  1. Hello there, The delorme PN screen is about 1/2 the size of the garmin oregon screen, no lie. If you can handle that no problem. I find the oregon screen too small myself. I wpuld love to buy a delorme if they would change the formfactor and give me a bigger screen.
  2. Screen size is my problem with the delormes
  3. Holy %#@$. Watch out for those people. Now they have a 400t for $499 while a 200 and 450t are BOTH at $369.99! I guess they are hoping for some suckers. No doubt the prices will change but that is what is showing now
  4. Yikes! Now that I think about it at least $1500 on units and maps. Well worth it in the end.
  5. Sure...one item at a time! That would be extremely time consuming even for a small number of items. And geocaches transferred wirelessly are sent with only basic info (like that contained in a LOC file) so there will be no description, hint, logs on the target unit, only the name, size, difficulty, terrain and coordinates are sent. And you can't transfer Wherigo cartridges (at least not on a Colorado...perhaps they added that feature on the Oregon, but I doubt it). What idiots came up with the idea of wireless transfer for the Colorado and Oregon but made it so lame. You basically can't transfer the usual gpx file info? That is freaking ridiculous. Thanks for that wireless uselessness Garmin. I have not used it with my oregons and I see that I will never need it. I guess it justified the over $600 price of the first oregons.
  6. I saw it but it but it did not work worth a dadgum. Search for a geocache. It does not seem to exclude any.
  7. The legend hcx and vista hcx will take micro sd cards and do turn by turn routing. I like my venture hc as a backup but I do drive out of the map area sometimes. It is not huge. I suggest looking for a good deal on a paperless Oregon or Dakota. I upgraded from a 400t to a 450 and sold my old one cheap. Cheaper than some people are asking for vistas and legends. Look for a sucker selling like me.
  8. Good job. My only problem is the vista is not paperless and you don't cover all of that. As for the jerks who posted tell them to take a hike.
  9. I would like to transfer the waypoints I have created not the caches I have loaded. It is late, I am being worked to death, and I need to get the 400t off to a happy geocacher quick. Thanks.
  10. Not that I wouldn't heartily recommend a purpose built hand-held unit, but if you'll tell us what make and model of automotive GPS you own, there's a chance (just a chance) we can help you to shut off the road-snap feature on that until you get your new unit. Since you own an automotive GPS, you don't need anything with routing and street maps. That will save you a bunch. I'd be looking for a good deal on a new or factory refurbished Garmin eTrex Venture HC. The "HC" part is important as the color screen makes it easier to use, and the "H" means it uses a decent high sensitivity GPS chip set. You can get one brand new in the box for $125 on Amazon, and refurbs can be had for as little as $108. It's a pretty basic unit, but a very reliable performer. I agree with all of the above. The cheapest I would go is the venture hc. Look carefully as the ones I saw on ebay were overpriced. When you say "geocaching (handles loc/gpx easy" if you are looking for paperless geocaching that will cost a bit more. I don't know about the cheapest for that.
  11. The oregon 450 is an improvement over the 400t. From what I have seen the 62 models will not have any improvements in chipsets and accuracy. Hold out for the Indiana or Ohio Models some years down the road. If you get the 450 conntact me for some free help.
  12. My buddy is going to buy his dad a VERY cheap car gps. I think he should get at least him a nuvi that would work reasonably well for geocaching. My friend loves his explorist xl for it's big screen but it won't last forever and I am sick of dealing with the old technology. I have made him some custom topo and geologic maps but I don't want to mess with MMO anymore. What would you suggest to send him down the Garmin path.
  13. dadgum, that is exactly what I was thinking. Well I will just have faith in the new accuracy and it won't matter.
  14. Can anyone back this up? Might we not get a better quality product if it was made in the USA.
  15. Used but working fine. Mapped up with the city nav disk plus extras on a new 4gb micro sd. $240 shipped. Got plenty of Canada topos too.
  16. I hate to tell you but that oregon 200 you might get will be the same. Your performance with the legend sounds like what I have got from an oregon 400 and 450 and ALL others tried. My old venture hc is as probably as accurate as the oregons are. Ask delorme fans if they get better accuracy. I don't know. Remember that even if you drop 7 grand for a Trimble(10cm accuracy) you still have to contend with the hiders inaccuracy. The probability cloud is big so work on your read the mind of cachers skills
  17. For a "short" answer see the following. Here is the link for more of this and good stuff http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous?f=print M5.) Are there any tips to improve the Oregon's screen readability? One of the most common complaints about the Oregon is the dim, sometimes difficult to read screen. The situation is made worse by the fact that many of the pages including the map page use very dark backgrounds and color schemes. There are a few settings which will help improve the map page readability: Disabling the basemap (OR 300) or preinstalled Topo (OR 400t) is not the best option because you'll get poor map draw performance in the 12mi-50mi zoom ranges and no maps will be visible above 50mi. Leave the basemap or preinstalled maps enabled in all profiles, including automotive, and use the following settings to control background color regardless of the maps you are using: 1. Turn off the basemap (300) or preinstalled topo (400t) relief shading using Setup>Map>Advanced Map Setup>Shaded Relief>Do Not Show. If you are using track/north up mode or panning in automotive mode this will provide you with a white background except for areas that have land cover coloring (e.g. parks, golf courses, etc) 2. To eliminate land cover coloring goto Setup>Map>Advanced Map Setup>Zoom Levels>Land Cover and turn it Off. Note: In 2.5 this setting appears to be broken on the Oregon, land cover always shows up below the 8mi zoom level. If you do 1 and 2 the map background should be white no matter what orientation you are in and where you are located, except a body of water. Note you can also use Automotive Mode (vs. track up or north up) for Orientation, you'll see only a white background assuming you disable land cover as described in 2) above. Tip In your automotive profile disable Shaded Relief and Land Cover so that you always see a white map background. Remember to leave both City Nav and Topo enabled. Create two outdoor profiles: Hi Visibility and Normal. In both outdoor profiles enable just Topo enabled and in Hi Visibility disable Shaded Relief and Land Cover so you always have a white background. In my Normal profile I have Shaded Relief and Land Cover enabled so that I can see shading and land cover on the map. Your Hi Visibility profile can also be configured to load an all white background image (Setup>Display>Background Image) which makes other screens like the odometer and compass easier to read. I've provided a properly sized all white background image below.
  18. I would suggest the venture hc especially as it is cheaper at walmart. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?...gMethod=rr& Color screens are good and the one I use for backup might be more accurate than my oregon.
  19. Yes I would but the line still needs some work on waas and accuracy. Garmin topos do show park and gameland boundaries that the free topos for my area lack.
  20. Gone over to garmins from an explorist xl after trying a delorme. I have "issues" with my latest oregon 450 but who else has a big enough screen?
  21. Hi there. I have an oregon 400 which comes with the topo maps and more memory and have often wished I bought an oregon 300 with only a basic background map and less memory. Kind of the same as the 450t vs 450 difference. I usually use free topo maps from http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ but they do have their limits. The free maps I have do not show the state park boundary's which I needed today. The garmin topos did. Sadly there are no Garmin 24k US topo maps available for my area so I cannot comment. Driving maps will cost another $100. I think I can work on my maps(custom and others) and help you out. Just email me
  22. The solution is correct: Use GSAK and the "smart name" special tag (%smart). Those smart names are unique, you can't have two waypoints with the same name on the GPSr. GermanSailor [/quote You might want to walk us idiots through the process. I have messed with this problem with a vista and my head still spins when I try to recall it. I use a venture hc for a backup. I would love to show the cache names rather than numbers.
