  1. Ridiculously easy to find and use, every single piece of Garmin software is available for download, and easily cracked including all 2008 products. This didn't use to be the case, but as GPS's become more mainstream, the demand went up and got the interest of the crackers. I choose to support the developers and purchase the software though.
  2. Could you ask him about a landscape mode for the display? I think in automotive mode, it would be ideal.
  3. I agree with dopoka, this unit requires a broader view than simply its geocaching abilities. I understand this is a geocaching website, but this particular subforum also happens to be the most active forum on the internet regarding handheld GPS's in general. dopoka, is petroleum jelly an adequate sealant in your opinion, or is there a superior product?
  4. After having this unit less than a day, I can see many of the units "problems" are simply people not knowing what they are doing.
  5. Just got my 400T today, having no problems at all. The unit receives a strong signal, even indoors. During the upgrade process it noted this was a chip type M. Free memory was in the 175M range toal memory 3 gig. I was able to load City Navigator NT 2008 maps covering Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri and Kansas into the remaining space. The autorouting is very similar if not identical to what I have seen in a friends Nuvi. I've only had it a few hours, and my primary usage is hiking and driving, so I'm not hung up on the geocaching issues at this point and am thrilled to this point. The unit is beautiful, and operating as expected. I'm surprised how heavy it is compared to an Explorist.
  6. Google Earth is probably the best way. Google Earth use the free version This place is wonderful http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ It creates files from your tracks and logs, which you open and view in google earth and then you can share with anyone. Here you can see a few things all done at GPS Visualizer Track converted to color coded profile. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/profile USGS Topo map superimposed over Google Earth Terrain Data http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/kml_overlay Track superimposed over all.
  7. People who don't want a postage stamp screen, do want a crossover device, appreciate the shaded DEM data, and don't feel a need to load 10,000,000 geocaches at once, yet can afford $600 for bleeding edge equipment. There's 10 people here tops that are the largest complainers about this unit. I appreciate their efforts to help Garmin move the unit and firmware forward, but really, the complaining and expectations of perfection are tiring.
  8. my screen protector ( Invisibleshield) actually made a few slight rubs disappear on its own
  9. Indiana happens to have some of the best satellite imagey available on Google Earth, but this is how mine looks.
  10. I would give this type of thread so much more credibility if even one PN-20 owner recommended a Garmin, or vice versa. The same goes for Magellan vs the Garmins, it's just an endless series of people defending their own decisions and touting brand loyalty. I do think the 400T has the potential to convert a lot of Explorist users though.
  11. and they have a 14 day exclusive on Colorado 400T's WEIRD HUH?
  12. 1.53"W x 2.55"H (3.8 x 6.3 cm); 3" diag (7.6 cm) <-the colorado
  13. Have you tried any of the autorouting or turn by turn functions ? I would suspect its similar to a Nuvi?
  14. So, If I own Topo 2008 and can load customs, is the extra $100 on the 400T just for 1:100,000 topo basemap? I live in the midwest, 50 foot elevation intervals aren't very exciting. Is the 3d rendering real time or only "snapshots" of a current view?
  15. new! bonus! I'll fill a 1gig SD card with the maps of your choice, topo and/or directroute! ( This is probably the most difficult part about owning and using an explorist)
  16. oh btw, if you think I'm insane feel free to let me know what you think the market value should be, you can't hurt my feelings
  17. I have a gently used Magellan Explorist 500LE, which is about a year old. It was originally purcashed as an Adventure Bundle, full description here... http://www.amazon.com/Magellan-Explorist-5...e/dp/B000MG63VC I have added a 12V car adaptor, 2 Aftermarket Lion Batteries, a vehicle mount, and a "InvisibleShield" screen protector. This does not include a wall charger, Lions will recharge via usb slowly or in the car. It's all been very well taken care of, and is absolutely everything you need to be a complete GPS nerd like myself. This unit is capable of doing turn by turn navigation as well when used with Magellan's Directroute software (not included, but available to the persistent), I have tested this and it works fine. Total retail to replace would be about $330, I'd consider any offer over $225, plus actual shipping costs. FYI, I am listing this on other forums, it may not sell here. If not, I'll Ebay it next week. I love this unit, but looking to upgrade to the next generation units.
  18. Not to be rude, but your post is inaccurate. Use the import tool to bring in other file formats. It's posts like this that inaccurately make these units look bad, when it's simply the operator not understanding how the software or hardware work.
  19. well, it's been sitting in my windowsill all day, backlight on low, 13 hours to this point, still showing 25%
  20. I just bought two SNN5595B batteries off of ebay for 12.95 shipped I am doing a test today on a fully charged battery to compare them to the rechargable AAA and clip I was using. Actually, I ordered 5595B's, but I got 5726B's . They fit, and charge overnight via USB. I'll let you know how it goes.
  21. I do have the car charger that piggy backs onto the data cable, is that the best method?
