  1. I’m looking to set some goals, and thought one that involves finding caches that are rarely found would be fun. The most common definition of a lonely cache is one that hasn’t been found in at least a year, but on project gc “lonely caches” are those with a low find rate. In my opinion this highlights the truly lonely caches, because it looks at the average activity instead of the most recent one. A third way to measure lonely caches is with lonelycache.com which gives points based on find rate. Unfortunately that’s not an option for me since i’m outside the US. How do you define a lonely cache and what goal(s) have you set for this year?
  2. There’s this typical “one stage math multi” near me where the actual sign which is needed to solve it has been removed. This happened many years ago and the CO fixed this by simply adding the final coordinates to the description. Years have passed now and the final coordinates is still in the description. The sign isn’t back. I logged an OAR recently and now the owner has simply logged an OM claiming “everything’s fine” while still giving away the final coordinates. I know it’s not my problem, but it just irritates me that what essentially is a traditional is being listed as a multi. What should I do now? Post a “needs reviewer attention”?
  3. It’s been over 6 months since the favourite point indicator was introduced, and I’m wondering if it had any impact on the way people choose caches. People who spend a lot of time planning their outings may already filter or sort by favourite points in some way, but those that just spontaneously decide to take a cache on a trip might not. Maybe those kind of people takes more high fp caches now when they are highlighted on the map. At the same time, those high fp caches may also be the ones with the most visits. Have you noticed an increase in visitors on your high fp caches and have you started to cache differently because of this feature?
  4. Sorry, maybe I should have given more details. I came to that conclusion because the CO just gave me an screenshot of the correct answers. No indication that he will take a look at the stage. The multi doesn’t get found that often (last log almost two years ago) so it may take some time before someone else will search for it. At the same time I felt like a message and a mention in my Found it log should be enough.
  5. I just completed an 10 km multi in the woods (longest multi i ever found!). At each stage you were supposed to find the answer to a question and you had three to five alternatives. At one stage you were supposed to find a container and find out how big it was. The only problem, I couldn’t find the container. I searched for some time but couldn’t find something at the hint, so I contacted the owner and he gave me the information I needed. I’m going to write the online log now and I am wondering whether or not I should also write an OAR (owner attention required) log too? Even though CO is informed, I’m worried that he won’t check the stage. Writing a OAR log will make it clearer both to the owner and visitors that something my be wrong. Should I do it or is the message enough?
  6. Sent in an new cache some days ago and accidentally dropped a trackable that I didn’t actually put in the cache. I deleted the log but the trackable still shows up on the cache page and isn’t in my inventory. Is my only option to do a “grab it” log? The cache isn’t published yet.
  7. I’m working on creating the images now. How should I send them to you once i’m done? Via this thread? Also, do I need to compress the images? Any max file size?
  8. This might be a earwigo issue, but Wherigo.com is not letting me compile the gwz file from earwigo. I get this error: Server was unable to process request. ---> Exception of type 'System.ApplicationException' was thrown. Do you know what might have gone wrong?
  9. I got it to work! The problem only occurred when exporting it from earwigo. The cartridge looks great from my testing. I will try to change the location and run it in the Wherigo app. Thanks!
  10. I’m trying to test it in webwigo. I get this error: cartridge.lua:585: unexpected symbol near '.' Am I doing something wrong?
  11. So nice that you’re wanting to help! My idea is that when the cartridge starts, a message shows up and explains the concept. After the player answers a question about the start location (to prevent gps spoofing), the game starts. I’m thinking a timer that repeats like every 10 seconds and if the player has moved 15 meters, it checks if you’re closer or further away from the final zone, which will be invisible. A message will pop up to tell the player if it’s hotter or colder. This is something that I would have to try out to see what works best for my location, but having the messages change based on how far away I am would be really cool. Your suggestions like hot, burning hot would work. When the player finally enters the zone, a message will pop up giving an hint for the cache. If you would like to build an open source cartridge or just help me with the LUA code that handles distance, that would be really great. Ps. Even though it might not be what i wanted, making the cartridge available as an “play anywhere” that can be used for multiple caches would be a really great idea. I think both hiders and finders would like something different than the reverse Wherigo!
  12. Does anyone know how to build a hotter or colder game like in this video: I guess I would need to check the distance to a zone from the current location. Is there some LUA code to do that? I’m using earwigo.
  13. One of my caches has the “owner attention requested” attribute, despite no one logging that. Its a little bit annoying because it shows up every time I want to hide a new geocache. Why does it show up? Here’s the cache: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC7RXAJ_krypens-motell
  14. Not sure if this is is specific to earwigo or if I am doing something wrong, but running that code returns this error: cartridge.lua:282: bad argument #1 to 'difftime' (number expected, got string). Are the dates supposed to be numbers?
  15. I’m building an Wherigo where you have to run to a zone before a timer ends. The cartridge works great, the problem is just that the timer pauses when the app closes. Users will be asked to turn off ”auto lock” on their phone, but a cheater could technically turn their phone off or just close the app and walk to the goal in their own pace. My thought was to use the current time to confirm that the timer hasn’t ended, once the user reaches the “goal” zone. After some search i found this page : The cartridge returns the current time when that code is put into the author script, but I haven’t been able to create a variable that does it. Could someone help me? I’m using earwigo.
  16. I will soon be releasing a new travel bug and would like your opinion. I want it to travel to the US and visit the HQ cache and then make its way to San Francisco. My question is: should I write both goals in the description (e.g. Goal 1: visit the HQ cache, Goal 2: travel to San Francisco) or should I just update the goal when the first goal is met?
  17. I’m thinking of hiding a big geocache in a tree with plenty of space for TB:s and a bigger logbook. I already have an idea on how to build it, but I’m wondering how a geocache of that size usually are placed in a tree? When filtering for size large + attribute “requires tree-climbing” the geocache-app returns very few caches and loads caches further away than usual. Many of the caches are letterboxes- to fit the theme of a mailbox perhaps? Have you found or hidden one, and how where it made?
  18. Ok, got it . I guess my argument doesn’t really make sense. Guess I’m trying to say that you shouldn’t try to put as many containers/locations into the same multicache “just because” if they are better split up. But like others have commented so could there be many reasons for doing so. Maybe my goal for 2023 should be to find one of those 20 stage multicaches….
  19. 20 stages? I my area multicaches has like one or two stages, even ”virtual” ones. I have to agree though, there are no reason to make a multicache with 10-20 physical containers if the locations are 161 M apart (unless there is a specific reason). But l dont agree that the reasons for creating a physical multicache are rare. Like I said, multis can have puzzles, or a theme, like you said. For me, an multicache with a creative container is my favourite multi. This is one of my favourites: a 2 stage multi with the theme “surveillance”. Stage 1 is near a lake and the final is at the other side of the lake.
  20. When i started geocaching 7 years ago someone had hidden a favourite point-worthy cache series near where i lived. Thanks to the owner I was able to find my first multi and letterbox. For years I associated multis with fun adventures and physical stages and have since then hidden a few myself. Now years later when looking at nearby multis most of them are “count how many of this and that” type of virtual multicaches, even in the woods. I totally understand their place, I really do, but I don’t understand why multicaches with physical stages are so rare. “Physical” multicaches can have a puzzle or a story and you don’t have to do math to complete them. Much more fun. Any thoughts on this? How popular are “physical” multicaches in your area?
