Magellan Triton over Explorist (need electronic compass)
kentwoodkrew replied to eosxt's topic in GPS technology and devices
The triton is rather old tech with no free maps available. You can probably find a garmin dakota or oregon for around the same price. There are excellent free topo and driving maps available for garmins. Ask for guidance on where to buy on the forum. Now if you are interested in a mapped up used oregon 450 for $225 let me know. If not I would still suggest a dakota over a triton. If you have to get a triton check ebay. You might get an upgrade from the 500 -
Used venture hc in good shape for $75.
-
How about a garmin venture hc used for $75.00 shipped. In good shape with cable. It is not paperless and does not have an electronic compass. It is accurate, waterproof, and I can include a dvd with the most excellent topo maps you can add to it.I live in the same state. The instructions at GPSFileDepot can be confusing for a newbie so I can help you set up mapsource and the maps.

I think I had that problem with an explorist xl many years ago and found help at this site. http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/magellan/explorist/explorist400/firmware.html#basemap_backup Looks like you need to scare up a copy of the basemap. They have one available here which might work. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eXplorist/ Maybe you can find a 400 owner here who can send you the correct basemap.mgi file. Perhaps yours is corrupt. Can you tell me what size it is? Also available is a firmware update and lots of advice. Let me know how it goes. I had some terrible battles with the explorist xl but I managed to come out on top.

Hi. I would suggest waiting for the new etrex models to come out and watch here for good deals. I got my montana at $425 from ems. Lost leader deal I guess but it did not work. If you need a venture hc or oregon 450 mapped up cheap let me know as I would like to pay for my montana
-
Hi, how about a quality oz slouch hat for a oregon 450 mapped up for your part of the world? 8gb sd card included. I will take a NZ lemon squeezer too.
-
Hi. Sounds like you got a great GPSr but could you please stop drinking the haterade. Go find some caches with your dakota and let it go, OK. I was mad as hell at Magellan for some time but it all worked out. I love my montana but I will be very careful with the screen! Ken Darnell

Does Garmin lack common courtesy? No way!

Well done!

GPS with a large screen
kentwoodkrew replied to SoosieQBookLover's topic in GPS technology and devices
Buy the hubby some reading glasses. Keep an eye out on deals for the Montana and wait till Christmas or after for a good price drop. -
Montana hands down. My buddy Trickster who hates new technology and loves his old Explorist XL gave it a thumbs up and that is high praise. He liked the screen and said the interface was easy and intuitive. High praise from a gps luddite.

GPS for Car AND GeoCaching?
kentwoodkrew replied to LittleGoblin's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hmmm flexible budget. The Montana does all you want but it will cost. Add to that a talking mount at $52, maps at $100 or more unless you are clever, and aerial maps at $30 per year and not available in real time like a phone. I must add I love my Montana 600 at the low cost I got it. -
Forced USB Mass Storage Mode for Montana
kentwoodkrew replied to kentwoodkrew's topic in GPS technology and devices
Figured it out. Remove battery. Press the power button and then connect to computer. -
The 3 axis compass and 450 screen visibility are worth the money. I know, I sold my 400t here. Now of course I am going to sell my 450 to pay for my new Montana. Let me know where you live and I can tell you what maps I can include.
-
I had to try and add a map I made and the montana gets stuck saying loading maps. I have tried the procedure for oregons but I can't get into mass storage to delete the offending map. Any ideas?
-
I am still wondering about cheap options for my cheap Montana. Money is tight and times are hard. What would be a cheap speaker system to add to a cheap mount? How about antennas? Do They help? What is the connection type? I reckon I can run some wire to my backpack and set up something like a PRC-25. Would it help?
-
EMS says my Montana 600 should get here by Friday. Any ideas on a cheap mounted car setup? I can mix and match. The garmin price is not too bad but I always like to do it myself if possible. Or a cheap deal on the garmin mount? Oh yes, any ideas for adding a carabiner attachment?
-
Well if a short term solution of a used venture hc at $65 sounds good let me know. Not paperless. Does not take an sd card. Maps are good but it does not hold a very large one. Good accuracy but no compass. Will come with some very good maps on dvd topo 2008 etc you may be able to use later. Pm me. I need to pay for my new montana.

Kodak 2-AA Solar Charger - $15
kentwoodkrew replied to MtnHermit's topic in GPS technology and devices
While we are on the subject what about the chargers here http://www.solarmade.com/batterychargers.htm I see they have PHOTOVOLTAIC'S (EIPV) MODULES. How insane a project would it be make your own charger with one of those? -
Sold. Thanks for your interest.
-
Still got it and the Gander Mountain deal is over.
-
I fear not. Lowrance just is not big enough for people to bother. I don't know of any software available for making custom maps as there exists for Garmin, Delorme($$$), and older Magellans. Good luck.
-
Ah yes. I wish I had seen that deal at G M. Of course there is the rebate to deal with. Ok how about $180 and that is shipped.
-
Um, no. It's been on sale with rebates elsewhere recently, making it around $200 new in box. For a used one to be a good "garage sale" deal it would have to be priced substantially lower. You might have better luck over on eBay, with a wider audience of people who don't research pricing very carefully. Hi.Thanks for the info. As I hope to buy a Montana someday can you tell me where you are finding the best prices? If I had got it at $200 I might consider keeping it as a backup.
