  1. I have nothing but great things to say about my 76S and reception is one of them. I constantly bring in 4 or 5 sats minimum and much more often I usually bring in more. I tested my 76S against our Trimble from work and I am happy to say that during my very un-scientific tests my 76S held coordinates that were within 1 meter of the Trimbles. Considering the const of the Trimble, I am very happy.
  2. fizzymagic, great utility. What would be the possibility of adding State Plane to the converter? That way I can finally convert State Plane to UTM or some other format.
  3. I have had my Dell Axim for about 3 months and love it. The only thing I don't like is the shortage of "Geocaching type programs" for PPC. Everything seems to be made for Palm OS. I currently have GPXview in mine for reading pocket queries and also National Geographic Pocket Topo for North Carolina which is quite nice. I still don't have a sync cable to connect my 76S to the Axim so I am a bit limited however, I hope to have it soon.
  4. floopie, At the moment I don't have any other apps to use with pocket topo. Since I am waiting for my sync cable for my 76S that will link my Dell, AND since it appears that the only GPS programs are for Palm OS PDAs (other than CacheDragon) I don't have much to play with.
  5. Hawk-eye, I am pretty sure it was GPSGeek who was selling those. Like shegget, I have bought 2 antennas from them for my 76S. They work great, they offer fast service and quick response to questions and I think I paid about 19 bucks and change. Good deal!
  6. Has anyone else tried the upgrade for Pocket PCs on the National Geographic Topo website? I have the North Carolina state series and just got an upgrade ($25.00) that will let you install the topo maps on to your PDA (palm OS or PPC). I uploaded 6 custom maps to my Dell Axim X5 and I am quite happy with the results. More info. to follow as I play with it more.
  7. I tried to get one going on here some months ago however, there was no input
  8. I have been using my 76S since April 2002 and absolutely love it. If I had to b#@tch about anything to do with the unit it would be that you can't hold it vertically when using the compass like you supposedly can with some of the magellen GPSs. I also had problems with mine locking up with firmware version 3.20. Since I downloaded V3.30 I have not had any problems at all. Its a great unit. I just wish we could get a "Tricks, Tips, and other things" thread for the 76S going.
  9. I downloaded the newest version for my 76S and MEMAP still works for me.
  10. Tail of Two Cachers, You also might consider going to www.aximsite.com. This is a site just for Dell Axim owners. Then go to the GPS Forum and read on. Good luck!
  11. Mine has not locked up since the newest download version 3.30 I hope that cures my problem and your returned unit is also cured.
  12. Have any of you GPS gurus tried to "trick" your GPS into reading State Plane coordinates? I have the instructions that were written for the Garmin GPS-12 however, it is supposed to work on other units. I can't figure out how to do it and was wondering if any Garmin Map76 or 76S owners have tried it.
  13. Ever since downloading software v3.20 my unit has experianced 4 lockups. It never locked up before this version. I hold in the power button for about 10 seconds and all is well again.
  14. I had a MAP76 until the 76S came out and since April of 02 I have used my 76S at work and play and absolutely love it. The sat lock is constant and I have NEVER lost sats under tree cover. Everyone likes different units for different reasons but IMHO you can't go wrong getting a 76S. I don't know what I will buy to replace this unit when the time comes. It will have to be one heck of a unit. Good luck in your decision.
  15. Does anyone know a a lat/lon, UTM, etc. conversion program that can be downloaded to a PDA? Thanks.
  16. I bought the 76S right after it came out and I am extremely happy with my unit. I will admit that I upgraded from the MAP76 because of the added map space and the electronic compass. I too have not used the compass that much but the 76S is awesome GPS.
  17. I have a 76S and the other day after writing Garmin about adding State Plane coordinates to the GPS they sent me a LONG PROCESS for adding State Plane under the "user defined grid". Although this was written for a Garmin 12XL it is supposed to work in other Garmin GPSs. Do any other Garmin users know of a "fix" to add State Plane to their GPSs? I would list this fix but it is really long. Thanks.
  18. I use Topo in my 76S with no troubles. In fact, a few months ago I brought our Trimble GPS home from work for the weekend and found that my 76S was within half a meter from the coordinates shown on the Trimble. Now Im not knocking Trimble however, the 76S is much easier to operate
  19. What am I missing here? I have a Garmin MAP76S that I think is an awesome GPS. I just bought a Dell Axim PDA to use for storing some Geocaching stuff as well as other stuff however, I am seeing all these forums on Geocaching and other websites about connecting GPS and PDA via a cable. Other than audible routing information what is so cool about connecting these units? Educate me please
  20. How come there is not a program like this for us CE users
  21. Stunod, Thanks for the information. Had I bothered to try pulling down the menu I would have found that. It works great. By the way, is it possible to delete just one or two of the caches from the list?
  22. How do you convert your pocket query to a GPX file so GPXview will read it? Thanks.
  23. I just got a Axim PDA this week and I am looking for any programs that I can use for Geocaching. I have checked out the threads that I could find however, I have not been able to get a single program to open/work on the PDA. Anyone using programs on their pocket PC for caching please pass them along. Thanks.
  24. EraSeek, The ghost is gone! I dumped the map set and re-entered it and the ghost waypoint was gone. I can't figure out what caused that. It was quite weird but its gone now. Thanks..alot!. Dave.
  25. EraSeek, both waypoints are named OWS64 and I am using the generic "dot" for both waypoints. I have looked at this area of the map before I started this project and there were not any waypoints present. What is really weird is that both have different coordinates. I wrote both coordinates down, went on the waypoint list and deleted the waypoint I wanted to keep. I disappeared however, the "ghost" waypoint remained BUT does not show up anywhere. I reentered the waypoint I needed and both are back on the map. I guess its time to e-mail Garmin with this one. The one thing I have not tried is to do a master dump and reload the firmware. I hate doing that so I'm trying everything else first. Thanks.
