  1. Geocaching made the front page of Yahoo. Too bad it was in a bad way. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=...ing_prosecution
  2. I have been out of the geocaching scene for a while. I guess you can say I am an old timer. I had a few kids so I had to put the GPS away. Here is my first question. When did Jeremy or whoever runs Groundspeak now start charging (Premium Membership) to see maps of near by caches? I am surprise you allow download waypoints with this mindset. Why not charge for that feature? I think this is a bad idea for the sport. For people who are new, it was nice to see where the caches were in the area. Please do not get me wrong, I want people to pay up for the service. Someone has to pay for the bandwidth, but I do not think this feature should be a premium service item. I saw this feature as a great selling point for the sport. Jeremy or whoever runs this now, you may want to think about giving a 5 day trial Premium Membership to new geocachers to show off the service or put it back the way it was. Or maybe you show the caches but do not people to link (identify) to the particular cache page if click for the free version. I agree that the free version should not allow the map to pan as well. So here is my second question. Has the membership growth slow down since this change? I would search on this question to see if has been asked before but I see the forum search is not working. Is that an upgrade as well? LOLOL Paul Ag
  3. Can you increase the timing of when tracklog captures its points for tracks? Using oziexplorer I noticed it snaps every 30 seconds. That is not good enough. I am trying to show the 3D route of a rollercoaster. It does a loop going 60 miles an hour and because of it longer recording intervals it is missing it path. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag

I am strange like that and I also have done a pirate cache before However, I am too lazy to give anything back. I would toss everything away. The guy is creative you have to give him credit for that. I can see myself becoming a trash cache bandit and getting rid of stupid crappy caches that should be archived. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  5. Feature wise. It is pricey, but for my purpose it will work. It will only pull in half the track log. I figure I will extend it to get the part I want to see. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  6. Does anyone know if you can record the 3D route as a avi file in the 3D tracer program? Or is there a 3rd party software available that can capture your computer screen to save the images as an avi file? I figure gamers must do this alot. 3D tracer allows you to play your track log in 3D so for example if you are in a plane you can see the plane rise and fall. See http://www.stransim.com/tracer.htm for details on the program. It is pretty cool. I only have the free version. I plan to ride on a rollercoaster and log the ride. Then I want to post the log on the internet for people to view. I am bored. Does 3D tracer record the route in an avi format? Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag

  10. quote:Originally posted by Anders.:The heading is actually stored in the active track log too, so assuming you don't hold the GPS in any other direction than you are travelling in, the data is there. Anders So what programs allow you to view that data? Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  11. I will take your word it is not in the log. Can I hook the GPS to a palm or something to get the direction over time or maybe at a waypoint capture moment? I know that scripting cameras can capture the information someone mentioned it in a post. I know there is a bored programmer out there that can figure it out. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  12. quote:Originally posted by SpongeRob:Not sure how easy that would be to do. You would have to "Merge" the GPS data into the video stream going to your video tape DAC (Providing it's a digital camcorder). I'm not aware of any consumer video cameras that can take multiple video streams and merge them into a single stream. It can't be that hard. Of course I know nothing about programming. It has to be digital camcorder for the timestamp. When you download the camcorder file to the computer, is a timestamp on the file type (avi, whatever)? I figured a oziphoto type of software can link the two together so any camcorder should work. I think I saw someone selling a program like this for $200 + that can handle images, notes, and avi files, I think. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  13. quote:Originally posted by Atchafalaya:That's really cool; What I'm trying to do is just post the waypoints as a file you can download. I've already got vector-based maps, topo maps and links to photo maps on the site. Check it out: it's http://bayoutrails.org/trails/ James Proctor Atchafalaya Paddle Trails I think OziExplorer is what you need. It allows you to import maps into its program. I never could figure it out (I do not have the maps) so I never tried. Quakemap has the maps. Did you get your maps for free somewhere? I have not brought mapsource yet I do not want to fork over $50. I need to find a friend to burn me a copy. flare flare flare I do have Mappoint. I wonder if oziexplorer can import mappoint maps. Anyone know? Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  14. I want to know at a certain time what direction my gps was pointing. I have the photos with the coodinates/time on it but do not know where direction the picture was shoot. What other type of data is available from the route file? Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag
  15. Out of curiousity, since I got the digital camera set up to put the coordinates on the image, can the same thing be done to a digital video camera? Does a digital video camera store the capture time like the normal carmera does? Is there software out there like oziphoto to hook the two together? Or are there scripting video cameras out there? That would be cool to run a avi file and while it runs, a route on a map is created of where the image was taken. I know companies (3M) are doing this but has it filter down to the little guys. 17. Daughter and I went out in the marsh. Of course, I hide a cache out in the middle of the bay, someone had too. Also, I learned how to put coordinates on digital images, learn quakemap, and learned how to do mapimage with html. See final product at http://www.geocacherssociety.com/map.htm . I was bored. I like how all my hobbies are related to each other. Now, if they could only make me money. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag

Ok quakemap man. I love your product. I used the oziphoto to put the coordinates on the images and put the points on the map with the html link, but how do I save this to the internet for all to see. Do I have to print screen it and do html to do it or does your product do it somehow? Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag

  21. All nongeocaching items, I learned through geocaching. 1. Sunday, I am going out to map canoe routes and put them into quakemap. 2. I will take digital photos of the area and put the coordinates on the images. (I bought the camera for that sole reason). 3. Tommorrow night, I am going to look for iridum flares with my kids. 4. I am learning how to create a website to track person signiture items. 5. I sent a letter to the city of Houston to take down abandon billboards. 6. I just signed up to be a reporter for trial hiking site. 7. I made a shirt to sell on cafepress. You guys are making into a techo/outdoor/activist freak. Good Luck Cache Baggers - Paul Ag

  24. quote:Originally posted by Cheesehead Dave:If you've entered your home coordinates, then the table of upcoming flares will show two orders of magnitude for the brightness: The magnitude where you are, and the magnitude for the nearest optimal viewing point. The table will say something like "3.8 miles W" That means if you go to that point, you'll be under the path of the brightest view.
