  1. ANY longitude would be fine. The key for the waymark is the N 40 17.397 latitude, so any longitude that intersects with that latitude would work. Thanks so much for the help! Duane Odyssey Posse
  2. Daniel Oliveira suggested I post my request here. If someone could translate it for me, I would greatly appreciate it! My name is Duane Bolin, and my Geocaching username is Odyssey Posse. Here is a link to my Geocaching profile: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=29...c2-a1e7f4ed9836 I am writing to ask if you would help me obtain a personal waymark based upon my username. Here is a link to the Waymarking category called "Where's In A Name?": http://www.Waymarking.com/cat/details.aspx...3f&exp=True That page explains what it is I am trying to do. My username (Odyssey Posse) converts numerically to the following North latitude line: N 40 17.397. What I need someone in Portugal to do is the following: Take a photo of your GPSr (with the coords clearly visible) at ANY coord. (choice is yours) that intersects with N 40 17.397. For example, it could be taken at the intersection of N 40 17.397 and ANY longitude. A photo of the surrounding area would be great as well! Then, just email me the photos with any details you want to share about the area. If this sounds like something you could help me with, let me know! Thanks for your help! Duane Bolin Odyssey Posse P.S. My son, Seth, is an 11-year-old futbol (yes, we call it "soccer" here in the U.S.) player, and he idolizes Cristiano Ronaldo. He once wrote a school paper about his dream of playing for the Portuguese National Team. It broke my heart to explain to him how his U.S. citizenship would likely impede that dream. :-)
  3. I bought my 60CSX a couple of years ago, so I don't know if things have changed or not. However, when I purchased mine, the preloaded maps were very basic, with very little street detail. I bought the City Navigator map DVD and loaded it on, and it has worked perfectly for driving, turn-by-turn directions, and, of course, Geocaching!
  4. UPDATE: STILL only receiving daily email digest for hiking/backpacking, but NOTHING from any of the other 7 or 8 forums I'm supposed to be getting daily email digests for (and, yes, there are new posts in each of them each day). What's up with this?
  5. Third or fourth day in a row now . . . only daily email digest I've received is for the hiking/backpacking forum. I'm still getting nothing from the other forums. Any word on this?????
  6. In order better to keep track of all that's going on in these forums, I have subscribed to several specific forums. At first, I tried the "daily email digest," but noticed after a few days that I was receiving no daily email digests (and, no, they weren't going to a SPAM/junk mail folder). I then switched all the subscriptions to "instant notification," but I quickly grew tired of the emails that inundated my BlackBerry. SO, I switched most of them back to a "daily email digest," but since then, I've only received daily digests for the hiking/backpacking forum. And once, yesterday, I received the daily email digest for that forum twice. What's up with this? Has this been reported before? Is there a known bug? Is it being worked on? Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Some people add their pictures to the cache page as images and then to them once they're uploaded. I find it easier to use this simple HTML code: <center><img src= "URL"><br> I upload my pics to my Flickr page, which will give me a URL that I can simply insert into the code above (in place of URL between the quotation marks) and, voila, pics on my cache page! You can look up the caches I've hidden via my profile. The EarthCaches and Indiana Spirit Quest caches, in particular, have quite a few photos. Hope that helps! Duane
  8. If you want something a little cheaper and a little less deluxe, I've used this Energizer model with great success. It comes with 4 rechargeable AA batteries and it recharges them in only 15 minutes. On a full charge, I get two to three days' full use on my Garmin 60CSX. The link is to an Amazon page, but I've seen it cheaper at Wal Mart and on eBay. I think I only paid $20 or so for mine. http://www.amazon.com/Energizer%C2%AE-CH15...s/dp/B000087BDN
  9. Hmmm . . . I can't imagine you'd be able to access realtime info from the gc.com site without some kind of plan with internet access. When I first got my BlackBerry, I was told (by an AT&T rep) that I had to pay the $10/mo. for the AT&T navigational pkg. to be able to access the GPS chip with any other app. This is NOT true. I have never paid for any type of navigational feature, but the Trimble app accesses my GPS chip just fine. FWIW, the Trimble app is OUTSTANDING. I use it exclusively to cache paperlessly. In fact, the guidance is so good that I often use just my phone and don't even bother turning the GPSr on (unless it's a deep woods cache that requires extra precision).
  10. Hey everyone! I'm going to be in Denver next week on business for a couple of days. My wife has already been out here and picked up a couple of Colorado caches, including one of the EarthCaches downtown. I'll probably only have a limited amount of time one or two evenings. I'll mainly be in the Littleton/Highlands Ranch/Parker area. But I will have a rental car, so that's good. I'm not going to have much time to research caches in the area, so I'm asking all you locals or others who've cached in the area: what should I hit? If you could recommend some great, "can't be missed" caches in the area, what are they? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! Duane Bolin Odyssey Posse
  11. Thanks for the replies. I've posted this on the hgcs site now, too. I'll be flying through IAH, by the way.
  12. I'll be flying to Denver on business soon, and I'll have a 2-hour layover in Houston. Now, I know 2 hours isn't much time, but I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the feasibility of grabbing a Texas cache in that timeframe. Is there a relatively-easy cache to find that can be reached quickly via public transportation or a short cab ride? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
  13. We absolutely love our FJ Cruiser. It got us to an off-roach cache in fine shape earlier this week!
  14. Thanks for the heads up on this solution! I tried and it works for me as a "back up" solution. It's not nearly as elegant as CacheMate. The ebook file is much harder to navigate, but it does have all the info. there in a pinch. I sent an email to the guys at CacheMate re: a BlackBerry version and only got a simple "no" in reply, so I don't know if they're considering one or not. I sure hope so, but the lack of customer service as expressed in their email to me does not give me much hope. Oh well . . . Hopefully Geocache Navigator and the gc.com WAP site will serve me well most of the time! Thanks again for the replies!
  15. Hey all - I just got a new BlackBerry Curve and love it. I'm getting ready to go out and check the Geocache Navigator in a sec. One thought I had, though, is: what do I do in an area without Internet/cell service? I've used CacheMate with my Palm T/X for a while now, but I'd like to reduce the number of things I'm lugging around with me. From what I've been able to gather online, it doesn't appear there's a version of CacheMate for the BlackBerry yet. So what can I do? Since gc.com stopped doing the Mobipocket ebook files, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to get cache info. (descriptions, hints, etc.) onto my BlackBerry such that I could use it offline if necessary. Is there some other type of export I could do from GSAK that would be viewable on my BlackBerry via some other type of application? Any and all thoughts are appreciated!
  16. I've been doing a little more research and believe that I would like to stick with my current carrier: Cingular/AT&T. I know that AT&T is not a Geocache Navigator compatible carrier, but I thought I saw that they had a version available now that would work with the newer Blackberry Curve on AT&T. Is that accurate? But is a Blackberry what I want? Smartphone comparisons online treat the Blackberries differently than other smartphones, as if they're inferior somehow. I will want to sync with my Outlook contacts, Hotmail, etc. Will the Blackberry do that? Or do I need something with the Palm OS or Windows Mobile 6? Sorry for all the questions, but this is all so confusing!
  17. I've done some searches and read through several long threads about using cellphones to geocache, but I'm still as confused as ever. I suppose it's in large part due to the fact that I'm using an older Razr and I haven't a clue about the newer "smart" phones, Blackberries, etc. A cousin of mine was showing me his web-enabled phone over Christmas. He was pulling up his email, websites, etc. It got me to thinking that, with such a phone, I could check my hotmail to see if there are any emails about new caches. More importantly, on a FTF run in a city an hour away, I could check for emails from finds that have been logged already. Could I also post a log to the gc.com site from the field right after a find? I know the gc.com site has a lot of data, especially on the cache pages, so I wasn't sure how easy/hard or fast/slow it might be to try to navigate and use those pages via a browser on a cellphone. Any input here would be greatly appreciated! I've also seen a lot of posts about using Geocache Navigator. Is it all it's cracked up to be? I guess, bottom line, I'd like to have a cell phone that would allow me to get a notification of a new cache being published and then I could use either the phone or my GPSr to get there for the find. I'd also like to be able to check email for found logs, etc. on new caches that I've put a watch on. I'd also like to be able to pull up cache information in the field if I find myself in an unfamiliar/unexpected area. So what's the best way to get that ability? Is there something out there I'm not aware of? And what's the cost? Both in terms of new hardware (phone), software (apps), and usage fees (cellphone data plans, etc.). Sorry to be so longwinded, but this is very confusing to me. Hopefully this thread might evolve into one that will benefit others with similar questions in the future. Thanks in advance for all your help!
  18. Thanks for your reply, Chip. I have to tell you . . . your presence here on these boards is an indicator to me of the great reputation DeLorme has for fantastic customer service, and it's making me lean strongly in the direction of giving the PN-20 a try. If I do, I'll drop you a line for those pointers!
  19. Check out our XMap software. This product will allow you to register any scanned map or downloaded digital image and view it in the desktop software as well as save it for use with the Earthmate GPS PN-20. While Topo USA is just for... well, the USA... XMap will allow you to use the GPS with raster data anywhere in the world. Fire me an e-mail if you'd like more information. Here's the link to XMap. It's a professional product and has a lot of advanced features but there is a very nice upgrade price for people who have purchased the Earthmate with Topo USA... $99 for the professional version! So check out the Earthmate and PN-20 at our geocaching page: www.delorme.com/geocaching Then consider the XMap product at our professional site: www.delorme.com/xmap/pn20 The geocaching.com step could save you $250! NOTE: This low price is based on the Geocaching.com holiday special and won't last forever! So $399.95 will get you two point image registration and ability to load all the free imagery that's available through most stage GIS agencies. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions... Chip Noble Team DeLorme Thanks for the info., Chip. I looked online, but did not see any bundled pricing or upgrade pricing. Is this a situation where one would need to buy the PN-20 via the Geocaching page link and then later upgrade to the Xmap s/w via some other method?
  20. Here is a screen shot of the waypoint page. It should hold 256 characters and though you can only see 2 lines at a time, you just use the arrow keypad to scroll up and down to see all the text. Having this open up on a separate page would be very cool (Chip?) . The PN-20 will hold 1000 waypoints. When you bring up the Find page, you can search for caches Near Map Center or start typing in a name. And the Goto is actually a route on the PN-20. Chose your cache and route to it. So far I have been able to go completely paper free! I'm still torn. You certainly can't beat the price right now. Can one ever have too many GPSrs? Maybe I'll order and rely on the 30 day MBG to return it if it doesn't pan out. One final question about its use for geocaching: how does the find feature work with regard to the "near map center" function? On my 60CSX, I'm used to finding the nearest geocache to my current position. Is the "near map center" function the same thing? I.e., is my current position always at the center of the map?
  21. Thanks so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. This is exactly the kind of info. I was wanting. I have a bonus gift card from work that I can spend on little ol' me and was wondering whether it was worth it to buy this Delorme unit at the special sale price. For me, it would really only be worth it if it would replace the 60CSX in paperless caching the way I'm used to, but it doesn't sound like it's quite up to that task yet. Maybe someone will create a GPSr specifically with paperless geocaching in mind somewhere down the road. Thanks again!
  22. Hey everyone! The Groundspeak weekly email contained a link to Delorme's site, which is advertising a sweet deal on this unit. Here's the link: http://www.delorme.com/geocaching/ My question is this (or these): I currently have a Garmin 60CSX and I've been very happy with it. I paperless cache with a Palm T/X and GSAK. When I saw the Delorme link above, it intrigued me, as it would be nice to be able to paperless cache with all the info. in just my GPSr, rather than in two devices (with two sets of batteries, and two sets of downloads, etc. etc.). I understand that I would need to download all of the cache info. in the Topo software and then transfer it to the GPSr. But how much will it hold? And how does it display on the screen? Is it like looking at a cache page? Or something else? And, most importantly, how would paperless caching with the Delorme unit compare to my current set-up with the Garmin and my Palm. Right now, I have 500-1000 caches loaded into my Garmin 60CSX and my Palm T/X. When I find myself in an area with time to cache, I turn on the Garmin, hit "find/geocache/nearest" and a list of the nearest caches pops up. I select one and choose "go to/follow road/faster time" and it will give me turn-by-turn street directions to get to the cache. When I've hit the end of the road, I go through the find menu again and choose "off road" and follow the compass to the cache (then I just look up the details in my Palm T/X if I need a hint or other info). I do have the Garmin Mapsource street-level data loaded onto a 1GB card in my GPSr. How would the Delorme unit compare in this regard? Is there street-level mapping data loaded onto the unit already? Available in the software to transfer to the unit? How much will it hold? I've got the entire continental US street-level detail on a 1GB memory card in my Garmin. Will it automatically do turn by turn navigation to a cache the same way my Garmin does? I've read that there's no compass, but does it at least give you a bearing? I'd love to do paperless caching with only one device, but some of the things I've read have made me wonder whether it would be as user friendly and useful as my Garmin. Can anyone shed any light on the specific geocaching aspects of the unit? Thanks! Duane Bolin infarmfamily
  23. Answering my own question . . . Word on the street is that the next venue will hopefully be the Cranbrook Institute in Fall 2008. According to quick Googling, I believe the Cranbrook Institute of Science is in Bloomfield Hills, MI, just outside Detroit.

  25. We got into geocaching just before the GPS Adventures Exhibit closed down. Unfortunately, we were unable to make it up to Muncie before it closed down. I have tried a couple of different emails through the GPS Adventures site, with no response. Can anyone tell me if this exhibit is moving to a new location and, if so, where it will be? (And when it will be?) ANY information is appreciated. Thanks!
