Charlie "One should never begin a journey by heading in the wrong direction." I like the hike I did yesterday at the Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, just a few miles from me, it reminded me a lot of San Diego. OC is a bit different culturally though, San Diego exists on it own, with a real city and vibrant downtown, OC has no downtown – it’s too much a suburb of LA for my liking. It could be worse – I could be in Detroit !!! SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  2. to buy some N-size batteries for my old HP 28S calculator, when I saw that they are now carrying a bunch of Magellan GPS's (at full price, of course). The guy (kid) there showed me a bundle that they are selling, a serial GPS (no display) packaged with Street Atlas 2003! UGH!!!! Now, here is a product that will not work, right out of the box (at least here in SoCal). Delorme KNOWS the maps are wrong, and that using a GPS with the product to provide driving direction is useless! Yet, there it is, on the shelf, ready to be purchased (and hopefully, promptly returned). This pisses me off – when a company knowingly sells a defective product. Not just a minor bug, but a MAJOR defect that makes it unusable as sold. Yet, visit Delorme’s website – no mention of the problem. In fact, it is featured as the first product on their home page. This product should be pulled from the market. Ahhhh…. I actually feel a little better now….. /rant off/ SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  3. this is a pain... Wherever you go, there you are.

  5. It was, however, sitting in a surveyors tripod, on a hill, with excellent horizons, WAAS on, 10 sats locked on, with both WAAS birds (35 and 47), light breeze, positive thoughts, etc. I have seen it down to 5' before, but that was after I sacrificed 3 old GPS’s and a compass to appease the GPS Gods. Oooommmmmmmmmmm………………. The Venture that thinks it's a Leica SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  6. to Delorme - not only is it missing most of the town I live in (Ladera Ranch, CA), but the datasets are off by ~1000'! When driving with the GPS hooked up to my laptop, SA2003 had me driving through lakes, houses, etc. - it was useless. After calling Delorme's tech support, and e-mailing them screenshots of my GPS track and tracklog, they confirmed that the data on the CD is wrong (at least in SoCal). OK, so can you send me a corrected CD? "Oh, I'll let the people that manage the data know about the problem, but we're not going to fix it in this release." Huh? Sent it back to them for a refund. As consumers, we should not pay for products that do not work. If your mapping program does not have the streets you need to map - what use is it? Send it back. Bought a Thomas Guide for Orange County - it has Ladera Ranch's streets - go figure... a printed map is the most complete map I can get. Plus, the batteries never die! 7. and thought that getting out to do some local caches would be a good way to get to know the area. My Tecnu was still packed away when I first started itching, so I went to the drugstore and got some. Too late! Within days, I was at an Urgent Care in Foothill Ranch with the worst case of poison oak I've ever been blessed with. My left arm was a mess - they wrapped it in antibiotic gauze, gave me a tetanus shot, a steroid shot, and I had them throw in a flu shot while they were at it . I was put on an oral antibiotic and Benadryl as well. I had to change surgical pads every few hours – it was that bad. Next day, my arm and hand swelled up, back to urgent care, and was put on oral steroids as well. Cross contamination got me on my legs as well, and my right foot had a spot about 2” round – I had to throw out a brand new pair of sneakers and the shirt I was wearing because of contamination. I still itch…(scratch, scratch…) Happy New Year! SteveL Pizza party?? Wherever you go, there you are.
  8. I've never had mapping in a GPS, so I can't say that it's a must have. Also, not only is a mapping GPS more expensive, but you also have to buy the mapping software. I guess it depends on what you're going to use it for. I think a GPS topo would be useful for hardcore geocaching/hiking - way out in the sticks/mountains, etc. For geocaching in urban and suburban areas, a Thomas Guide is more useful. BTW, I just sent back a copy of Street Atlas 2003. It did not have the street that I live on (it’s missing most of the town), the street my sister-in-law lives on (been there for years), AND it was useless with a GPS – all the data was shifted NE by about 1000’. After speaking to tech support, it turns out the datasets for Southern California are bad . BTW, my 2003 Thomas Guide DOES have the streets missing from SA 2003. 10. Still there, as far as I can tell. It was part of the inital contents, placed on 9/30/02. Vista Squared Cache SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  11. What caught my attention with the Pro was its accuracy - Pro Review on Joe Mehaffey and Jack Yeazel's GPS Information website. Look at these accuracy plots! It also is a smaller, lighter unit, if I am not mistaken. It looks like a features vs. performance decision. SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.

  14. Reasonable prices ($4.50 for a 50 cal, $3.xx for a 7.62mm), plus they have some odd/large ones there are sell. The last cache I placed used to have detonation cord in it, now it has books! SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  15. I didn't get any response, so nothing has happend yet. I am moving to south Orange County (my house is escrow), so I am unavailable to put this together - perhaps someone else can take the ball and run with it? SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.

  17. They have camera attachments for their phones. I guess I ask why because you can already call and give a "real-time" update of what you are doing at any time with a regular cell phone. I don't, and thankfully nobody calls me to give me updates, let alone pictures, of their recreational activities. I just think this is a solution without a problem. Remember the predictions of the internet enabled kitchen? Toasters and refrigerators with Ethernet ports? I’ve seen, and actually used, an espresso machine with an Ethernet port, but I (and virtually nobody else I know) have not bought one to date. Maybe I just being cynical. 20. us cachers here in San Diego might have to put on a sweater! Burrr! Actually, we have mountains not far from us, such as Palomar (you know, where that big telescope is) that can get several feet, so you can surf and sled in the same day! SteveL Wherever you go, there you are.
  21. Jane8276 sent me an e-mail, suggesting a "pre-meeting" meeting, for our meeting - got that? My house is on the market and I am moving to south OC real soon, so I'm a bit busy to be too involved with the planning, so, time to delegate! The San Diego Geocaching chapter will hold a committee meeting next week – the planned date is Tuesday (22nd) eve. at Islands, or wherever is convenient. Who wants to help?
