Pat, trilateration is the core algorithm of GPS position location. Everything else is there to make trilateration go or as icing on the cake. Here's the 2-dimensional version of trilateration: Given the coordinates of three points and a distance from each point. Find the coordinates of the fourth point at the specified distances from the first three. Now imagine that the first three points are satellites, and that you're the fourth point. The satellites are there to provide at least three points at known locations that you can measure. The synchronized atomic clocks in the satellites are there to let your receiver at the fourth point measure the distances accurately. The computer in your GPS is there to crunch the numbers and turn them into WGS84 coords. And so on... Thanks, Hawk-eye.
