  1. Oh, man. I desperately need a new pack. This one below used to be my carry-on-the-plane-in-case-checked-bags-get-lost bag ... now it's got half of the local swamps all over it, so it's not so great for that purpose anymore. Plus it won't hold all my caching gear and is a bit lightweight in terms of its construction. Etc, etc, etc. Happily, my birthday is coming up. I think I have a solid argument for an awesome pack! 2. I need a new caching pack ... my current pack is getting much too small and my expeditions are starting to get longer time/dx-wise, deeper into swamps and forests, wetter, etc. New bag needs to be waterproof, sturdy, light, etc. So, what do y'all recommend? StumpWater Condolences to OP on the lost bag
  3. I feel a long stretch in the gulag is warranted. Maybe the one at N 65 21.444, E 131 34.697. Scoop: I'll be placing a cache there soon! StumpWater
  4. The Northernmost cache out there (purportedly): http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=22531 StumpWater
  5. Another positive vote. Sounds very nice, very interesting. StumpWater
  6. Seven. That was plenty (given where the caches were, etc.). I could imagine doing more, but not often. StumpWater
  7. I have a few caches out there and have always wondered what would make me delete someone's log. I think I know now! StumpWater
  8. I have a micro-sized peanut butter jar that I'm going to attach to a live wire in a lamp post in a residents-only park. You'll find it easily, it the third lamp post after the "No Tresspassing" sign. I'll post the link after it's approved. StumpWater
  9. I'm based in NC. I thought I'd pick a state somewhere far from here --- I dunno, Oregon maybe? --- and release "Igor's Delivery Service" here in NC for a drop off in Oregon of whatever he manages to gather along the way. Seems bettter to pick a state than a specific cache. More doable. I could let the delivering cacher in Oregon pick a new destination for him ... back to NC maybe? ... off to Vermont? Wherever, the delivering cacher would chooose and I could update Igor's Mission Statement. Igor would then start off with a once-again-empty Quick Link, headed off to a new destination. It's probably better jjust to send him off with a destination, then let things take their course (as opposed to trying to bring him back to NC). Thanks for the input. StumpWater
  10. I'm considering releasing a TB called "Igor's Delivery Service" OR "Igor the Collector". (Maybe not "Igor", but something. Maybe "Linkenstein". Whatever. I'd choose the name based on some small figure that I'd attach at the start.) I'd attach a longish "Quick Link" (see image below) and request that finders/movers add something small/interesting to the quick link before moving Igor on to the next cache. Obviously, only something attache-able. Adding something wouldn't be a requirement, just a request. In Igor's Mission, I would either request that (1) Igor proceed from cache-of-origin to a particular destination cache where his load, accumulated along the way, would be delivered as a "SWAG replenishment" OR (2) when Igor began to seem full, somewhere out on his wanderings, he be redirected toward his cache-of-origin. I'm leaning toward (1), the "Igor's Delivery Service" option. I might even do both and see how they go ... Think either of these would work? Issues? Ideas? Has this been done a bazillion times? Thanks, StumpWater EDITED TO CORRECT THAT I'M ACTUALLY LEANING TOWARD OPTION 1.
  11. Yep, thanks. It's the "AND" condition on "FOUND" and "OWN" that's the issue. The other things aren't doing it. Thanks! StumpWater PS: Like I said, "Newbie Alert"!
  12. OK, PQ Newbie Alert. Be kind. Or not kind, but help me out. I ran a PQ yesterday and it worked. Today, nada. I'm not being overly restrictive in my conditions. I'm doing a PQ for my stats page: 500 CACHES, ANY TYPE, ANY CONTAINER, I HAVE FOUND, I OWN, WITHIN 900 MILES of my HOME COORDS. Not checking any ATTRIBUTES, not using any PLACED DURING. I'm not checking "TERRAIN IS" or "DIFFICULTY IS" ... should I check those? What's up? StumpWater
  13. Would be cool to see your Power point. Can you makke it available? Thanks, StumpWater
  14. Bingo. And, though I'm sure it won't be, that should be the end of the discussion. StumpWater
  15. Thanks for the guidance. I've started playing around with some of these. My profile page has the "not about the numbers" output in it now. I'm starting to work with GSAK. Not as immediate or user-friendly, but the output seems richer and better formatted (based on what I've seen from other user profiles). StumpWater
  16. Here's a pic from my youngest daughter's first find of a micro ... in the woods. She was so proud! (Lest some wag ask, that's my daughter's doll "Betsy", not my daughter.) StumpWater
  17. What are the steps to getting a nice presentation of my (admittedly minimal) caching stats on my profile page? I understand there is some software to be downloaded, etc. ... where do I begin? Apologies for the fairly boring topic, but this seems like the right place to come for help. Thanks, StumpWater
  18. How did this part of caching get started? Anyone on here know stories from the early travelers? What was the first traveling object? First TB? StumpWater
  19. Done. I have kids below the lowest age group and they have accounts and log finds (sometimes). Shame they can't be counted. StumpWater
  20. Boy, I'm sure some of you folks are gonna hammer the newbie on this, but (I ask respectfully) ... why on Earth is that a reasonable rule of thumb? If there is, in fact, a reason ... please educate me. But I just don't see it. I am beginning to think that the underlying question driving this disagreement is: Is geocaching about finding, or trading? If you believe it's about trading, then I can easily see where micros would bug you. For me --- and, I believe, many others --- it's more about finding. Happy caching, StumpWater
  21. Alright, I was going to start a "Geocaching History Questions" thread, but I think this one beat me to it. Maybe the OP could even change the title ... ? My question was: What/when was the first travel bug? StumpWater
  22. CONTRARIAN OPINION ALERT! I love forest micros. I love to hunt 'em and they're nearly the only type I hide. Of course everyone has their own preferences and can express them, but I think lumping them all together is a bit unfair. I'm all about the location, the hike, the nature, the time spent outside (not at my desk!), making hopefully-clver little containers, etc. Forest micros can be fun, challenging-but-not-impossible, creative hides. To each their own, right? Happy caching, StumpWater
  23. Not to make light of this interesting discussion, but I guess the following is too much for most people's budget:
