  1. I just got a used 315 look for the general Magellin tips / threads here in the Forums. I found that it would be off furhter than I was expecting due to the way Mag 'average' by slowing down, turning off/on the unit I am getting results that I would expect. Just 2 data points but +/- 10ft in the open, +/-20 in cover. The manual is on their web site in PDF format, if you need that. It says +/- 15 meters (50ft) I'd recommend going somewhere open, like a baseball field, and then walking the paths to practice with creating marks, waypoints, routes. Check to see if you need to update http://www.magellangps.com/en/support/prod...rade_gps315.asp
  2. I didn't see this listed here - sorry if I missed it. http://www.pdxgeocaching.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=180'
  3. Go put someing 'desirable' in it. A First Finder gift, a TB, a special SI.
  4. quote: The storm could make the aurora visible as far south as Oregon and Illinois. Salem OR is on the 45th parallel. hmmm that sign would make a nice virtual cache... My home is 'about' n 45 30 w 122 52
  5. Go to some dog shows. Talk to the breedes/owners. Everyone is different in their needs. If possible, get a rescued dog. We were considering a Wiermeraner ( those Jetta dogs ) until we spoke with a couple breeders - can't leave them home alone, they need to be in a kennel/crate. I know several people with 'used' grayhounds, say they are wonderful as house pets. We have a lab and a lab mix.
  6. I feel the puzzles are really a whole sub cache type. Much like micros. What I don't care for are the cache's, multi or puzzle, that end up in a /much/ different place than where you start. One in my area is 4 parks. You can guess where that name comes from. Another is Clone of My Own, the cache is 4+ miles from the coordinates. Some puzzle caches address this well, however. Start at this fountain, and go ... and you end up in the park next to or near by that starting point. The puzzles I tend to avoid are those you ahve to solve in the field. Coordinates give you a sign, read the sign do some math based on something on the sign and move. If you are expecting a 1/4 mile stroll and have brought the family along and all of a sudden it is a 5 mile hike, well that is disappointing. I also know cachers who find puzzles to be the 'best' kind of caching there is. I heard some lamenting about how few there where in LA, for example. So I'd definatly like to see a separate entry/icon for them - and not just the 'unknown' or 'mystery' cache icon.
  7. quote:Originally posted by pdxmarathonman:Milwaukie. I hope those eastsiders don't take too much offense to being considered _around Beaverton_ Those are the Eastsiders? I was thinking they were the Bend/Redmond/Baker City/Pendelton folks. Maybe the group I was thinking of is the DrySiders.
  8. Especially near Olympia - How has anyone done? I saw 8" of rain in the Oly area, 3 in Seattle. Wow. I personally wouldn't cache in that!
  9. I heard yesturday that there are some public domain icons/images of GeoCaching that could be used on webpages or to make cards etc. Can anyone point me in that direction? TIA
  10. I know that not all of you view the General forum, there is a thread on cache density. So if you are thinking about placing a cache, think "west" like Hillsboro. There is 1/2 the caches in a 10 mi raduis from Hillsboro than from Beaverton about 100 vs about 200. Has anyone gotten all 200 around Beaverton, yet? (From the Seek page, entering ZipCode)
  11. Beaverton, Home of yesturdays Beaverton Cache Machine 97008 1480 @100 225 10 7 1 97005 Also Beaverton 226 10 8 1 Going West Aloha 97006 203 10 8 1 Hillsboro 97124 (Near the Airport) 99 10 2 1 Hillsboro 97123 113 10 1 1 Clearly at 10 miles, these zip codes overlap.
  12. If you feel a cache is full of "junk" what is the proper etiquette? Write the owner to check or just 'trash out' the junk, or ???
  13. Joyson - Thanks for the Great Fun.
  14. If someone is taking MAX to Beaverton, you will then need to take a Bus to the starting point. www.tri-met.org Or email me, And I'll get you on the right bus.
  15. quote:Originally posted by bazzle: ... Not even the TB that was supposed to be there. I think that is becoming my biggest pet peeve of late, that being folks who take a bug, log the cache and never mention they took the bug or do not bother to log it out of one cache until days (or sometimes weeks) later when they place it in another cache. Basic etiquette is to log the bug as soon as you log the cache find, does not seem that tough to me... http://www.pdxgeocaching.com So it isn't just me. I was taling with 1/2 of Kiwimonster earlier this week complaining that missing TB seem to be rampant here in the Portland Westside Area (Beaverton, Aloha, Hillsboro) Does anyone else feel this way?
  16. quote:A guy with Traditional Caches 273 ... and then you have: [quote} The problem I have is not maintaining them but that I have so many ideas that I want to use, Darkmoon So if someone has placed 200 or 300 then others who have good ideas may feel shut-out. Is there a way to look at the STATs to see an average - of those who have placed cache's, on average how many have they placed. The average of all members would skew the number down because of the many who have not placed any.
  17. I don't have anything to do with altering pages, but one item I have to question is the use of copyright images. Many users have Avatars or Signature blocks which feature items I know to have copyrights. Music like the Hogans Hero's theme would too. Now it is possible, those users have written permission from the holder to use these images, music, in this way. If I were the 'publisher' I'd be shy from leaving those types of things on the site, unless I had legal advice it was ok. As for me, I like those cache pages where the author has spruced them up a bit. Just seems nicer.
  18. Well I hope that TPTB sue the folks at Comcast and or michael lapaglia. If you can get sued for telling someone a feature of the computer operating system they own ( as is happening today to a Princeton student.) Then I'd think you'd want to protect your Intellectual Property and defend it vigourusly. Otherwise, Comcast might end up owning the name and term related to GeoCaching - and we'd all have to pay them to use it. just my 2c.
  19. Anyway to get the forums in a news format? ie news.Groundspeak.com or news.geocaching.com The one item I have seen in the forums is annoying posts. With news readers, you can often block those with a 'bozo' feature. That would be nice.
  20. Google the site, from google.com enter this into the search window - not counting the quotes. Or use the advanced search on google. "Search Term site:www.geocaching.com" I have better results with this method than with using the search on the site. YMMV

    Search

I have run several seaches only to get no results - even when manually I can see at least one correct result. Please look into this feature.
  22. quote: I think I would like to do the "HUNT". Twice Retired -- I'd suggest you look in the location forum, post a city and see if you can meet up with some folks at a coffeshop, pub or park. You'll be able to spot 'em. As for purchase, if you have other hobbies, many can benefit from a GPS. Golf, ( where is that ball anyway) Fishing, ( I'm where the 'good hole' is co-ordinated, now where are the fish ) Hunting, ( Hey Joe, would you pack out my kill it is at xxx yyyyy ) Re-Enacting, ( oh, no .. I am standing where the first birrage will hit ) Photography, ( the gps says just take a couple steps back .... ) Shopping, ( where did we leave the car ) Theme Parks, ( where did we leave the car ) Airport, ( where did we leave the car ) You can even use a gps with your lawn mower to cut patterns in the grass. Have fun.
  23. Anyone use a laptop while out in the 'woods' ? How about in urban settings? either with a cellular modem or WiFi? How about handhelds? While I have both a laptop and a handheld, while caching, I generally just print out the page and use a pencil. Geekness aside, use the right tool for the right job. But I could see a benefit for being able to chat/email another cacher/owner when stumped.
  24. quote:Originally posted by OneOfEm:The following is from http://www.snopes.com/photos/brownrecluse.asp: _ I had just seen that! If you are reading the forums, then chances are good you are not actively caching. Check out the 'pictures' section of Snopes. Heed the warnings.
  25. I was reading someone celebrated leaving their 100'th cache. This made me think that this was too many. Once they have stuffed all the parks in the area, what fun is that for others? Isn't creating a new cache part of the fun of the game. ( note: not the Virtual nor Event caches, which I think are a complete different thing/activity but the traditional, puzzel, micro, muti (an x-part multi counts as 1 if in the same park) ) How many is too many? Or, perhaps what ratio is too high? I'm stumped for the 'right' word here - coutesey, ethic, sportsmanship... help me out.
