  1. oh.. sorry !!!!! just joking its having fun that counts and keep posting ....... its good to have someone new on the forum
  2. you`ve made more posts than cache finds get out there and find more caches
  3. Glad to see you found your way to the UK section have fun
  4. EtrexH is a good starter without putting you into the realms of a second mortgage , "H" is important because you can maintain signal lock on the GPS satellites even under trees However the PC link is serial (cable not included) so you might want to look at the next model up to get a USB link which makes connection to PC easier for noobs and enables you to dload co-ords to GPS straight from GC.com cache page . I`m UK as well so if you need any other advice you can contact me through profile here or go to UK section on forums where local-to-you people are always ready to help have fun
  5. Etrex H is a good start and gets you into uncomplicated caching; even if you upgrade at a later date the Etrex then becomes a good starter for the younger members of the family when/if they decide to go it alone
  6. Dont depend solely on your GPS compass , carry a proper compass with you, they`re cheap and no weight, dont run batteries down and (short of destruction)will work 24/7
  7. As long as you are logged on to GC.com and you have the garmin software installed ,clicking "send to GPS" will send relevant co-ords to your Venture without any other software installed . Premium membership will enable you to d/load a bunch of co-ords in one go ( GPX files ) Thats your basic setup; go for it Go to UK section in forums here (scroll down to countries UK at bottom) where you can PM people local to MK who can help if you need it
  8. Well I cant get my stats cos I`m linked to HazelS and I cant change it cos theres no names in A-H weird or what ?
  9. Was it 84 the last one ? but i missed that one as well ; was driving back home from work (which is probaly why) family were talking about it when i got home ; me saying `what earthquake ,what tremor ?` This time I woke about 2:30 which obviously was after the event ...unless it was a delayed reaction Probaly miss the next one as well
  10. cynical cynical they might win something ClareLouise : you only got half a head
  11. I`m with KandG on this publish and if theres an objection all they have to do is email thru GC.com and have them removed . but they`ll basically be non-identified pics on a specialist website , mostly head & shoulders I would guess so not a prob as far as I can see
  12. Good news in part then Thanks for the update Ian
  13. I think its a very sensible solution and leaves the open to subdivide at a later date if need be SO subdivide Wirral from Northwest now and the Wirralites will quite happy
  14. Theres always a test , this one is to see how long before it gets closed
  15. Well, apparently it would help you, anyway. For somebody who is on holiday it's easy to see which département you are in - just look at the car number plates (but this will be changing soon). The régions were invented quite recently, and while some of them (Bretagne, Alsace) are very "natural", others are quite controversial. Normandy is split into two and the région called "Centre" has no identity apart from being in the middle of all the others. But I think 21 is a better number than 94 for dividing mainland France (the "Hexagone", as it's called). So Brittany, Dordogne , Loire-Atlantique etc are "departments" ?? I thought they were regions
  16. Best of luck mate , just what you don`t need question ? is trigpointing clear of their influence ?
  17. Garmin customer service is better than Sony ; they did everything but replace the item including getting it "butchered"( sorry I mean "repaired " ) in the words of a reputable repairman, and that was only 6 months old. So if Garmin replace because of a fault then its fine by me ;that shows customer service question really is : what is the percentage of fauty units compared to those sold/replaced ? its a question of scale. and replacement IS an acceptable action for them to take ; so for those nitpickers your question has to be: what do actually expect them to do ? I would take Garmin`s attitude over and above Sony`s (my personal experience)any day.
  18. Lurk all you want thats how you pick up tips and hints by the way hows the battery life on these phones when you use it for caching , I would be interested as I`m sure would others, in the experience you have when using the caching mode . (there are Yellow EtrexH on sale now for about £80 I believe , if you find you need a cheap separate GPS )
  19. Sign and date it ; weather if its memorable(like its humping it down ,in the dark [thank god for led torches], and the ammo box is almost in a ditch) swaps or not Calling cards are probaly better if they are laminated; they tend to last longer easy to do on computer and A3 laminate pockets give plenty in 1 go and when I do place my first cache I hope that folks do leave calling cards (it `s personalises the experience )
  20. I think we would be more likely to use "régions", of which there are 21 on the mainland, plus Corsica and four others a long way away. There are 100 départements, which is too many. Also, more French people can probably point to a given région on a map than to a given départment. If we need to split up the review territory tomorrow then a line across the country at N47º splits it into two parts with about the same number of caches in each. (I calculated the "centroid" of the French caches the other day and it is quite close to the geographical centre of the country.) Not only that but speaking personally I am more aware of regions in France as opposed to departements so that sort of division would help international cachers as well. yes ?
  21. Why not use the roughly regional divisions as per eckingtons list , because everyone knows what is meant by for example Southwest or Midlands or North Wales After all its just a general guide not definitive and although the boundaries blur, is that a bad thing ? If anyone feels really strongly they can make that point when they list a new cache or if you`re looking just try the region next door OR Could use the BBC television regions personally I think regions would be ideal because as Deceangi says it is a pain for us in N/Wales -Wirral because theres a blinking river between us when use tap in your home postcode for a search Perhaps subdivisions could be worked in at a later date to account for oddities like eg Wirral where we have 2 rivers either side or London ( north & south ? ) Regions get the " foot in the door " so to speak
  22. give it 12 months to work the bugs then maybe it`ll be worth it
  23. lets follow the KISS principle ( keep it simple sweetheart/stupid )
  24. That is the most sensible suggestion thats been put forward well done Eckington !! It`s a short list and everyone knows where they are if you use those designations
