  1. You attended an event that has since been archived in March, this may have something to do with it. Seems unlikely though. You could try another program: CacheStats is one I use to provide stats in my profile. Make sure you have most recent copy of GSAK. Or get XML Viewer from MindFusion and open GPX file with that to check it out. Good luck
  2. I would like a keyword search that at least could be *limited* by distance. Actually adding "keyword" to the PQ page would allow me to set up a PQ that I could use to search for caches (using PQ preview) by part of the name, and limiting the distance search. As an example I just did a cache called "Grave Cache", if I was trying to find it by name there are 580 caches with "Grave" in them.
  3. By the way, an easy fix for your problem is to get a gmail account and have your GC.com email sent there.
  4. this has been going on for some time now........i dont even get notified when someone finds one of my caches....let alone if i am watching one. no one else has this problem? i dont know what to do because there is noway to turn on a "watch" for a cache i own...its supposed to automatically watch it but its not working.....very very frustrating.... Two things I can think of might be causing this, well three maybe: - You are not checking the email account that you used when signed up at GC.com - Your spam filter is discarding the emails from GC.com - Your ISP thinks GC.com emails are spam and they are not letting them through. Are you getting any emails from GC.com?
  5. What FizzyMagic said. I would add that in order to make sure a puzzle can be solved I like to email my puzzles to someone out of state and have them solve the puzzle. I have been a combination beta-tester/FTF on more than one puzzle cache. This can be maddening if there are typos or other problems in the puzzle. Once somebody double-encrypted using rot-13 and then Playfair (if I recall correctly). The problem was that the encoding wasn't reversible. I had them switch the order of the encoding process and it worked fine. In my opinion all of the necessary info to solve the puzzle should be available when the cache is placed. If you have to add hints later then the puzzle is not properly constructed. One of my favorite puzzle caches of mine is "Each Chord Went Thud" I placed the key to solving the puzzle inside the cache. And yet the cache was found within a few days.
  6. I would just like to add my vote for a big red check mark at the top of the page. I just went through my "todo" bookmark list this way. - Click next cache. - View all logs - Ctl-F for Tharagleb - Ctl-F again for any log of mine - Return to Bookmark list - Delete cache if log found - Goto step 1 It would just make my whole life so much easier if there was a big red check mark on found caches.
  7. If you leave your browser connected to GC.com then the date is the date of the last log you submitted. If you close your browser and come back in the date will default to the current date. I frequently have to change the date to the day before because I am logging for the prior day. The times in the edited logs are probably Pacific Time since that is where the servers are located. Logs themselves do not have a time stamp, just a date stamp.
  8. Slightly OT but whatever happened to King Richard (sp?)... I seem to remember he was good forum fodder at one point.
  9. What I have done in the past: - WAIT: One time there was hot dog vendor chatting with a friend for what seemed like HOURS by the cache, I knew where the cache was but just couldn't get to it. My wife and I took turns faking that we were taking pictures of ourselves, finally the guy left and I quickly got the cache. - FESS UP: I was doing a virtual where you had to find a word written on a bench. This was in a small park trail system, when I got there there was a young couple sitting on the bench having a talk. I went down the trail so I was just out of their sight but kept an eye on them. They kept talking, finally I headed back, explained what geocaching was and asked if I could see the bench. - IGNORE THE MUGGLES: We were doing a cache at the waterfront in Burlington, there were TONS of muggles. So many that nobody cared what we were doing. Just went up and grabbed the cache. - STEALTH: Another little park, older couple sitting on bench near the cache, just wouldn't leave. Put my cell phone to my ear and started a one-way conversation. Walked around absent mindedly. Crouched down into a squatting postition with my head looking away from muggles. Reached down with my other hand and grabbed the cache. - COME BACK LATER: Some times the vibes just aren't right and I give up and try again another day. Best of luck to you!
  10. What about the "Why does my post say..." one, I forget the name but you all know it.
  11. There is a little [Map-It] link on the page where you set up the instant notifications. Right near where you type in the coords. If you change the coords and click the link it still uses the old coords.
  12. This happened to me once before. I believe if you run the "My Finds" query just after posting a find you may not get recent "find" logs in the PQ results. I think this has to do with the way the logs are updated to the database, there is a certain latency. If you wait a couple of hours before kicking off your "My Finds" PQ, after your last log, then you should be okay.
  13. Oh I forgot to add, the hider placed the PIF cache/coin before the HUGE snowstorm we had on the 15th. Even though the coin was only about 10 or 15 feet from a plowed road I had a terrible time getting to it and finding it. One of my caching friends went with me and had to pull me (not my car) out of a snowbank because I got stuck and couldn't move. It was great fun though when we found it!!
  14. I guess I am very lucky, I have both a Geocoin Fairy and a Pay It Forward in my inventory now. Thanks Pay It Forward! Now I have to devise a method to pay it forward. I will probably just create a cache with a few new coins in it.
  15. Uh, no. You haven't given us much to go on. "Some sort of server error" is not very descriptive. Please post the exact error message. I do have a suggestion, try it again with a shorter route. I believe the routes can only be 500 mi long. So try a short route (under 100 miles) and a small width (1 mile) and see if you are still getting the error and go from there. Good luck
  16. I got a nice pair of waterproof boots, which I really wanted after doing a muddy hike the other day. I also got a laptop on Black Friday which I haven't been able to use yet because my wife keeps telling me to wait to Xmas. Which I did, except for installing software & drivers on it etc. My nephew gave me a bunch of teeny-weeny toy soldiers to place in caches. All of you that got a 60CSx are gonna LOVE it!
  17. The Download Waypoints option on a list of caches downloads a .loc file not a .gpx file. The loc file just contains the coordinates, the gpx file has all the good info in it. You can either download a gpx file for an individual cache (there is a link at the top of each cache page), or you can use a PQ, those are the only two ways to get gpx data. Hope this helps.
  18. No, I don't know what you mean. I can think of three reasons why virtual caches might be considered superior to waymarks. 1. Better integration with pocket queries, etc.: Valid point, but this is a promised feature enhancement. I can still visit the waymarks in an area, but I have to download a bunch of .LOC files, 20 at a time, the old fashioned way. 2. "Surprise" factor: With virtuals, you *sometimes* didn't know what you would see when you arrived at the location, and you would then say "wow, I had no idea that was here." Yes, this is a cool feeling when it happens. But it describes a distinct minority of all virtual caches -- in my case, maybe 20 out of the 125 I've visited. The rest were historic markers, covered bridges, statues, etc. where it was pretty clear what you'd be visiting, or they were some mundane object that didn't make me say "wow." I prefer knowing where I'm spending my time traveling to for a visit, and focusing my travels on the items I'm interested in. And for those who miss the surprise factor, there's a "Wow Waymarking" category for that. The small number of qualifying "wow" objects in that category tells me something. 3. You get a smiley for finding a "cache." You forgot the one that really matters. I give up, to what are you referring?
  19. Guess that makes you a *cheater* then, sorry but I'm gonna have to stop associating with you! /tried to log a cache twice once (moved location), but the owner wouldn't let me.
  20. Antother idea, I don't know if it is feasible or not. What about a search by address that only returns a few closest caches (20, 50?) for newbies to use?
  21. Garmin?? Since Magellan makes the Explorist I am not sure you know what you are selling. Check the box.
  22. I didn't read the whole thread yet, but has anybody mentioned drive-by-DNFs, these really tick me off. People who don't even get out of the car and they have the nerve to log a DNF! Do DNFs on archived caches count? What about DNFs when you later found out the cache was not there? To me a DNF must only apply to a cache that actually exists. (I've *had* it with cheaters)
