  1. Thanks for the responses, everyone. I wasn't trying to be accusatory, just trying to be a responsible cacher. (by posting a NA). BTW, the cache in question is GC2A94B The last email I got from the CO told me to "park on the road and walk in, then you're not trespassing". Huh??
  2. We were caching while traveling recently. When we're caching out of our home area, we usually look for caches that are more than the LPC variety, since there are plenty of those around home! Anyway, we saw one on the pocket query, decided it looked interesting, took off for it. Pulled up to the parking area (the cache itself was in a woods) and there was a very prominent sign: "No trespassing..violators will be prosecuted". Thought maybe we had the wrong place, drove around, found another entrance, which also said "Private--No trespassing". Checked the cache page, no mention of permission, so we opted to not go after the cache. Came home, did our logging, and posted a NA on this one with pictures of the signs. Got an irate note from the CO, who had deleted the logs, and told us he had permission to place the cache there. Sent him a note, asking him to make note of that on the cache page, which he declined to do. Said there are no guidelines that require him to post that he has permission. Had a nice chat with a local reviewer who told me, yes, permission must be granted, however, it does NOT have to be posted on the cache page. This kind of disturbs me. How do we know if permission has been granted if it's not posted? Am I to assume that every cache marked "Private Property" has permission, since it's not required to be posted on the cache page? Thoughts, anyone?
  3. Hey Hoosier Guy! Several of us are making a cache run on Saturday from Indianapolis to Springfield, IL, where we'll dine at The Cozy Dog (home of the original corn dog) and back! It promises to be a great trip!
  4. GC12EAW is a cache based on the idea you've presented, and it's a well done cache...so there is at least one out there. There are a number of unlicensed radio services (MURS, FRS), or, if you have the interest, you could study for your ham radio license and do some REALLY cool stuff with it!
  5. Got a question for y'all. We were planning a CITO in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Geocaching. I contacted the parks department, told them what we wanted to do, and the hoop jumping began. First we found out that Geocachers are "not on the approved list of volunteers". I've never heard of such a list, but, OK. So I asked them what we needed to do to make this happen. That's when the frustration began. A representative of the group has to meet with the parks department to get pre-approval. Then we have to submit a list of people participation for a records check. THEN we have to attend a park board meeting to address any questions or concerns they might have, and THEN we might (or might not) get approved to do a CITO. Geez-o-pete. All we wanted to do was pick up some trash in a park and do a good thing. We ended contacting a neighboring city, who are THRILLED to have us cleaning up their park. In addition to welcoming us with open arms, they're also providing a shelter at no charge (waiving the deposit and rent) so we can have a picnic/event after the CITO. Just curious if anyone else has run into anything like this? Am I being unreasonable by not wanting to do everything they want us to do? I do realize that they're wanting to protect the city from any liability, but, sheesh...we just wanted to pick up trash.
  6. You a member of BMHA? I'm currently putting APRS on my bike and should be out on it in the next week or so.
  7. Hey John! I'm another old grey haired man who is frequently lost. I cache as TheDulcimerGuy and Holly is MandolinGirl. We'd also be glad to help you in any way we can. My email is indyrick@gmail.com, if you'd like to drop me a note I'd be more than happy to give you my phone number and we can chat and set something up.
  8. "Don't waste your breath. Those who don't think the bomb squads are doing their job properly when they respond to caches have no intention of giving up their delusions to reason and/or truth. They are too happy to believe that those brave men and women should take unreasonable risks to protect a few Lock-n-Locks full of McToys." I do want to respond to this. In NO way was a slamming bomb squads. I WAS, however, making a point, and that is, in our 9/11 world, EVERYTHING looks like a bomb, to some. And, there are no easy answers anymore. But, again, in NO way was I showing any disrespect.
  9. Well, you're right of course..there IS no tie in, except for too eager bomb squads. I'll consider myself lashed...probably should've posted this in the off topic forum.

  11. I'm really enjoying this thread. It seems like Geocaching is just like Bacon....everything goes better with it!
  12. What do you mean by "gamers"? Video gamers? not sure where the tie in is there. I'm talking more about board gamers. Indianapolis has a HUGE (or so I'm told) board gaming community. These folks play terribly complicated board, card, and dice games, things I've never heard of. But we have a lot of them that are regular cachers around here!
  13. Howdy, all! I was at the holiday dinner for our Ham Radio club last weekend, and the discussion turned to Geocaching, for several of us who are active hams are also cachers. And then the discussion turned to other hobbies that seem to have a natural connection to Geocaching, and why. I thought this might make a fun and interesting discussion. Ham Radio, of course, because most cachers and hams just can't have enough electronic gadgets. Outdoorsy folks...campers, hikers, cyclists, etc, because, it's just another excuse to get outdoors. Gamers....we seem to have a LOT of serious gamers, at least here in Indiana, who are active cachers, and it stands to reason they're usually the first ones to find a newly published puzzle cache. Thoughts? Oh...and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Fabulous Festivus to everyone!
  14. Rats. I saw the title for this thread and thought it was going to be all about huggin' and kissin' and holdin' hands. Welcome to Geocaching!
  15. Hey All, the Central Indiana Geocachers Email list has been going strong for a couple of years now, and I thought I'd throw it out there for folks who might not know about it. It's a fairly low volume list....although, it can get busy when there's a major event coming up. And, although it's billed as "central", we've got subscribers and posters from pretty well over over the state, and even a couple in surrounding states. Here's a link in case anyone would like to join us. http://groups.google.com/group/central-indiana-geocachers Happy caching, all!
  16. Just to clarify...we went on a group hunt a week and a half ago, and all of us on the hunt agreed that the cache must be in the danger area..unless the coords are off by a couple of hundred feet. Yes, I did post a DNF, contacted the CO, and after no response from him, posted a SBA. I've seen nothing on the SBA after over 10 days, which is why I wondered if I could contact a reviewer directly. I'm not one that takes posting an SBA lightly...I don't do it because I didn't like a cache, or just because I can't find a difficult cache. It's the danger and obvious trespassing on this one that concerns me.
  17. Hello, everyone!! Just a simple question..is it in bad for to contact a reviewer in regards to an issue with a cache? Here's the deal. There's a cache near me that I tried to find on the 13th of November. The original business is being demolished, and it's quite simply, an unsafe area. In addition to general construction debris, there are also "no trespassing" and "hard hat required" signs where the cache was/is hidden. I've contacted the cache owner, to no avail (he appears to be a still active user) I've also posted a "NA" note on the cache page, but haven't seen anything come from that. Normally, I wouldn't worry to much about this, but, at least to me, it's an issue of safety. Any thoughts? Should I contact a reviewer directly, or just let it be and assume that everyone knows they're caching at their own risk? And, another side to this is, we recently had a cache blown up by the bomb squad, and I want to avoid any more bad publicity for geocaching, by someone caching in a no trespassing/hard hat area. Thanks for your advice!!
  18. We do postcrossing, both MandolinGirl and myself. You're right, it's addicting, especially during the cold, icy winter months!
  19. Welcome to the area! I'm only about 10 or so miles south of you. We have a lot a great caching around here. Feel free to drop me a note at IndyRick@gmail.com if you wish. We also have a Central Indiana Geocachers email list you might want to consider subscribing to...and we have a LOT of events around here!
  20. I can view mine also, but I can't download a new one.
  21. Hey y'all, anyone else having problems running a query for caches along a route today? I've been trying to run one for about 4 hours now, but keep getting error messages. I've double checked my steps to be sure I'm doing it correctly, and, yes, I've done this multiple times before. Holy Crap! It's October already! Sorry for the wrong date....Thursday 10/1
