  1. Don't quit Remember that gps may have accuritcy of 20 ft. that means a 40 ft circle from your gz. also your looking for something that is out of place. a rock leaning against a tree. a pile of rocks or branches. Then too your gps might be reading wrong. I was more than one time 100 ft away from gz but was being told by gps I was at gz.
  2. You should have a regular magnetic compass with you to find North. The electronic one in nav. display is fine if you know where N. is. Point the N on unit to north and follow the arrow to cache. Look for something out of place. IE a pile of stones, a log leaning on a tree, a large flat stone leaning on something, and don't forget holes in trees. tboyla
  3. Hi; The gps says gz however accuracy is shown as with in 30FT. this means a 60 ft radius from where you are. also its not just laying in the open. look for something out of place ie pile of rocks, tree w/ rock or piece of bark leaning on it. Stand and turn 360 degrees looking out the 30 or whatever ft. and notice something out of place.
  4. I wouldn't be in the woods without my 55 yr old magnetic compass and a topo of the area. There is no battery to go dead and if the north pole goes dead we're in big trouble. I AM Terry.
  5. Some you find some you don't. Look for things out of place. Remember as mentioned already 20 ft near cache is really a 40 ft circle. Try approching from a different direction. I've been 4ft from "cache" and found it to be 400ft away more than once. Good cacheing.
  6. I cache alone. I usually tell my wife where i'll be. always have a charged cell phone with you in case you get stuck or lost. I've been lost in small areas (2 sg miles) and have used back track a couple of times. DON'T go into places if the hair on your neck is standing up. Remember there are coyotes in the most urban of areas, not just in the woods. She said "Back already "as I heard the back door slam shut. It must have been the dog.
  7. Download easygps gives everything you need.
  8. Make sure your gz reading is correct. I've been off by 400 ft more than once. I approach mark from a different starting point sometimes. If there are valleys and ofcourse hills in area signals can bounce. If your near a house and getting strange looks walk away. I AM TERRY
  9. I downloaded easygps to harddrive. then select waypoints and download to spare 4" disk drive. follow easygps to transfer to gps unit. hope this helps tboyla

  13. I have a few dnf . One i visited 5 times. What i do is approach from a different direction. Have found gps to be off as far as 400 ft. One was saying ground zero was 20 ft away. it was a home and i was on the wrong slope and 600 ft from cache. Imagine pokeing around the house and having someone calling the cops. Always try a few different directions and don't approach any houses. tboyla
  14. I'm a gpser for about two yrs. Found some did not find some. I go back to 1965 in the army when we would have enjoyed the use of these great devices. instead we used compasses and topo maps. i lead my squad cross country and found "caches". However when we got on the roads i got lost. just remembering what was almost the same thing. tboyla
  15. I have an old magnetic compass, at least 45 yrs, that i used to triangulate compass courses and in the army to find my way. electronics are ok but I'm sticking with my magnetic. NO Batteries tboyla
  16. Remember the the cable connects w/ wire following the body of the explorist. are you in file transfer mode? silly ? but is unit turned on? tboyla
  17. They are fine for getting there on roads;however, stepping off major road will lead to blank screen. This trye of gps has no land maps loaded. I use mine to git there, park, and as the other fellow does put it in the trunk annd get out a hand held unit and go find the geocache. Good hunting
  18. Do the jagged lines have more to do with pixils than data input? R pixils square or round? do they set side by side and on top of each other? Early morning 3:16AM thoughts. Terry
  19. Starting this activity by looking for a needle in a haystack is tough. Larger containers can be hard enough. Some folks think the GPS will take you to the cache and then you just look down and there it is by your feet, or maybe under the big X painted on the ground. Some hides are almost that easy. A lot aren't. Starting with a larger container size for your finds lets you get some experience before you take on the needle and haystack hides. Oh and yes, some nano hiders are sadists who enjoy your pain... REMEMBER THE BASICS: Look for something out of place,ie stone leaning on tree, branches piled against log. check accuratcy of unit ie within 30 ft means a 60ft circle. read found post on geo site.
  20. Finaly a use for all that pvc pipe I retired with. Now where did I put those caps.
  21. Some sections of the great USA are snow covered this time of year. Is it cheating to find a cache that has tracks leading to it. obviously you don't want to stop this great activity for some snow. whatyathink?
  22. able to do on my tomtom one. get off a road and your on a blank screen.
  23. My grandsons 2 and 5 "bought" me a geocaching backpack, tee shirt, water bottle, flashlite, etc. All from a geo site. Thanks guys for supporting a site with "your" money. I AM TERRY
