  1. How about adding the rating system to the same page that you log your find on? That way you have to log the cache as either found or not found or whatever to submit rating information. It could be something as simple as a few drop down boxes and not mandatory but optional. The ratings could be sumerized at the top of the cache page and on the individual log entries you could see who rated the cache and how they rated it and who didn't. just my thoughts
  2. I have the same problem with one of my caches of this type. I found one a few weeks back of the same type that had a good idea. They gave up and designed it to be pulled up. they put a piece of PVC pipe in the ground just bigger than the sprinkler head. the container then slides into the pipe and looks to be in the ground but it can be pulled up and replaced without messing anything up. I have been meaning to retrofit mine just haven't had time yet.
  3. I have something that I haven't seen before but seemed like a good idea to me. I had a batch of golf pencils made. they print 3 lines. one has my name on it the second has the website address and the third says thanks for the cache. got 700+ of them for around $50
  4. I know there is one in just west of ashboro NC at blue stone quarry. it is a inland dive site. a lot of the scuba instructors make their students find it but it is only in about 10 feet of water. I have considered placing one in or near the cape fear river near wilmington nc but am still working on how to do it. good luck
  5. Ok maybe i phrased this a little wrong. i'm sure there are one or two others out there who have gone off on a secret cache hunt and maybe told someone they wer going to run to the store really quick or something like that. that is the kind of thing I was looking for not meaning that people leave their famlies for months on end with no word and do a cross country trip or anything like that.
  6. I have a aollapseable stick that works really wel for me and was only about $20 but more often than not i use two old ski poles. I keep them in the bed of my truck and after I jump out I grab them and off I go. Since they are scratched up and ugly I don't have to worry about anyone stealing them either. I picked up the pair for $5 at a used sporting goods store years ago for skiing and have since gotten new ski poles and these are now the geo poles.
  7. go to the trackable items section of the site and log your find. Each bug and coin has it's own web page. you can write a little note about where you found it and the things it got to do with you. you will need to type in the number that is on either the coin or travel bug to get to it's page. once you have logged that you have picked it up you need to find another cache to drop it off into. After you have dropped it off you get back on and log where you put it. you log travel bugs and coins both the same way the difference is that with most coins you get a unique symbol on your profile for it but the travel bugs all get put under one category. Good luck
  8. A addiction to something is usually marked by the addict doing things to hide their activities from others. I know quite a few cachers that are self proclaimed addicts so I would like to know what they do to hide it from "normal people" lol Ok i'll start this one off. I work 24 hour shifts so I usually take a way home that will involve passing a cache or two. On days i'm off work and I get to go out to the woods and go looking i'll stop by the car wash on the way home and clean the mud off the truck so that when my better half gets home she is none the wiser.
  9. 1. Think long and hard about a few things. first where you are going to hide it. is it a place that you would like to go? Is it going to be safe from muggles? second what are you going to hide? the container is as important as where you put it. it must fit the area and keep the log safe 2. use a GPS that can average waypoints to mark the location. Allow it to average 200+ times to make sure you have a good location. If you don't have one i'm sure another local geocacher will and they will help you mark the point. 3. After all is said and done put the point into your GPS and see if it leads you to the right area and how close it takes you. This will tell you if any changes need to be made. Have fun with placing the cache and make sure it is the type that you would really enjoy looking for. I have placed 2 caches that I absolutely love. the first is GC19CZF and has only been found 6 times in 5 months and the second is GC1BQGA which has been found 10 times but read the logs and you will see the fun people have had finding it. I spent 2 months on the second of the two caches picking the right container (one that to this day no one else has ever even thought about let alone seen before) and finding the location to put it. It is a simple park and grab but I know of a few people that have gone 6 times before they found it with the third hint I gave them. Good luck
  10. PS don't buy at radio shack. Look around online. you can get a much better unit for the same price or the same unit for less $. I got both of mine on ebay.
  11. If you can afford it I would say get either the Garmin 60 CSX or the Garmin Colorado. I have both and you can't beat them for geocaching. The Colorado still needs a few things tweeked in the software but it mor than makes up for it by letting you view the entire cache page with the logs and hints. just my 2 cents
  12. nearest owned 0.1 nearest found is 0.7 nearest DNF is 1.9 then 3.4 and I have to get to page 3 of the nearest caches to see that one. lots in my area.
  13. I have something I do that I think is kind of neat. I take old precription bottles that I have cleaned out and removed the labels off of ( you can go to most small pharmacies and get new ones for a nickle or so). On the outside I tape the CITO icon and it says " Street Doc clean up kit" inside I put a shopping bag and a latex free glove. this way the person getting the container gets the glove and bag to do some cleanup and they also get a cache container in the form of a pill bottle. I don't put them in all caches I find but where I see lots of trash around I will leave one or two. Just my two cents worth.
  14. I had sort of the same thing happen to me. I loaded all the local GC into my gps and would log them as I found them. The problem is that one of them I found isn't on the website anymore. I have been out there a few times and it is still there to this day. It is named the peanut cache and is next to logans road house in fayetteville. I can't find it on the site anywhere and I know it was there at one time because it was loaded into my gps. any thoughts on how I could find it on the site so I can log it?
  15. Can't wait. looks to be a fantastic event with all proceedes going to the Fisher House. There isn't many better causes than supporting wounded soulders. Thanks for putting this on and I can't wait.
  16. I live just south in Fayetteville and we have quite a few people that go out of their way to hide great caches in the area. Your right though the majority are just light poles and bushes all over town. I would love to see some sort of recognition on a yearly schedule that recognised cachers that went out of their way to hide great caches. Maybe even a award that could be denoted with a icon that they could have on their page. What do you think?
