  1. I found a really neat park--cool features and great history--but no one seems to know who manages or even owns the land. The DNR says it's owned by the local college, while the local college says that they donated it to the state. It's 60 flat acres of prairie with a 40'tall sandstone formation at one end, and was a tourist attraction/landmark/picnic location as far back as the 1880s. Great spot for a cache if I can find someone to ask permission! It doesn't even have parking or signs right now and hardly anyone knows about it, so my current project is getting a cache out there.

I was also working really hard to put an Earthcache out, but so far none of the neat geologic features around here are very accessible to the public.

Ask your county assessor's office. They should be able to tell you who owns the land.

  2. Ok bs and gs, its that time of year when the young at heart turn their thought s to spring geocaching.Thought it'd be fun to get a list of all th reasons why spring is the best time of year to geocache. I'll go first:

    1. The underbrush isn't thick yet

    2. The bugs arent out yet

    3. Don't need to mess with mittens anymore

    4. Don't need to messs with snow shoes any more

    5. Great reception with no canopy cover

    6. Don't need to deal with containers frozen into a tree stump anymore

Holy crap you guys must be really dedicated to cache in those conditions. I was out caching on Saturday and it was about 72 degrees and I was complaing about how cold it was.

OK. That's just absurd. 72 can in no way, shape, or form be considered cold.

Edit: Unless you're giving temperatures in Kelvins that is.

  3. For some reason, some people feel that if they can't find a cache, then it has to be missing, and they'll just toss a replacement cache wherever they feel one should go, without contacting the owner or anything. It's stupid, but it happens.

  4. I know this is late, but better late than never, right? I would like to apologize for acting like a complete jerk in this thread just because I disagreed with someone. I have a very bad habit of not thinking before posting. If I offended anyone, I am very sorry. Like I said, I tend to post before thinking, which can, and often does, get me into trouble. Hopefully this post is more well thought-out than most of my other posts.

  5. Otis, I have to agree with you on that cache. The neighbor is a schmuck. I don't know who he is and don't wanna know. I have found that one though. I brought all the kids with me. Maybe thats why he didn't holler at us. Maybe we were lucky and he wasn't home. Either way Im glad we got that one 'done'.

NOw that youve been using your new GPS for awhile do you still like it as much? I still have my old blue Legend and am thinking of moving up to something with a color screen but haven't decided on any one model yet. I'm curious what you think of yours.

I love it! It works way better than the POS Vista I had before it. It gets a signal within seconds and is very accurate.

  6. Cemetery caches go on my ignore list. They are disrespectful, and should be banned.

Thank you for trying to force your opinion on everyone. I'm glad you're not running the site.

WOW! That was incredibly rude! OP asked opinions. Only opinions that agree with you are permitted!

Sorry. It was the way you worded it. Just flat-out saying "They should be banned." That makes me think you want to take away something other people enjoy.

  7. I don't have a photo handy at the moment but I saw a sign that was a cow. It was like a deer crossing sign but had the out line of a cow instead of a deer.

Oh yeah...we have those all over here in Wisconsin. Many farmers have grazing pastures for their livestock that are on the opposite side of the road from where their main farmland is. Therefore, it is often necessary for them to herd several of them together and do a sort of cattle drive right across the highway. Heck, there's even a guy here on the edge of town that has a tunnel underneath the highway for his cattle to move so that he doesn't have to herd them. They just move back and forth at their own free will. It's actually pretty cool to see.

I'm pretty sure it's in Banff National Park in Alberta where they built an overpass for wildlife to use so they don't have to cross the highway, and the wildlife actually uses it.

  8. There are threads for other states' cachers to chat in. How come there isn't one for Illinois?

Because it only gets posted to every three months? B) and therefore is hard to find? ;)

It's not my fault. I post in it when I have something to say. Unfortunately, no one else seems all that interested in having a thread to chat in. :)

  9. I know I've only found 2, but why am I not on the list?

Because you haven't posted your numbers here. Now you have and you are on the list next time it is updated.

But I had already posted my numbers before the most recent update. :)

It's no big deal though. I was just curious.
