  1. Most of the stuff I trade is passed on to my 4 year old daughter. Yesterday I found a neon goldfish....she will love diving that out of the deep end of the pool!

Some of the stuff just goes to general use...a putty knife, waterproof pouches, cd's.

I like to leave functional stuff for trade (most recent left items..new white socks, lip balm. face sponges) and would hope they would be used rather than collected.

I leave valid lottery tickets in micos, hope they are not just collected!

  2. Quite a nifty website! In its infancy but has potential if it catches on. It is software you download for you phone, that alerts you to speed traps posted by other users...the more users and post the better it will be. It detects where you are using all sorts of methods (including GPS on your phone) and gives a warning if a trap is nearby. Its free!

I know it is not as comprehensive as the trap alerts in GPS devices (yet), but you don't need a GPS for it to work and it so easy to add a trap.

Take a look if interested

  3. As a cache owner, I just enjoy any log that makes even the slightest effort into recognising that you have tried to achieve something in hiding your cache.

:D Thanks to The Pooks, CnC, Goofster, GlobalRat, Battlerat and Pussycat, The Huskies, Discombob, Capeccr and CapeRat, Hectic, Robin and Family, The X-philes, carlstein, Speedstripe, McBirdie, Tomtwogates, princeOrs...AND OTHERS :D

that have consistently written logs of interest for my caches.

    :D:(:(

  4. If I feel if the cache needs a little maintenance, I will do what it needs. I have replaced torn bags, washed and cleaned caches, add Ziploc bags, put a rubber band around it (if I think it may stop a leak) and remove litter from caches ( only if I really think that NOBODY would want the broken/dirty/useless items).

I basically try to leave the cache "better" than I found it and would love (but not expect) others to do the same for my caches.

  5. That sound like a GR8 idea! What are we talking about, distance wise?

Depends where you are starting, but probably one or two thousand. You could take your time....

I see also that the western cape is far ahead on the number of caches....good to live here!

  6. and are wondering if we may log this cache as a find

This again brings up the issue of what the numbers mean. I am not competing in any way, so don't really care what you do. Having met you and from my experience of your caches and logs, you two have inscrutable geocaching ethics and play the game most admirably. I really think you should just trust what you feel is correct.

  7. Maybe get in contact with other cachers in the same area that might know the cacher.

Thanks for this little tip. I tried it and the friend confirmed that the holder of my TB still had it (and was feeling guilty for keeping it so long). The friend offered to hide it if nothing happens in a week or 2. Hopefully it will get moving again! Thanks Wazat!

  8. Wondering how other cachers out there would handle the following scenario -

First attempt - log a note (because you don't give up that easily)

Second attempt - log a DNF (getting frustrated and give up)

Third attempt - can see the cache but cannot safely retrieve, log another note ! or edit the original note and change the date !

Final and last attempt - log a find. :P:P

After the find do you delete your notes and DNF ?

What do you guys do ?

If I truly looked for the cache and did not find it (no matter what attempt), I would log a DNF. If I am looking for a multi and don't find a stage, I log a DNF. If I really make a very lame attempt to find the cache, I may not log anything, or log a note. I generally don't delete any of my logs.

Ultimately I think DNFs are so good for the game. It helps everyone understand the difficulty of finding the cache (look here). It also alerts the owner to a cahe that may have gone missing. Thats why I log DNFs over posting a note. If I can see the cache, but can't retrieve (eg because of a muggle) I would still log a DNF.

    DNFs do not hurt you......

  9. Hints are (in my mind) the last option, the last chance after you've searched for 10-20min with out success so you make your 100-200km ride home at least with a FIND and not a sad DNF.

I agree withi this. If I place a cache in a remote area, or after a long hike, I give a very detailed clue to make sure you dont have a DNF.

So add that to the list of "Tips":

Give detailed clue if it takes a lot of work to find the cache.

If the cache is accesable (Eg "mouse hunt" by Vespax) and you want it to be really difficult, by all means forgo the clue.

  10. Hi

I am new to using macros. I have successfully used pilotsnipe's macro, and have enjoyed the ease of use and found the tutorial most helpful. I don't really "know' what I am doing but if I follow the instructions things seem to work (very well!!) Is there a tutorial for this macro (a "for dummies" type?). I did try and install the macro, and did successfully update my custom POI's, but do not find the buttons on my nuvi suggested by the graphics at the beginning of the thread:

Can you direct me to a little help?

  12. Thanks for half answering a twopart question:

    1) How many caches in SA?

    2) How many cachers in SA? (That is, how many registered cachers?) Any estimate on "active" cachers in SA? (I don't know how to define "active" but would assume something like active in the last year)
