Actually I adjusted one of mine recently after a run in with a cache, it was on top of a torn down train bridge, the tracks were up a very steep hill, very tough climb especially now in the winter time, muddy, rocky, wet ivy. I probably would have gotten stuck up there if not for my husband, I am terrified of heights(yet I love to go rock climbing figure that one out). We thought that we have encountered at least a 4 terrain but we got home to find that it was only a 2.5. I lowered the terrain on one of my caches after that one, also recommended to up their terrain rating when I wrote my log for that cache.

What more is there to geocaching than FTF's... travelbugs are always missing, and caches get lamer and lamer, at least there is the competition factor in a FTF... if its not FTF's its a numbers game... and ppl think the more the better... either way FTF's are fun, and at least friendly competition You know, you could always hide some great caches yourself as an inspiration to others. I've found quite a few hides that I know I want to duplicate because they are awesome. Or, you could keep whining. Your choice. Edit: Just so you know this was actually written by Cpl. Klinger, not my Col. Flagg. Not that I disagree with him, but he forgot to log me out.

The Bomb Squad strikes again
Col. Flagg replied to TeamPatchwork's topic in General geocaching topics
I remember my parents telling me once while they were on a cruse they had sat down and a couple chairs down someone left what looked like a camera case, when one of the deck crew came by mom told them about it so they could locate the owners and the guy called in a whole bunch of other people, they treated it like it was a bomb. Mom never figured out what happened because they asked them to leave the area, but the ship never blew up so I guess it was ok. -
TB Hospital/Hotel - ? Your thoughts ?
Col. Flagg replied to carolnbarney's topic in General geocaching topics
I love TB hotels, I own one myself and haven't had trouble with thieves, yet, although I had one ammo box disappear in a flood, since it was located next to a river, but some chain fixed that problem. I make it a point to visit TB hotels, but I usually end up visiting right after someone wipes it out(that's what I wanted to do ) -
I am also not new to internet forums (a Usenet user since 1984) and see a parallel with what someone describe as the "forum mob" and a common practice on usenet forums had was generall considered bad form. In the context of Usenet "a bunch of individuals expressing a common opinion to a post becomes what is known as a "pile-on" or a series of "me too" posts. This forum, as is the case with usenet groups supports the notion of threads. Whether there are followups to the OP, or to a specific post in the thread, after the third or fourth response which essentially expresses the same opinion, it becomes, basically a "pile-on". I've seen a lot of threads here where there was an adequate response or two after a couple of responses, but the thread went on and in with numerous followups essentially saying the same thing. Someone new to the forums will probably get the point after a couple of responses (granted, some never do) if they've posted something that many geocachers may find objectionable. After 5-6 responses, from different people essentially saying the same thing, someone new to the forums without the requisite thick skin is going to get turned off by the geocaching community (that participates in these forums) pretty fast. On useset, there is a recommended practice that one should read all response to a thread before responding. If someone else has essentially already written a similar response, don't respond unless there is something useful to add to the discussion. The same should apply to the OP. He kept going on about the same thing and getting quite upset that no one else agreed with him. Obviously after all those opposing post the OP still didn't get it. I really don't see a problem with people joining in and saying I agree/I disagree, it gives people a sense of what the forum community as a whole thinks, since we don't have polls in the forum.

Alright, what did you get for Christmas?
Col. Flagg replied to JJTally's topic in General geocaching topics
My husband, Cpl. Klinger hid a decon container in our christmas tree with an itunes gift card in it. -
If someone did go down, and find it missing, I guarantee I know what would replace it... ... a throw down film canister.

First you need to visit it and confirm it's condition. Have you tried contacting the owner. If your that concerned about it you could trying adopting it, but it would require the owners permission, but you should find the cache first, he could have actually fixed it. Edit:spelling.

I cache a lot by myself. I just make sure that my husband(or someone else) knows where I am going and when I expect to be back, better yet I usually carry a cell phone with me( it has come in handy I had a creepy person following me once and I flipped my phone out and called my husband, once I did that he turned and went another way, coincidence?) If you are smart about it going alone can be just fine. It's just like caching in the city, there are certain places that I wouldn't want to go alone as a women. I also carry a can of mace with me, of course I bought it more for caching in the country because people let there dogs run here and there. If you are still uncomfortable go to a local event or local forums and ask around if anyone wants to be a caching buddy.

My goal for this year was to hit 500 by the end of the year. I just got number 700 this past weekend.

Are we allowing the degradation of this forum?

I wish. Then I would have a (better) reason to post. Edit: fixed. If we were still going with the cow puns don't you mean a "butter" reason. -

There are a ton over here in Indiana, the Challenge of the Century Caches, there is a new one out that you have to have cached every day of the year(not in the same year) including the leap year. Every state has the DeLorme Challenge, a county challenge and so on, its just a question of finding them. Yes challenge caches are technically ARL's, we have discussed this in the forum before. Sorry I can't find the thread or I would post a link. Most get around this by making them mystery caches.

No, that would be like if an event was held at an ice cream shop you could justify getting a smiley just for going to the ice cream shop any time. An event is a gathering of geocachers at a specific time and date. CITO events are still events and must conform with event guidelines, which says that after the event it must be achieved within 4 weeks. Of course I can't find anywhere(maybe someone else can) where it says how long an event can be, it is implied that it is only one day since it says that multiple day events can be split up.

Are you implying that the forums are at the lowest point already? -
I don't have one, I'm just being silly, it seems to be the theme today on the forum. If I didn't say something someone else would and probably not to be silly.
-
They could list it as a mystery.

yes, it does. i do not believe this is the first time you've made an effort to blast me on this, and it's certainly not the first time i've been given the opportunity to explain: beside my innate difficulties with right/left coordination, i have a good deal of hand pain from old injuries, as well as a severe tremor that's a permanent side effect of a long-discontinued medication. every sentence that i type i do so with great effort and discomfort without having to worry about the shift key, so i rely instead on my versatile and masterful command of the language and my impeccable use of punctuation to get my meaning across. is there any reason you keep tossing this question of the shift key as a non-sequitur into other discussions where it serves no purpose other than to attempt diminishment of my thoughts? attitude boy, attitude boy, wants to be cool, but can only annoy... Haha, you used the shift key, you need it for :

I have TB on my car as well. I will "dip" my car into an event. Some people do it to keep track of event mileage, like myself. It's fun to sees who discovers my car at events. If you want more info go to the TB forums there is a similar thread started in there right now.

Can we get something straight, as this thread keeps heading down the tracks toward oblivion? Groundspeak never publicly called SuperFly a liar. SuperFly created that illusion when he posted the correspondence from Groundspeak, which incidentally, never used the word liar. It simply stated they believed there was never a cache placed in the location listed. You are perpetuating that illusion for whatever reasons or devices you so choose. Furthermore, we only have access to what SuperFly "says" he has. Who knows if the text of the documents he says he has are accurate? Only Groundspeak does, and we have no right to demand to see their information. The most troubling thing about this thread, is that all of you would rather be in here whining and moaning about a cache nowhere near you that had a non-precedent setting action taken against it. For 11 pages. Why don't you all get up, grab your GPS, and go get some caches? Or are you all having too much fun playing Chicken Little? /"The sky is falling the sky is falling!"
