guess I just want to know wether reviewers take the context of the name into review or not.... unless I've missed it, I haven't seem them make this clear or not.

  10. 100% Crystal clear - I wish they were. When I first posted in this forum I asked if a cache named "Öld Macdonalds Farm" would be OK among others. If you can give a concrete answer if this would be OK or not then the rules are crystal clear. If you can't say for certain, then the crystal clear rule isn't that clear. I don't think anyone here questions we need a rule to prevent free advertising, but to most of us, this crystal clear rule is kind of murky... answer the question above honestly (like you were reviewing a real cache) and end this discussion once and for all... :-)
  11. You can first try to discuss it with the reviewer in question. If that does not yield a result that you were hoping for, you can then email appeals@geocaching.com with the GC CODE of the listing. Sandy, who posted earlier, is in charge of that team. CD edit to add: Not sure why you are concerned about that. You have 9 listings, of which only 1 is active. This issue does not seem to have affected any of your listings. But maybe I'm not seeing what you are referring to. Not concerned per se, but I thought this was a discussion forum and if you have a question/concern regarding the topic this is the place to ask... while my question doesn't affect me currently, it probably affects a number of other peoples caches. BTW; thanks of behalf of everyone for the claims email... its good to know there is one if needed...
  12. I started reading this discussion thinking it makes sense not to have business names in titles, descriptions etc but I do have the following questions. Where is the line drawn? For example here are some cache names I've either found or have thought of hiding... Is there a problem with these? Old McDonalds Farm... Columbia Falls... (Waterfall in Montana, also contains name of the sportswear company) Anything with New Brunswick in it (We sell Brunswick Pool Tables at work) What abount city names who are also company names? Pontaic, Dodge, etc??? I hope caches named like this are not being disabled by a reviewer who following the guideline to the letter and not the intent of the guideline aor cache name... What options as cache owners do we have for appeal if an over zealous reviewer disables a cache because that feel a company name in involved?
  13. First off, thanks for this awesome macro! I used it yesterday for my first paperless roadtrip and it worked great. I got stuck in roadworks along the route I had planned to take, but having my entire database of caches loaded meant that even on the detour I took around the 10 miles of roadworks (I love my Nuvi for that feature alone!) I was able to find a number of caches along the detour too. With papered cache, it would have just been a nice drive. I get my replacment handheld GPSr in a couple days, so I hope the GPX file is works with that too. As good as the Nuvi is, its nice using a handheld one for caching. Thanks again... Brian
  14. Hi The_Chris.. Do you know if there is a limit to the number of caches you can add this way at a time? When I do it to my Navi it gets me to over write the file.. so I`m assuming the Nuvi is limited to just one at a time. It would be nice if the geocache ones let you add multiple caches using the send to gps option...
  15. Thanks everyone for the great replies... it does sound like something that might be a useful feature.. espcially as units with it do not cost a whole lot more. It sounds like the sort of feature that I would like.
  16. Hi there... I'm sure this is a real newbie question.. but here goes... I am considering purchasing a Garmin eTrex Venture HC or similar unit and am wondering if anyone can explain the Geocache mode is simple english what it does. I was unable to find any info on the Garmin website. Should it be a feature that would be beneficial or is it just a marketing ploy.. Cheers.. Brian
