  1. It'll take me a little while to update Kit. I have to do my tests by having a cartridge out in the wild and watch it for a little while to make sure there aren't any problems. While that's going on, I can start modifying Kit. I had hoped to keep Kit 100% compatible with the other builder applications. However, I can do some really neat stuff if I go away from that.

These next two months are very demanding upon my time. I'll see what I can do about adding a kit for Cacher Pursuit as I get time. It'll be easier to add than the other two kits because recursion was a nightmare. Cacher Pursuit doesn't have any recursion.

I'm a little disappointed no one has helped me with any trivia questions, both on here and Facebook. Anyway, I'll upload some preview shots here so I can get some feedback. I might also upload it to the Wherigo Foundation site because it now has functionality where I can let the public play the cartridge in the Webwigo emulator.

You could leave the old Wherigo kit as it is for the users that now use it and make a copy were you add the trivial pursuit functions and introduce it as an extended version on the same startpage. I think it should be a great version for teaching kids history. Just make a 10 step walk around in a historic place and have questions here and there which starts with a selection question and if right you could go deeper and deeper in the questions and collect points based on how fast you reach the next step on the tour. In historic places there are often signs with fact that could cover the essential answeres. You will learn more if you stay and studie on the place in the historic perspective.

  2. I put together a cartridge last night called "Cacher Pursuit". It's a cartridge based on the Trivial Pursuit game (you answer a question for a category and collect a pie wedge for that category; collecting all pie wedges win). I'm making it in such a way so it's easy to change around and use in other areas around the world. Unlike Whack-A-Lackey and Battleship, it will not be a Play Anywhere cartridge; you'll have to position your zones. The cartridge can support as many zones and categories as you want. The questions can be a combination of open-ended and multiple choice. It supports multiple correct answers (for plural, abbreviations, or common misspellings). You can give it an upper limit of retries for each category or the player can exhaust the category's question bank before a game over is reached. If you have an idea for another feature or would like to submit artwork, please let me know. I think this will be a fun game for everyone.

For the first month or two, the cartridge will be closed source while I watch log entries for any issues. Once I'm happy with the code and its performance, I'll release it as open source, complete with instructions, so everyone can make a Cacher Pursuit cartridge in their area. You can modify the question bank however you like. I even intend on adding it as a kit to Wherigo\\kit, though it won't be as easily editable in a builder application. If you make a cartridge based off this, please provide attribution and let me know when the listing is published so I can enjoy the log entries with you.

That leads me to the purpose of this post. As the cartridge will later be open source, I thought it would be fun to ask the community to suggest some trivia questions. A cartridge developed by all of us. The questions need to be related to geocaching or Wherigo, should be short, and have short answers. Challenging questions are very welcome. Multiple choice questions should have at most four answers, preferably three. I'll pick from the questions submitted and add them to the cartridge, giving credit on the question. Let's have some fun with this!

Sounds to be a fun new idea! When do you have it up and running? For me it would be nice to have it web based as the Wherigo kit which I have used for my latest 10 caches. In the Wherigo kit there are some questin function but it does not work so good as you can try until you get a proper answere. I think that the present Wherigo kit could be updated with this idea of a cacher pursiut function with limited number of trials j-annie (sweden)

  3. I've played one reverse Wherigo in Nürnberg. When I was in Mainz, I've tried to use the cartridge to play the reverse Wherigo there, but my player hasn't accepted the code, without any error message.

Do I need to download new cartridge for every reverse Wherigo, or does it function so, that I should be able to use single scenario for all of them? If the first is true, why do I need to enter the 3-line code at start? I don't get the idea yet, how it exactly works...

The cartridge is the same but the 3 line code gives the coordinates for the place , the codes are different for different places.

There seems to be a new version of the cartridge so you have to deleete the old in you phone and load a new version

  4. As there's currently no Wherigo at all where I live I'd like to place one myself. For a start I thought about something that sounds easy, though I don't know if it is: go to start coordinates and walk/drive in a random direction. Press a button and the cartridge will give the distance to the cache without the direction. Rinse and repeat. Is this easy to do? And is it possible to get this running on iPhone/Android/handheld gps all at the same time? Which builder might be the easiest for a beginner to build this little project?

    Thanks a lot,

    Mrs. terratin

check the Reverse geocache . To make one you have to visit one to get the code for the editor. I have 3 running but there are a lot in US.

You start the cartridge and get the range than move and get a new distance, then you have two options move in one direction and try again. You have 50 attempt but it should do with below 10 to find the cache

  5. that is a standard problem first time you should upload the cartridge on Wherigo.com.

    Solution

Reduce the text in the description part (just put som words) and do not use Html

Then when you have uploaded the cartridge with success , edit and past in the parts you cut away

    good luck

  6. Inspired by this, I just made a short Wherigo using the //kit and Google maps alone. We went out to test it and it works a treat! Good accuracy for GPS etc. I will be making a proper one soon using this same process. Well done and thanks to the developer. Wherigo is far from dead ...

I made a small one as well using the http://Wherigo.rangerfox.com/rangerfox/Wherigo/kit/Builder/default.aspx?id=0a37c75e-d75d-4be8-aebd-bcbd0ce5371f and saved it but I do not know were the saved Lua file is stored and how to create a .gws to load into my iphone via itunes. Do I have to load it into the Groundspeak editor and create it the normal way?

I made a new cartridge in 60 minutes, I just copied the text and pictures from one of my old that I earlier produced in Groundspeaks editor.I compiled itto a.gwc file and put it in my iphone with the help of Ituned. The web interface is very simple to work with as we now can work with the map (that did just work in Us earlier) and with copy and past I made 4-5 zones and went out and tried it out. I used swedish letters and that workt well, in the Groundspeak version it always crasched. There are of course just simple funktions(no selections or pick up things or talk to creatures) and you have to walk to the first zone to get the next one to appear but the editor is very simple to work with and for many applications were you should walk to different point to get information for the final cache locations this base plattform is enough. We look forward with high spirits for a new future with Wherigo and hope that Ranger Fox adds facilities to the platform and informs us Wherigo nerds in this forum and in the News on the http://Wherigo.rangerfox.com/rangerfox/Wherigo/kit/News/

The lua file (GWZ) is created dynamically, on demand. This is what you'd load into an editor. To load onto your iPhone, you'd have to create a GWC. This is done from the page that lists your cartridges. Click on the cartridge and then click the option to compile/build your cartridge.

While Groundspeak holds the patents and intellectual property, it's the community that's keeping Wherigo alive. If Groundspeak waits too long, the community may eventually develop all the tools. If this happens, Groundspeak will have a very difficult time controlling Wherigo and deciding its future.

Why is there someone from my home state on this forum? I thought Wherigo was dead there.

I made a a small "dogwalk from my door with some zoones and it worked nicely. The zoones must be an open place as they are so small but it was very easy to make and edit the details. It fits a step by step walk to collect numbers to the cache location coordinates or questions(hints). It even worked with our special letters. Good work Ranger Fox. I will inform the Wherigo people in Sweden about it

The interest for Wherigo in Sweden is big and I have 10 Wherigo cartridges (with a lot of Favorite votes) that I own here in the Gothenburg region and helped to create additional 10 in Sweden and Norway. There are a lot of problems with the editor and it is as you say "a hard days night" to create one with the editor. Earlier it was possible to use the wizzard but (on winXP) but now I use a basic cartride with 10 zoones which I stored when things worked, hooping that Groundspeak should wake up and give us an update. Now with the iphone/adroid it is fun to play the games and as I now have a Montana I make them only for smartphones with somewhat bigger zoones. Has anyone some inside contact in Groundspeak please use it to push for the Wherigo!!

  11. I am from a geocaching background and today I did my first Wherigo. I really enjoyed it and so want to create my own cartridge for others to play.

I have only done one cartridge so dont really know what you can do with a cartridge. The one I did was in Leicester which was the nearest one to me but still 20 miles away. So its not really practical for me to try lots of cartridges to build up experience and ideas.

The one I played took me on a historical tour of the city and had me picking up items as I went. I suspect that Wherigo can be much more creative than this. So I would love to hear of other things that can be done and whether it is practical for a newbie to be undertakingbuilding them. I want to create a good experience for the end user but I dont want to make it too difficult for me to create.

Many thanks for any suggestions and guidance.

If you are planning to use the Groundspeak editor I have a 9 page tips and trick manual in my dropbox with some live cartridges that I have made that you can check.just drop me a mail with your mailadress.

  12. Here's what I'd like to see.

Groundspeak declares Wherigo as open source and provides all code and documentation. They establish an Open Source Wherigo Group to control the "official" source and specification of Wherigo. I suspect many of those involved here will take up pieces of the project and move it forward. Already, without any formal group we have developed at least two builders and numerous players. Having access to Groundspeak's proprietary work as well as thr work of others who have developed builders and players and who wish to share their work in a accordance to some open source licensed, will provide a platform to move the development of Wherigo forward. The Open Source Wherigo Group can provide guidance as to which new features should be supported and when old features become deprecated, so that the builders and players that are developed will have some degree of compatibility.

The future of Wherigo is with the smartphone players. New capabilities for muli-Player interaction will be among the features added and these will require the network connectivity that smartphones provide. So it doesn't surprise me that Garmin would drop the player from their units altogether. With the open source model, though, if there is demand for players on dedicated GPS units, someone will likely develop one and with the proper license it might be a no brainer for Garmin or other GPS manufacture to provide this with their units.

For Wherigo to move forward it should be freed from the constraint of being a proprietary Groundspeak product that will always be relegated to the back burner. Let the Wherigo community at it and watch it develop.

Groundspeak can continue to provide Wherigo.com as a the "cartridge store" where users can download Wherigo cartridges and support Wherigo geocaches. But they would be out of the Wherigo development business except for their participation in the Open Source Group.

GOOD NEWS from Bryan ( Groundspeak) on the FADs Event in Sweden 2011 nov 5th.

We had a information meeting and could put questions to him and his colleague Jeremy

I put the question about the future of Wherigo and an update of the official builder and he informed us that they just the other day had a board meeting and made an action plan with 50 items and sayed that a new Wherigo editor are due in 2012 (he said that I should contact him if they did´nt!)The new Wherigo editor was on place somewhere 10-20 on the list and their plan was to create an editor with reduced functions as the problems with the one from 2008 was that they aimed to high and made it with too many functions that did not work and made many people frustrated using it.

I guess that this really good news for us that has struggled with the beta version!!

A new contact with him this week jan2012 and

    he wrote

""We are still discussing the approach and don’t have a conclusion yet. I am hoping to know more within the next 2-3 weeks but, realistically, this will be a longer process to decide and then complete the project. We are committed to moving it forward though and I believe we will be making significant progress within the next few months"

I think this is wery good news for us Wherigo fans!!!

  13. I downloaded the Wherigo builder, went through all the tutorials and now I can't get through the first screen. When I attempt to create a starting place (either in builder or the test build Wizard) from an address I get the message that says "Error looking up address. The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable." I can't get the thing to start the new cartridge because I can't save it because the server. Is anyone else getting this problem? I've tried for getting close to three days with the same message.

    Thanks!

The map only works in US. Try normal streetnames without funny letter, you can very east change the coordinates later

  14. I uploaded a cartridge a bout a week ago. Today I am trying to edit and publish my cartridge and it will not let me. I get an error. is the edit function part of the site down? I have been trying to 3-4 hours.

    Thanx

I had the same problem and found a topic adressing it on this forum. The content of the tips was to reduce the text in the short and long description and then when the page is accepted add text until limit.

  15. Before tu upload to the official Wherigo website , I would like to run my cartridge on my IPhone. Do you know the way to upload directly this gwc file to my apple device.I know it's working with other devices but I don't know how to transfer my cartrdidge without using the Wherigo website. thanks

Connect your Iphone and open itunes, go to programs, scrool down to data below and find the Wherigo app "add" your "cartridge file" .gwc and syncronice. Go out and try it out

  16. No updates since May 2008, over a year and a half ago? For a buggy player and builder considered in beta development? It's a neat idea but I wonder if its worth much trouble if its dead, development wise.

  17. I know that I found this document folder when the app was called PiGo earlier but now I cannot find it. I open Itunes and have all programs (apps) try to rightclick on the app but do not see the documentfolder, where alla my downloaded files should be, or?

    j-annie

    - click on your iPhone on the left under "Devices"

    - click on the tab "Apps" on the top on the right side of the screen

    - scroll down to find the lists "Apps" and "Documents"

    - click on "Wherigo" in the "Apps" list

    - the Documents list should show the documents of "Wherigo" and

you can add your cartridge from there

    Good luck again!

Thanks found it below. Now I can do a cartridge just for Iphone (smartphones)

  18. That's right. I'm aware of these being your only options:

    1. Publish to Wherigo.com, but don't show it in the listing. Browse to the cartridge on the site using the iPhone and download it.
    2. Use iTunes to copy the cartridge to the device. To be honest, I dislike this way because iTunes wants to spend time syncing and all I want is half a minute to copy the cartridge over.
    3. Set up a web server on your computer and publish to a directory. Point PiGo's browser to your computer (to type in the URL, pull down the browser's page and you'll see the address bar). You may also be able to access it via network share. You could always email yourself a link to wherever you have the file, copy it to the iPhone's clipboard, and paste it into PiGo's browser.

Perhaps, later, when Groundspeak works on the Wherigo API, you'll be given a small temporary repository with which to load cartridges to PiGo and other Players using the API.

  19. I have built 7 Wherigo cartridges in Sweden and when I had my Oregon 550T i could test them before publishing them. Then came PiGo and I adapted the games for the Iphone and updated the games on the Wherigo page to a new version.I have sold my Oregon and bought a Montana without Wherigo as the games work much better in smartphones.

Now the problem; Earlier I just compiled the cartridge to my computer and just moved it over to the oregon and try them out.

Now I plan a new cartridge just for smartphones but I do not know how to test it. I can not publish it before testing but that might be the only way to load it into the smartphone (iphone) as you only load the cartridge direct into the phone. There are a Cartridge Compile service but is it possible to load it into the smartphone that way? The Iphone access I guess only the oficial Wherigo page for download.

I could of cause publish it on the offical site and write a Text "Just for testing by the owner"

    Any solution?

    j-annie

  20. When I run some Wherigo games with Iphone a get a message complaining that I am low on memory and will shut down. The game is saved but I have to restart and sometime it works sometime not. Is there a solution or what is the problem . The Iphone has lots of internal memory. I will send the question to PiGo as well!

  21. Is there a "fix for dummies" somewhere, you know, that looks like the Wherigo tutorial? I have been experiencing this issue trying to create my first cartridge, and now at least I understand the issue. I don't however have the tech savvy to understand some of the directions explaining just how to repair the issue. I have a Windows Vista laptop, so presumably, I need to install some kind of patch or something. Beyond that, I don't understand what all you're all saying I'd need to do. Thanks!

Open notepad and copy to it the line I have in post #8. On a new line, type "pause" without the quotation marks (this will allow you to view the output). Save the file as "Wherigo.bat" to your desktop. Make sure it is .bat and not .bat.txt. Now, double-click on the file. The command prompt will open and the script should do its thing.

I can also give you a really basic step-by-step instruction if you'd like.

I have tried all proposals above.

I first installed it in program files instead in (x86) but then I tried to install the Microsoft. Net Framework 2.0 as suggested in the editor installation lines. Win7 did not like this. Then I made an installation in (x86) and put in the unziped file by the snail instead of the exe file. But I have had no luck. I think a basic step by step instruction could be a nice step to solv this issue for us. Please

  22. A simple way to avoide that everything could be solved in the emulator is to ask about something on a sign, a number or something that not is possible to check. I take a picture of the sign (could be any sign) and use a paintprogram and add some paint (paintshop) and say that some kids made graffitti over some numbers and the task is to check it and this number I use as part of the coordinates for the final cache. In other cartridges I have used things in the nature, the length of a rock ,number of rock on a clearly defined spot.

  23. Hi,

I’ve just started to build my first Wherigo cartridge. There are still a number of things I need to find out how to do.

I found it very easy to set up zones as active/visible. What I can't seem to be able to do is make them inactive/invisible when the player exits each zone.

Also I want to have some player input in the nature of a question with a check on with a true/false loop. I guess I need to load up 10 variables with the numbers 0 - 9 then have the input at the zones checked against the value that I have predetermined.

    Can anyone help?

    Jim

I have made a 7pages hint and tricks document how to do a simple cartridge including your problems with zones active /unactive. Send me a message with your mailadress if you wish that I connect you to my dropbox.
