  1. I recently purchased a GPS off of eBay. I was looking for a basic one for the truck to train new drivers with. I settled on one that was $25. It had all the opti`ons I wanted. I received it today and clicked on Navigation. The following error came up. "The Path is Wrong! Please set again." So I go into Path Settings and select browse to see what happens and I get a blank file list. So my question is what do I do in this situation? There's little information I have on it. It is simply called GPS Navigation system on the box. Google hasn't been much help/ Software version GFR43011010.20090324.V2.0.1 HardWare Version: F4301GBFV_V1.0B Processor: AtlasIII RAM Size:64M Nand Flash Size: 64M It uses Windows CE IS: 200903241122000001 Can I instal maps to an SD card to load? If so what program would be best suited to this unit? Any ideas?
  2. HI. I am looking for a cheap car GPS to use as a driving aid for training new drivers. We have recently lost a few drivers at work and I have to do the training for them in the NE UNited States.A little GPS would help a lot. Maybe a Garmin NUvi or a tomtom (Though I hear the tomtoms aren't all they're cracked up tp be. It basically needs to have a voice alert for the maneuvers and an address book. Pref one that you can name each address. I have a GPS of course but it is a GPSMap 76 and is not useful for road navigation. (Great for the boat and Geocaching though...) I of course will pay for shipping and such. I live in Canada (shipping postal code L2S1E3) but I am frequently down in Kentucky (Shipping zip 40505). If anyone can help me out. I am hoping for something around 40-50 dollars. Thanks Adam scrobo@cogeco.ca
  3. Hey all. I finally found a GPS MAP76 for less than $300 so I bought it up. This GPS is FANTASTIC for almost everything except for the limited memory it has. 8MB for maps is pretty small. I recently got the Mapsource City Navigator 2008 and when I select the maps to install it selects ALL OF ONTARIo and it's 24MB. I only really want the Niagara Region. Does anyone know of a way I can crop out the rest of Ontario then send the map to my Garmin? I love the details of side streets etc but I simply can't fit all that map in my silly little 8MB space.
  4. Does the CSX fit in the mounts for the original map76? I have a the nike mount, a mount in my truck and a mount in my boat for it. Hate to have to try to get them off. dadgum Garmin super sticky mounts!
  5. Hey all! Got the Team C.O.B.R.A. Geocachers website up and running. team-cobra.webs.com Anyone want to drop us a line... maybe cache together.. or you got a good idea for a cache.. give us a shout there. Nice to meet other cachers from the area and abroad!
  6. Well don't worry about the sold GPS. It's not a life or death situation. As for the new one online... I'm interested in ordering it... but 8D... how much would you be interested in letting it go for? If shipping was not a big cost I would consider purchasing it from you. (Paypal or cheque etc...) If you are interested please let me know. Thanks everyone.
  7. I just got my hands on a bunch of movie reel cans. You know... the big round movie reels? some of them have movie titles on them. Gonna make a few movie related caches. I also just got a wooden chest I am going to fill with poker chips with our cache team logo on it. I love the coffin story.
  8. Well it finally happened. My Garmin GPS Map76 was been through so much but today it would not turn on. It's been down the sides of cliffs, under the car, under my but as I fell down rocky overhangs... I guess it just decided to retire I have mounts for my bike, car, boat... extra cables... I spent a lot on these items. So I am looking for another model the same as mine. So... looking for a Garmin GPS Map76 or Map76C Any9one who has one please let me know. Thanks. I've been using my car GPS today to update a few of our caches. It's an Alpine Blackbird II. It's nice to have it talk to me and play MP3s while we cache....but it does the coords in a N43 06' 785" style. And I can't upload waypoint through the website. I miss my Garmin.
  9. We took our boat out up North after a 7 hour drive going to the cottage and hit the lake to head out to a seemingly innocent island so we could place a cache that was not listed yet on GC.com. We blew up the inflatable and threw it overboard, climbed in and rowed out to it, climber onto the rocks... climbed a nasty rocky face to the top to place a cache only to find a film canister that was NOT marked on GC.com with a log in it. Signed log and went down, ammo box in tow. Disappointing I couldn't leave a cache there. Very VERY happy to sign a log book. (F&B Factory if you read this please post something about your cache!) Friend moved up there and went through all this to find the cache. It's gone now... Be prepared for a nice cache in North Bay next summer As for going through hell for a cache, it's worth it. Play-Do or no Play-Do. If I can sign a log I am a happy cacher. But this topic brings up an interesting point. I am planning on using a plastic peanut container that has been washed. Do you think it is a bad idea? Does that count as an inappropriate cache?
  10. Well.. Personally we use the following: Micro: Either the new containers for juicy fruit or excel gum (22 packs) or we hit the dollar store and buy 3 packs of the key-holder magnet containers that you stick a key in and hide under your car. Small: Dean's Milk 1qt bottles. Covered in black paint or camo tape. Regular: Ammo Cans. I love them. but they are expensive sometimes. ($10) So for el-cheapo cache containers hit your dollar store. They have tupperware style containers of all sizes and the key holders make great mag-micros and if you like milk get your parents to buy you 1qt Dean.s bottles. Great seal and wide mouth for rolled up log sheet. I've been looking for an inexpensive "Large" container or aa new cache event we're planning. Pirate style. Gonna make it a treasure chest! Good luck!
  11. For those of you near XSCargo stores... XSCargo has PDAs on sale. Palm I's with 2MB for $14.95 Palm IIIxe's with 8MB for $29.99 and Palm Vs with 8MB for $39.99. Combined with your GPS and the CacheMate/GSAK software these make inexpensive paperless tools. Cachemate is a great program and even better when it is registered. But... I am having problems. I update my cachemate while out with logs and "found it" tags etc. I get home... and can't upload it to GSAK. I'm completely lost. Then I update GSAK manually and type everything in and can;t figure out how to make it update the Geocaching.com website for me. So now I have taken to using cachemate and coming home and just copying it by hand to GC.com But I still preferr it to bringing a binder full of pages. We had 250 caches in a binder with our team stickers etc. Pain in the <--BLEEP-->! Now I have a Palm IIIxe and my Wife has a Palm III upgraded to 8MB and we cache that way. Never go back again!
  12. It seems like I get a different idea of how people feel about this between the 2 forums. On one hand in the Canadian forum people say Go For It. In the General Forums (Where no Canadians have posted) people have mixed reactions from angry to indifferent to insulted. I was out maintaining my "international Caches" today in Indianapolis, IN and FT. Wayne, IN and ran into an elderly fellow who calls himself "poppa-D" and happens to be from Welland, ON (He was coming back from Tennessee.) Amazing that we met this way. He was finding my cache (Team C.O.B.R.A. Series: Travelers #1) and I was going to maintain it and check to make sure it was nice and tight. (It's a tough one. Lots of DNFs and only 2 found it.) And on a side note I found a great spot in Pittsburgh, PA and one in Columbus, OH where no others are around. Can't wait to drop 2 new caches out there! It was his first find ever. He caught the bug visiting family down there and he had to stop in Indy and found a few nearby caches before heading out. He mentioned that if the log was full and he could not sign he would have been disappointed since he is rarely that far from home. He thought it was a good idea too. I'll add temp log sheets and hopefully noone gets upset and if they do I know not to do it for their caches in the future I guess. Ribs... Bacon... Omelettes... Here I come. BOO YAH!
  13. Well I appreciate all the opinions in this thread. I've got some basic ideas now. Of course I am always looking for more opinions cause there is nothing like a good long thread -Temporary cache log is made up. Less mentioning of the person who replaced it. -Will be added to the cache without removing the old log -If old log will not fit wth it we will "cache" the old log nearby with exact coords. (I made up special cache containers just for this purpose now.) -Of course we will note to the owner that maintenance is needed. As for stickering on log sheets, I am sure if it was one or two or three of us then it's fine to just scribble our name down the side. But when we bring all the members out for a group hunt there may be 8 or nine of us. Hence the team sticker to slap on there.
  14. HEAR HEAR! I love their ribs! (Who says ribs is not breakfast?) As for the caches, I have decided to replace full logs and make an attempt at keeping the old log sheet in them or placing it in a cache nearby for the owner to retreive when they get a chance. I am also removing a good portion of the "advertisin" for our group. So folks, if you see a C.O.B.R.A. log in your cache and it offends you I apologize. If it does not then I am glad we could help. But this is why I like ammo cans. Forget a log sheet. You can have a log book. It will probably NEVER fill up.
  15. Agreed. I just felt that if I come across a full log sheet that I can't sign, I hate not signing. (Pride?) Regardless. I've gotten a lot of input from the general Groundspeak section from international cachers including the following: "...let the owner know what you did & all should be ok...i'll NEVER remove a log no mater what the condition..." "Personally, I'd rather someone post that the logbook is full and let me take care of it" "As far as other maintenance, if there is an active owner I wouldn't go much beyond adding a pencil, duct taping a crack, replacing a Ziploc bag and trading out inappropriate items." "Replacing micro log sheets would generally be fine. However the whole shameless self promotion thing would be annoying to me." "I would rather someone do that, then to post in their log that they didn't sign it because it was too full or something. I'd probably be fine with it, and appreciate the help, but then switch out the logsheet when I could." "Now I'm not so sure about taking the old log with you...... I'll have to think a little more on that one...... Nope I wouldn't do, nor want, that." "I can't imagine getting upset at someone for replacing a log sheet for me. It's usually a selfless act that many cachers do every day. Great that you practice this courtesy. I'm not sure all the rest is necessary however. It kinds of feels like that you want to advertise your good deed or the owners lack of attention to their cache by putting your team name on the log." These are all excerpts of course of their original messages. But thought I would share other's inputs. I guess generally I should remove my team logo off of the temp logs and leave blank sheets and contact the owners and tell them... seems to be the general feeling.
  16. I admit. I am a shameless self-promoter when it comes to anything I do. It's my little sin But not for recognition of my good deed. Basically I added all the gobbledy-gook (is that a technical term?) because I DO want to advertise my group. I don't leave any sources of info when I do other maintenance. Maybe I should tone it down a bit? I don't know. That's why I posted this. It was not an intention to draw attention to an owners lack of maintenance. Sometimes you don;t know when a log sheet is running out. I would of course contact them by GC.com but the email address is just in case they come by while we are caching (recently met up with owners Scrath-n-Win this way). But good opinions coming in.....
  17. Met up with Scratch-n-Win at one of their caches. It is Lizzy's vehicle. And I am now returning to my eBay habit. Cool stickers.
  18. I couldn't for the life of me find a better place to post this. So I also posted it in the Geocaching Topics forums Since I am Canadian I wanted a more local response however I value opinions of people from all over the world so I thought that would be a good place as well. We do not do a gigantic amount of caching but get out with our group or individually when we can. I love caching. Both placing and hunting. I carry a container in the back of the truck which is referred to as the CACHE BOX. It contains: -Cache containers (In case we find a good spot or need to maintain ours or someone elses) -Camo tape -Baggies -Log Sheets of all shapes and sizes -Twine -Pens, pencils, markers etc. -Knife and scissors -Team stickers -Muggle cards Well.. you get the picture. Anyways... I have done some basic maintenance on some people's caches. New pencils, baggies, camo, etc. I'm sure these are all appreciated and acceptable in mostly everyone's eyes. I only use quality materials and believe that good will spent comes back three fold. Recently I have come across a rash of micro containers with no space to sign the sheet or just enough to leave a Team C.O.B.R.A. sticker. (Basic labels with 30 per sheet). I've made up a "temporary log sheet" for these containers. Basic idea? <<It has our logo and states at the head of the sheet>> This temporary log sheet has been placed here by: Team C.O.B.R.A. Geocachers:Niagara Division Until the owner has a chance to change sheets. www.cobraops.com <<Then below it:>> Cache Name: Cache Owner: Log Sheet Placed: By C.O.B.R.A. Member: <<Then below THAT:>> If you are the owner of this cache and your log sheet is no longer here that means we could not fit both sheets in the cache container. We have your log sheet and will ensure it is delivered to you safely for your records. Please contact us at finances@cobraops.com Now. Is there anyone who feels this is not acceptable behavior when maintaining a cache? I thought I would get some opinions on this and basic maintenance of others caches before putting these things in our truck. Keeping log sheets is essential to cache owners. I know this. There are many ways to get the logs back to the owner such as personal delivery or the mail system. And it gives a chance to cachers to meet each other. Is there any other opinions on this people wish to share? I really don;t want to "step on any owners toes" or anything. I thought this would just be a friendly way to help out other cache owners. Thoughts?

  20. I downloaded your program. Can;t wait to install it. Looks very very interesting. Your PDA avoidance is a good idea. I have a Palm III and it just stopped working today. I managed to find a Palm IIIxe NIB with a 2 year warranty today for $40. So off I went to the store again I should not have bought used to begin with I suppose. It only lasted a few weeks. Can;t wait to try your program though!
  21. I have a Garmin GPSMap76C and I use a Palm III Great combination for paperless caching. I use cachemate and GSAK. Cachemate is a great program and there are lots of ways to register it on the net. GSAK is great even as shareware. I love paperless caching. And by spending the $$$ on a premium membership on GEOCACHING.COM is great because it helps support the site and the company!
  22. If you are every going to be down in St. Catharines or the surrounding area then let Team C.O.B.R.A. know! My email address is stormshadow@cobraops.com and we'd love to have someone new come out and join us. We both place and search for caches and it's always nice to meet another cacher.
  23. With the limited room it lok slike we won't be in on it. I will have lunch at Kapps that day though. Just to see if I can find the Red Aztech. I'll leave a Team C.O.B.R.A. card under the wiper. BTW BQ love the Monopoly Series!
  24. Was at the local STAPLES BUISNESS DEPOT on BUNTING RD. As I was leaving I noticed a red Pontiac Aztech in the parking lot. GPS and GEOCACHING stickers on it. Anyone on here own it? I have to ask you about the red decals on your side windows! I have the geocaching.com symbol and website on my Jimmy but your satellite decals rock. Contact me if you want.
  25. Team C.O.B.R.A. Geocachers is expanding. In 30 days we will have our North Bay Division up and running placing caches in the area. We are going to try to offer some unique experiences in Northern Ontario such as island caches, sunken caches and some deep woods terrain caches. Thanks to Dave Roscoe for heading up and finding a great interest in our sport. It will take some time to get him situated in his new home and job. But rest assured our North Bay Division will offer caches for you Northerners.
