  1. I've been using an Etrex H for the last couple of years and I have been putting the coordinates in by hand. I've been considering buying a lead so that I can download the coordinates. My questions are:

Am I right in guessing it will just be the coordinates that get downloaded onto this particular unit or do clues and other info also get downloaded?

    Nope, just the coordinates.

Do you have to manually input names/numbers for the downloaded coordinates or are they named/numbered from the download?

Depends on the tool you use to download them - the Garmin plugin for GC.com gives each waypoint a number based on the cache id, GSAK (by default) gives each waypoint a name derived from the cache name.

I'm running Windows 7 (which by the way was MY idea) - Would a serial converter lead need to have software to support it?

I use a standard serial cable (no usb convertor - they were too much hassle) on Windows 7 and it works just fine.

Finally, is it easy enough to transfer data or should I just stick with the old thumbs?

Thanks for any advice for which I think is probably a reoccurring question

It is easy enuough once set up - certianly a lot quicker than putting them in by hand!

  2. Thanks for your replies.

She's already got the Interest section covered.

She's spoken to her coordinator, but he hasn't given her a final decision yet.

    We'll wait and see.

If her coordinator is unsure, get them to speak to their local field officer - they should be able to advise, or will have access to someone who can.

  3. SE2012? I think the SE are going to be well overdue a Mega by 2012.

Obviously I'd like to have one on our doorstep, but as I'm not prepared to stand up and organise it, I say Good Luck to who ever is prepared .... and they are quite entitled to host it in their own back yard :P

If there was one in Central London would I go? Maybe, but probably not - the cost of getting there would be prohibative for starters.

  4. When viewing a thread I am getting the OP's post and then I am getting a list of 'Posts in this topic' See pics below for example.

Which means to read the topic I have to click on each and every link to each individual post. It has been like this all day for me, and as I can't see a thread already about it I am wondering if my forum settings have gone a bit astray??

Under 'Options' (Top right of a post), change the 'Display Mode' setting back to 'Standard'.

    HTH.

  5. There is a reviewers queue, which we are working through at the moment. We have a bit of catching up to do as it is holiday season and we had a mega event to attend.

Hopefully the ones in front of you have followed the guidelines and wont need much reviewer effort so we can get to yours as quickly as possible.

Yep, fully appreciate that, hence my comment:

must be patient, must be patient

    :D

  6. We are a pair of rookies at geocaching that have just reached our first 100 (no applause needed, just send champagne)

    Congratulations :D

Is it possible, that some folks simply refuse to register their DNFs, and if so, why?

    Pride?! Only kidding themselves

We always post our DNFs, but we do find it extremely unhelpful when other cachers refuse to do same.

Failure to post DNFs allows the cache to assume a false degree of difficulty. Can that be helpful? I think not.

C,mon folks, an admission of failure is not exactly a blot in the exercise book.

Are there others that feel like us?

I log most of my DNFs. If I've not had a decent look around and intend to return I don't log it, likewise if I decide I wasn't looking in the right place - no point putting others off visiting if I didn't look hard enough.

As a cache owner I find DNFs helpful - I can go and check up to see if they are indeed missing. As a cache finder I find DNfs helpful as I can avoid hunting for caches have had a number of recent DNFs and so are probably missing.

It's not just DNFs people don't log - when I checked on one of my caches recently (following a DNF) I found it had been subsequently found but no online log had been made. Each to their own I suppose :)

  7. it would be useful for planning purposes to be able to convert N/W Bearings of cache locations to UK Grid Locations as in Ordnance Survey maps. Is there an easy process for doing this either on the GPS or by software - or any other way?

The cache pages show the OS references, in the light blue box near the top of the page. There is also a GSAK macro which can do it if you use that programme.

I can do the conversion on my gps (eTrex h), but it is a bit painful to switch between WGS84 and British Grid.

  8. Hi all,

How about trying to find the Red Sands Fort cache (GC1DVNY).

It's located 8.5 miles north of Whitstable. Yes, in the middle of the Thames Estuary.

It has only had one 'Found it' log since it was placed on 6 July 2008.

    Good luck

    LostInTheWoods!

I was hoping to request a slightly cheeky found it on that one today :D

Went out on BayBlast from Herne Bay this morning, but we only visited Shivering Sands and Knock John, not Red Sands :D

Still, excellent trip through the wind farm, forts and on to watch some seals, so can't complain I suppose :D

The cache will have to stay as one of my nearest unfound :D

  9. OK, I've got GSAK generating some pretty stats for me. The question I haven't seen answered anywhere is: do you have to manually re-run that (i.e. get the PQ, import it into GSAK, run the Stats macro, export that into your GC profile) every time you want to update your stats? Seems like an awful hassle - is there no way of getting some sort of automated stats? :drama:

    Ian

    Short answer.

    Yes.

    But.

There is an Auto feature to add it to your profile...

    (Sure someone else knows where!)

As far as I know it is a manual button click on gc.com to generate the 'My Finds' PQ. I then copy the zip file from the email on to my desktop and manually load the PQ in to my GSAK database. Then I run the GenUploadStats macro to generate the stats and automatically upload them to my profile.
