  1. The Garmin site has a plugin for downloading caches to the unit. I'm not sure if the "download to Garmin " works off the GC site for this unit. I have attempted this with the c340. If it's located in a parking lot or right aoff the road it works fine but when you get off road your pretty much on your own. There is no way to input coords and no "off road" settings available.
  2. Just ordered a new Compact Flash GPS for my aging Axim x5 What would be the best software to use with the CF GPS on the Axim? I would like to be able to input coords and use the Axim as the GPS to find the caches. As you can see I am a regular member so I would only have access to LOC files and the coordinate information from GC and the full paperless route is not a necessity but I would like to get some good use out of the CF GPS. I already use software to download cache pages to the Axim if I wish to have a copy of the page during the hunt. I have seen several programs that appear to utilize the GPS but their discriptions are often incomplete and I have not tried any yet to see what they are able to do. Still waiting on the CF GPS to arrive but want to be ready when it does. Freeware reccomendations?
  3. I too have the old etrex. While you have the "OK" highlighted at the beginning, Move up to the flag symbol at teh top and change the name using the same method as discribed for setting the coordinates. Name it something like the cache name. This way you will be able to find it later if you should need to return to the cache or are entering the coords from a location other than near the cache. It will then be in the menu list of waypoints. You can always (with the name changed or left as the default # assigned) by going to the nearest waypoint when you are near the cache or selecting it by name if you choose. If you do not name it you will eventually have a slew of numbered waypoints with no idea of what they are. This ( a waypoint # designation) would happen every time you hit "mark"
  4. Looking at the logs... It sounds to be perhaps longer than a film can, free hanging, well camoed and in the pine that leans. I could be off base here but thats half the fun when you find your totally wrong.
  5. Until you get a GPS you will find the urban caches easier to locate using the maps w/ sat image. They usually get you right in the area. The cache in the woods will be more difficult as there are fewer landmarks that you will be able to use. The photos are usually taken when there are few leaves on trees which may aid in finding landmarks or tree type to look for. As previously stated stick with the lower difficulty ratings and lok for the "orderly" placement of natural objects. The straight lines quote is a good one and works more often than you might think.
  6. I would think it is in your profile, Click yourself to view profile, Edit profile and check the "Accept friends request" box. It should have a check to allow friend requests. If it is checked it must be some glitch in the system.
  7. No thats not the norm. I'm curious how you manage to find them at a 75' + distance from the coords. 25' -30' seems to be the max distance for common error and that usually prompts a lot of DNF or "far off coordinate" logs.
  8. Yes get several under your belt before doing one yourself. It will give you ideas on what makes a good hide. But a good micro should be in the mix. A well placed micro in the right environment is always a good idea. Take some time with the container if your considering a micro. They need not be just a bison tube hanging from a tree or a film can stuck somewhere under a lamp post. A carefully crafted container blending in to the surroundings is always a welcome surprise and highly respected when done well.
  9. Many just use the short and long discription as a forced paragraph break. Short usually for a brief location or general information such as for a series of caches. The long discription for a more detailed story or informational section such as in a puzzle cache. Use them how you like or not at all. It's up to you. I would agree with the suggestion of not making it active until you have reviewed the page yourself to see that the discription "appears" the way you like it, then click "yes this listing is active" for the reviewer to do their thing.
  10. I will review logs on caches I've found to see if the CO posted a note in response to my log or to see who else I know has found it and to see what they thought of the cache. But up to no good? Not sure what I would be looking for in a log. What? "Hey we found your cache and stole it"?
  11. Only found one camera in a cache. The cache page said it was there so I was expecting it. It was located at the Lowes Speedway near Charlotte so it ended up with several pics of people that were there for the racin'. They are anonymous enough and this one appeared fairly popular. Perhaps being in a high traffic area helped. I routinely checked the page waiting for the film to be developed. Go for it.
  12. There is some GREAT work here. Anyone care to give this a try? Termite Hunter Male, Structural Pest Control Regulator for the State of NC Something with a termite (not too cartoony or typical hunting equipment) I work mostly in the city, in, around and UNDER homes with a flashlight, big screwdriver and computer. Current avatar is an actual termite and I just liked the blue swirl (kind of 007ish) Prefer the darker colors and glow of the blue
  13. I have always used the GPS, Granted it's an old 1999 model e-trex with missing rows of pixels, but I use it most of the time. The only time I don't is for some of those urban caches of the lamp post or similar variety. Those I often will just zoom in on the Google map in sat mode and drive right up to the location from memory, reach out and grab. (OK sometimes I actually get out but you get the idea) Few of the ammo cans in the woods or similar have distinct enough terrain or landmarks to find in the same manner. It's about having fun no matter how you actually accomplish it.
  14. As a pest control Regulator for my State (on the other side of the country) Don't do it. You could be in violation of some pest control law in your State and subject to prosecution. As a cacher, Don't do it. They are a necessary part of nature and threatened enough. Place the warning on the cache page as a courtesy and let it go.
  15. Gee... most of the time the hider is not attempting to be that complex and figures that the seeker is at least as smart and in no way smarter so, Just add it to the previous coords ignoring the decimal. Since it clearly does not say to add it to the "hour" portion. 42 28.435 +51 = 42 28.486. At least that is what I typically see used.
  16. Like myself you are also a regular member. To take advantage of the cache page information being loaded onto the palm you will need to upgrade to Premium membership. It's a fair price and well worth it though I have chosen not to take advantage of it as yet. There is some information you could use without the Premium membership if your willing. I occassionaly download selected pages using programs like sunrise, vademecum or avantgo in order to get discriptions but they are all rather cumbersome. You could also create your own personal log of cache finds. Some units will also accept a GPS if you are able to find one. I use a Dell Axim Pocket PC but have not seen the CF gps around recently except on sites like Ebay.
  17. Really.... Just slow down.... 6 days in, found 2, placed 1, emailed twice, made 2 posts and on the warpath. Read the guidlines then read em again. Understand them. Find a better place and start again. You have got to give the other guy a chance. You would want it if yours was assumed to have been washed away from its higherland by a new cacher wanting to stake claim to "your" location.
  18. 6.1 Including 18 caches of my own so I guess a bit farther
  19. I agree with StarBrand. You found it already (maybe it moved a little but you have still found it) Post a note if you re-visit.
  20. I tend to hide the smaller variety of cache including micros but they are not of the small container under a lamp post type. They are considered creative and unique. No film cans with cammo tape here. Many fit in with the environment in which they are hidden and took considerable time time to devise, construct and place. While I like the larger containers I dislike finding just another ammo can under an unatural pile of sticks next to a tree as much as many dislike the LPC's that populate urban areas. I much prefer the artistic concealment whether it be in the woods or along a parkinglot. It's the quality of the hide (both placement and container) that inspires, not the size. (carefull how you read that last line)
  21. While some prefer to find them all to themselves others would welcome the chance meeting of others involved in the same activity. It's just a chance you have to take. I for one enjoy meeting others while on the hunt and have been both the first and last to have arrived at the site. It's rather rare to run into someone while seeking a cache so I say take the chance and enjoy it.
  22. I'm sure there are valid reason's to move a cache such as those discribed above but I have yet to find the need to move any cache container. It may not be where I would have put it or how I would have placed it or at the coords according to my GPSR but I leave them the way I find them. If I have a concern I will send a message to the owner especially if they are new to the game of hiding or it doesn't fit the usual style for the experienced. I think some are just too fast to second guess the owner and re-hide as they see fit.
  23. There is likely some cooralation of finds to hides for most people but then that would involve research I'm not interested in doing. Finding a decent number before hiding is going to give the hider a better idea about the whole process of what is involved in finding it and how / where to place them but Hiding is a completely different beast that will only be learned by experience. I'm not a big fan of the ammo can under some sticks or the lamp post cache but I like being able to pick one up to kill a little time or explore someplace I haven't been. My thing is the container, I enjoy a well crafted, disquised, concealed container that is unique and better yet right under your nose. If all you find are ammo cans then that is what most will copy. If every find is new and unique you say WOW and want to emulate the creativity. There were a few craftsmen in my area and when I started and when I started to hide I wanted to ecourage that aspect and said so in my profile. As a result, those that followed seemed to pick up the challenge and have been prolific with quality hides from the start of their hiding careers.
  24. As owner of the cache you can also add photos that will appear as links at the bottom of the listing rather than in the logs. Just click the add photo on the top right. This however does not put the picture on the page, just a link that will be listed after the discription.
  25. Sure.. did the drilling thing but it too fell apart. Ended up glueing the parts to a plastic tube re-creating the pine cone shape. Not as good as the original but good enough. Don't know about the durability of the cache but assume I will be rebuilding it in a year or so. Would think you need something a bit longer than the micro tube you have or would need to extend it in order to make the proper shape.
