  1. I would recommend the PN-60. Just like the 40 but with more features and is supported by Delormes customer service because the 40 is outdated. You can currently get one new from jr.com for $219 with free shipping. So if you have any accessories for the 40 they will work with the 60, that's what I did. Edit to add: someone was selling their brand new in the box PN-60 for $200 on the forums here. You'll have to scroll down a little to find it.
  2. Have you highlighted any of the maps you want to send? I use map source but it should be similar to base camp. The first thing you need to do is bring up the map you want to copy onto your device. Then zoom way out so you can see all the tiles of the map. Select, by highlighting, all the tiles you want to move over to your unit. Now select send to unit. All done. A few things to remember: First, there is a lmaximum amount of tiles you can send to your unit (unless that has changed and someone can point that out) but I do not remember the number. Second, the transfer rate will be much faster if you can send the maps directly to the SD card via a reader vs directly to the unit. Sending them to the unit is a very slow process. Third, select all the maps you want to send because, unless this has changed, if you keep adding maps you will overwrite the maps you previously installed every time you add new maps. You will need to send them all at one time. This is all I can think of right now. Good luck.
  3. That will work. What I usually do, is I'll average the waypoints with the gps for a little while and then save. I will then walk away and approach from different angles as you have mentioned to see if I get back to the general area. If this works, I'm happy. If I have time, than I will hike a little longer and then try and see if I can get back to my point. If I do, again all is good. If I don't, I will re-average the coordinates and use those. Once I place and list the cache, I will then monitor the finds to see if there are any issues with location. So far, I have not had an issue except for one that took me three trips to get the correct coordinates. If you are concerned with your hide, make sure your hint will help them find the location once they get close to GZ. The most important thing to remember though, is to ensure you enter the coordinates onto the site correctly. There have been many publishings that I have seen that were in weird locations only to find out that the cache owner entered in the wrong coordinates.
  4. Can you add a "6" to any other position? Not really sure how to help you, was just curious?
  5. Sometimes mine are spot on to the listed coordinates and sometimes they are over 20-30 ft off. Seems normal to me.
  6. Hello, The Legend HCX is a great GPSr. A couple of things you might already know but you didn't state, this unit does not have an electronic compass. Therefore, you must be moving slightly to get an accurate reading. Next, have you updated the unit to the most recent firmware version? You may want to describe exactly what it is you are doing it and how you are doing it. This will help others understand how to help out but until then, these two things should help out a little. Good luck.
  7. Wow, an old post brought back. The answer to your question is yes. To manually enter coordinates, just hit the mark button, then scroll to the coordinates section, and update to the coordinates you want. This is also the way to mark sites for future hides, trail heads, parked car, updatd coordinates for geocaches, etc. To use the send to GPS function, you'll need to become a PM. Another option is to use your map source program and download the geocaches as .loc files and the open them onto map source. From here, you can send them to your CSX. Remember your unit does not support paperless geocaching in the true sense of paperless. The are workarounds but I never liked them and use my iPhone along with my CSX for the paperless aspect of caching. Hope this helps. Edited to fix iPad autocorrect
  8. There is an official Groundspeak app for that for the iPhone already. Granted it is not integrated into the geocaching app but there is one to download onto your phone.
  9. I believe you would need to create a bookmark listing of your hides to achieve that. If you use GSAK, you can also achieve this within their settings.
  10. Depends on the zoom level. Zoom out and the stars turn into smileys. I see the owned caches showing as smileys if I zoom out a notch or two. Seems to have shown up in the last day or two. The performance tweak Raine mentioned on Friday(?). You are right when I am looking at the regular map with all of the caches listed but when I look at a PQ I created of just my finds, it shows one star at a view where I can see North America, South America, Greenland, Europe, Africa, etc...
  11. I just looked at my hides and they are showing as stars not smilies. Not sure why it's happening to you.
  12. I have been watching this debate for quite awhile and I've been reading all the posts in all the different topics.I have finally found a topic that has enticed me to make a posting on this subject. I for one would not pay more for google maps. They were a nice feature but it hasn't killed my fun. I don't cache near as much as I used to or would like to, but what I like about my PM is the ability to receive updates of new caches in my area. When I do decide to go out and cache, I like to be able to download all the information into my GPS for paperless caching. Whether this download is done from the cache page or via a PQ, it really doesn't matter to me as long as I can get the cache description, hints, and previous logs. I like having access to all of the forum topics within the forums. These are some of the main reasons I became a PM, it had nothing to about maps. When I first started geocaching, I utilized Garmin's Mapsource as my mapping software database. I would load .loc files into it to get an idea of where the caches were that I was going to search for that day. I then moved to using Google Earth and downloaded PQ's into it to get an idea of how I was going to access certain areas for my aching adventure and create routes for me to travel. I eventually moved to using Delorme's Software and purchased the Satellite imagery plan and view my PQ's on that. Finally, I usually just pick an area that I haven't been to, look to see how many caches I haven't done in that area, and I run a PQ of that area and send it to my GPS. I really don't use the maps that much on the website. To reiterate my position, I personally would not want to pay more just to be able to have different maps. I personally would hate to have to go backwards from paperless caching to paper caching and to not be able to fully utilize the features of my more expensive GPSr's than having google maps back.
  13. I've gotten small ones from my local hobby/model shop.
  14. I have a Dakota 20 and find I need to keep the back light up pretty high to read also. I also have a Garmin 60csx and a PN-60 that I think are easier to read but the writing is smaller.
  15. There is a forum post somewhere on here that addressed that issue by utilizing a macro from GSAK. I am not sure where it is right now as I am currently using my iPhone to write this and it doesn't really allow me to save a link to another post to add here. Good luck Edit to add that I found it in the topics section called "list of cache names beside the map"
  16. Are you using a mobile device like an iPhone, iPad, etc? That function isn't working on those devices. They are working on a fix.
  17. You can get the PN-60 at jr.com for just under $220 shipped for a limited time.
  18. Yes, if a person logs from their phone it does not directly access the site as if you were doing it from your computer.
  19. Right now at jr.com, the PN-60 is $220.00. That's a great price, the only thing is it is on back order but they do honor the price and will ship as soon as it comes in. Good luck Edited for spelling
  20. You are only allowed to download 20 at a time per page. You can pick and choose which of the twenty you want or take all twenty. Yet I see that you are a PM and you could either run a PQ of an area that you want or as you stated in your post, could create a route and have a more specific choice of caches to download. Edited due to auto correct of an iPad.
  21. How did you save those coordinates to your GPS? Did you put the Geocaching icon on the waypoint you saved or did you just save it with whatever waypoint icon was set as the default icon? Try looking in your waypoints for the coordinates you saved because unless you added one of the geocaching icons to your waypoint, it won't be listed under the geocaches list. Just a thought...
  22. I initially thought that was the way it was going to be on the maps until I opened them on my laptop and was able to get the cache name there. Not too user friendly when you can't pull up the name of the cache on the map to get any info on it.
  23. As has been stated by others, there really isn't that much difference between the three units you have chosen except for how they operate by the user. Etrex 30, very similar to your current Etrex. The 450 has a touch screen and the largest screen. The 62s is very similar to the 60 series. The best way for you to evaluate what you like or prefer, is to go to a store like REI (or one similar) and try out the different units. This is the only way you will be able to determine which unit you like because with the three you have chosen, it's going to come down to user preference.
  24. I have a 60csx, actually have had 3 because of warranty issues, that does what you are describing. In fact all three have done it and it bothered me quite a bit until I figured out a fix that seems to work for me. First, the GPSr must be held completely flat when walking and using the electroninc compass or it will not work correctly. The second thing I do is to calibrate the unit as soon as I get out of my car and start my walk, hike, or geocaching adventure. The third thing I found was that if my GPSr was doing this and I put in a fresh set of batteries, no matter what my battery life was showing on the unit, the problem would go away. Just remember to recalibrate the unit. Since doing this, I have had no lingering issues with the compass pointing the wrong way. I still get the initial wayward pointing but as soon as I put in a fresh set of batteries and recalibrate the unit, the problem goes away. I hope this helps you out.
  25. Were you able to send PQ's before? In your settings for GSAK, did you set it up that the PN-60 is the default unit? I'm at work so I haven't tried to do a PQ on my 60 so I can't answer you about any issues.
