  1. When searching for caches I look at past logs. If a one star cache all of a sudden comes up with a lot DNF you can pretty much guess the owner doesn't care about it. Unfortunately yours is not the only area with a lot of caches that need maintenance. I think after a bit people just lose interest and walk away.
  2. Since this is a relatively new device I will be curious as to the response or if you have found a solution. Let me add I am considering the Blackberry or Iphone 4 right now.
  3. Non time sensitive is a poor response in my opinion.
  4. I have a Garmin Vista HCx. There are nicer ones out now that let you load a GPX file that includes the hints etc. No need to haul around reems of paper
  5. I see no problem with the way you logged the cache. You will find a lot of caches not maintained as the owners lose interest after a while. I have learned rather quickly to watch the rating and DNF's on a cache and to ignore the cache altogether.
  6. I often thought it would be nice if there where Geocaching clubs. Haven't found any though.
  7. Just delete the find. Unless they gave good reason for not signing the log.
  8. For some of us old folks it is an actvity.
  9. So this is the quality teaching experience we are providing our students.
  10. The number of caches out there that recieve no care after they are placed. The fact owners completely ignore the fact their cache has gone missing. I suspect there are many that got into this then lost interest and moved on. I now look at logs very carefully before deciding to go after a cache. Too many one stars out there that all of a sudden start to log too many DNF's in a row.
  11. If you desire to keep Bots off fine but to suggest no new user can log a cache without contacting owners is not a good idea. Considering the shape of a lot of caches out there I find it hard to believe they even look at the logs or maintain the cache. There are many Caches around Indianapolis that look like the have not be tended to in a long time. A lot of one star s that all of a sudden are getting DNF and ignored by the owners. So until cache owners can conform to a standard then don't be quick to jump on newbies becasue some idiot uses a bot to play mind games.
  12. The biggest problbem I have with Nanos is due to there size they require the owner to maintain a fresh log. I have seen too many where the log has been full for some time and ignored.
  13. There will always be people opposed to the hobbies and likes of others for some unknown reason. The human animal is the cruelest of all creations on this planet. For every decent person there is an angry self serving individual to counter balance him or her.
  14. A lot of uncalled for sarcarismI see. But the bottom line is if there was not bunch of people out there falsely claiming finds there would be no need for this discussion. This is really simple when you go out take a pen and an pencil. On the other side of the coin there are a lot of caches out there that see no maintanence. Logs are full for months or wet and unsignable. Another simple solution if your not going to maintain the cache please do not place it. I travel a lot so I have not placed a cache. When I get to the point where I stay put I will hide a few.
  15. I thought with out signing the log the cache owner could remove the find? Is that an incorrect assumption on my part?
  16. To answer my own question . Updated to the newest version and all ok now. Problem solved.
  17. Ok I have the Ipod touch app V3.1. I have created a pocket Query off 100 Caches. I connect to my WiFi net work go to pocket queries it finds it I hit down load . It ses downloading but never just sets there saying downloading and never gets the info . I finally quit, tried again same results??? Any suggestions?
  18. I am retired and do this to get me out of the house. Retirement can be a big adjustment. there is no structure to my days now.

    Geocoins

Pretty harsh response to your first post huh? Anyway I don't know that much about Geocoins etc and travel bugs so I don't mess with them. Some of the larger caches have stuff for kids to trade but there is a lot of junk in them. Hope you are able to keep your children interested as it seems like a great family hobby. Few things are able to keep familys out doors and together now days. Happy hunting.
  20. I use my Vista HCx and a ipod touch. Used to use a Palm TX. but things are simpler with the touch.

    Cache Pack

Thanks for the link I bought the bag from Amazon and came today. Great choice.
  22. Wonder what his mom would think of his post? I am pushing 68 can use my GPS and my Palm TX for caching rather well. Recently switched to using my IPOD touch 2gen an geocache app. I also maintain my desk top and lap to rather well also. It's just a matter on being truly interested enough to do it. Don't load everyone in the same pot based on age.
  23. I don't have a problem with repeated questions by people new to Geocaching. I do have a problem with some one lashing out because of repeated questions. If it is frustrating then it would be better not to respond to the post. I also agree the search function on this site sux big time.
  24. I am for the dry log book concept. Also one that really has room left to sign. I have seen many a wet log book also full ones. The real problem is when logs show that it has been a problem that is on going due to total lack of Cache maint.
