  1. It's time for you GPS gurus to come up with an answer to my "problem". I have been using my MAP76S at work to GPS a number of environmental sites. Yesterday while viewing the topo map on the GPS I noticed that I had 2 waypoints with the same name about 1/2 mile apart. I went to the waypoint list and only 1 of the waypoints shows up. I then downloaded all waypoints to ExpertGPS and only 1 of the waypoints showed up! I then went back to the map screen and there it was, the other waypoint still on the screen. Finally, I took a chance and deleted all my waypoints, and uploaded them again from ExpertGPS. Guess what. The second waypoint still shows up. Any ideas? Thanks..
  2. I was searching the Garmin Website this weekend and found a guide that I had not seen before. Titled "An introduction to using a Garmin GPS with paper maps for land navigation" the 36 page guide has some good information in it. The experianced geocachers/land navigators might not find it very useful however, the less experianced folks just might like it. Check it out.
  3. JJW, How do you get back the old version of NG Topo?
  4. gpsfactor; this was just recently discussed in another thread. Go to "Delorme Topo Regional vs NG Topo", last entry April 16th. I think you will find your answer there. Hope this helps, Dave.
  5. DustyJacket, Thanks...I never thought to check the NGS database! Don't know why, but when I did I was pleasantly surprised to find my listings. It feels good to see your results. Thanks again
  6. I have sent in 4 or 5 recoveries via the NGS Database. 1 about 6 weeks ago, the others about 3-4 months ago and as of today none of them have been registered. Should I re-submit them again or is there someone I can call/e-mail? Thanks
  7. Kerry & Greg, Thanks for your responses. I went to the site supplied by Greg and I am right in the middle of UTM Zone 18S. What is interesting about the GIS program is that it defaults to State Plane coordinates however, an ESRI Instructor gave me the instructions to switch to UTM. When I do, the Easting and Northing coordinates match however, There is not even a Zone 18S listed with the program! Only 18N. Now that I have two programs displaying Zone 18N and the GPSr displaying 18S I guess I will just blow off the zone reading (Since I know its faulty, or something) and concentrate on the coordinates. Again, thanks for your input. Dave.
  8. Here's a question for those of you who are experienced in converting Lat/Lon to UTM and back; I am currently using my GPSr at work with ArcMap GIS. I have converted the GIS program to read UTM as well as my GPSr. Now, when I find a waypoint with my GPSr it lists the UTM coordinates and Zone 18S. The coordinates match the GIS coordinates however, the GIS lists the coordinates as being in Zone 18N. I also have a converter which matches all the coordinates however it also lists them as being in Zone 18S. Why are the Easting and Northing coordinates matching on all 3 readouts but the zone is different? May I have some help here please.
  9. In a past thread, geocachers displayed some of their collectable cache cards, geocaching team logos, etc. I would like to know if anyone is designing their logos, etc. with programs like Printshop, Printartist, etc. or are they all with big expensive programs. Thanks.
  10. Since reading this topic has gotten the creative juices flowing, what is a good program to use to design a button? If I submit an idea I would like it to look halfway decent upfront. What a great job! Thanks.
  11. The name on the top of the case is "Gilsson". There is a website under construction at this name which will be selling GPS Stuff. I think is is GPSGeek's.
  12. While completing my nightly Ebay search last evening a found a new product that GPSGEEK is selling. Available for different models of GPS (Although a Garmin 76 or 76S was pictured) is a neoprene case with a plastic see-through window much like the version available from The GPS Store. Instead of having an open top, it appears the bottom of the case has a zipper closer. Check it out, this might be just what you need to protect your GPS from your next fall. I am a very satisfied multiple-time customer of GPSGEEK products from Ebay so I thought I would pass this on.
  13. O.K. I guess there are too many moving parts for me or I'm too dense to figure this out. All I want to do is change the border around my cache pages (I WAS smart enough to figure out how to fill out a cache page). I have entered the following information in the "short information" section and then the "long information" section with no results: 1. <html><body bgcolor="red"></html> and <html><body background="red"></html> 2. <html><body bgcolor="red"></body></html> and <html><body background="red"></body></html> 3. <body bgcolor="red"></body> and <body background="red"></body> 4. <html><body bgcolor="red"> and <html><body background="red"> 5. <html><body background="Http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/56379_600.jpg"></html> I SAVED MY BACKGROUND AS AN IMAGE ON THE CACHE PAGE. 6. <body background="Http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/56379_600.jpg"> 7. <html><img src="Http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/56379_600.jpg"></html> 8. <img src="Http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/56379_600.jpg"> These are the varients that I have tried and none work. What am I doing wrong!! Thanks, Dave
  14. "And you thought the BLM got pissed for hiding caches on their property! GOD BLESS THE TROOPS!
  15. Although I am probably close enough to some good size towns to get Roads & Rec. I went with Topo. For the most part it has been a good program. Check Ebay before you buy. I got my Topo for around $50.
  16. Eastern North Carolina wants some. Hats off to Magellen from a Garmin user.

  18. After updating to v3.20 the day it was released, my 76S has totally locked up on me 3 times. I have since re-loaded the software/firmware 3 times and MAYBE the 3rd time is a charm as it has not locked up in about 10 days. Having spent close to 3 hours (over the past year or so) on the phone with Garmin for various subjects and NEVER, EVER getting through to a person, I did not bother calling. Good luck
  19. I asked this question in another thread; how do you go about loading the NG Topo CDs so you do not have to keep swapping them. The answer I received took me to the NG website however, there is a file (XX_Doc I think) that I am supposed to use in the process that I can't find anywhere. So what am I doing wrong this time Any takers? Thanks.
  20. What are the steps necessary to change the green border on the cache pages? I can't seem to get that to work. Thanks.
  21. O.K. all you Geo-techs and National Geo Topo experts, I have a question. I love the program except for one BIG problem. I get sick and tired of always having to switch CDs. Is it possible to load everything (all CDs) into the computer so I don't have to swap disks? If so, could you please tell me how to do it could ya pleeeeease thanks. Dave.
  22. Has anyone used the GIS option pack with ExpertGPS? How do you like it? I am considering purchasing this option for use at work. I would appreciate your comments. Thanks.
  23. Scout, one thing I did with my external antenna and 76S was to make a two-piece "Aerial". I took a piece graphite rod used in a small tent and mounted my antenna to one end. I carry this with me when I want to make sure I get a good "lock" and/or track. I extend the antenna, plug it in and go. Yes, sometimes I get hooked on branches but its not that big of a deal. When planting a cache I always use the external antenna for that "extra" accurate reading. Hope this helps.
  24. Well, I consider myself an "active" cacher considering the amount of time I spend on this website and reviewing all my GPS stuff however, I have not logged a cache since July 4, 2002. Due in part to not having many around AND contracting the Big "C" in September. That basically has grounded me until about two weeks ago. Now I hope to get back into the field as my strength returns.
  25. I did the upgrade a couple of weeks ago and lost everything except the maps however, I had saved everything and was prepared. However, since doing the upgrade on my 76S it has now locked up twice since the upgrade; something it never did before. Garmin said to reinstall the upgrade due a glitch during the first upgrade however, one lockup happened before and one lockup happened after I reinstalled the software. I have a question, is there any way to find out if you actually have a 1000 waypoints without loading that many?
