  1. Was doing some reading and came across this one dated 1833. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=LX4113 If anyone live in the NY area and logs this I would be interested in seeing some pictures.
  2. Here is a link to a site that I used a year ago to buy my first digicam: http://www.steves-digicams.com/ This guy seem to be fairly unbiased and also has some sample photos from the different cameras to give you and idea about their capabilities.
  3. If you choose, you can go here http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl and download the archived data sheets by state, then county, and do a search by PID for the descriptions you want. The file, if downloaded in unzipped format will be a .dat file that can be viewed with word or wordpad. BTW, just played with BMGPX and what it does is convert the .dat file to a .gpx file that can be used or opened in expertgps, easygps, etc... This is used instead of downloading waypoints in the .loc format from geocahing.com site One thing you need to do is (when typing in a dos or command box) list the complete path to the .dat file to get it opened, or you can just copy the .dat file to your unzipped BMGPX folder. 4. I like to put in a larger radius because when I'm out and about for work (rural areas) I can load a big slug of waypoints into my gps receiver in one shot. That way whenever I make a stop in a certain area I can sometimes swing by and log a few.
  5. Saw this in a earlier post, not sure if it applies to you or not, but give it a read: TotemLake quote: "Don't boot up your system with the GPS on. Boot up first then turn on your GPS. That should resolve your problem. Unless you have a need for it, you can also turn off the NMEA communication on the GPS as this is what is causing the system to recognize erroneously that there is a mouse on the COM port. The GPS will transmit regardless if there is a program needing it or not when the NMEA mode is on." Thread URL
  6. I have been trying it out for finding benchmarks and when I load a loc file into the program I usually right click a waypoint and select it as active. Then when I get an aerial map the waypoint is usually in the center of the map.
  7. I usually use the descriptions and the GPS. Sometimes I see a witness post, stop with a piece of paper, pencil, and my gps and go see if I can find the mark.
  8. One other thing, I'm not sure what type of Magellan you use, but on my platinum I set the secondary cord to NAD 83 so I could compare both to be sure they were the same (being I'm a newbie).
  9. add this to the end of the url after you have done a search to expand it to 20 miles: &dist=20 BTW, the farthest out I could get it to go is 30 miles. [This message was edited by Ruffian949 on July 07, 2003 at 08:50 PM.]
  10. Here is a link to the magellan web site wher you can down load it: http://www.magellangps.com/assets/softwareupgrades/newprod/mplat_312.zip
