  1. This is a just a quick question (which may have come up before, but I couldn't find it in a search), and maybe the powers that be, or someone who knows can quench my thirst for useless facts, but..... How many GPX's are processed on a daily basis by the servers? Whats the average processing time for a GPX? Edited:[had another question to ask]
  2. That is probably more my point about a Markwell. Some subjects should just be killed. What would we do if threads only had a limited lifetime, and were permanently removed (archived), like some other forums. After all, disk space is finite.... As I said above, I have never even looked at the glossary, which is a fault I admit. Someone may have a question about going paperless, which is more relevant today than it was 6 months ago, because someone has built a better widget (I'm not trying to use the PDA example to pick on)... I myself have written my own application that produces all the outputs I need for a day of caching (and I'm not tooting my own horn here), but someday, someone may ask something about this very type of thing, that I might be able to help with. I would sure hate to miss that opportunity because they were referred to an old thread that really had no bearing on what the person wanted to ask, and therefore let their question rest....
  3. I have to admit that as many times as I have connected to gc.com, I have never even looked at the Glossary... Thanks Sept1c. Now I have to stop reading this thread, as I am about to blow my self-impossed thread-reply limit, and watch my total posts go up to far in one day
  4. There can only be one bad thing about referring to an older thread, and that is that old attitudes can sometimes be misinterpreted (please note, I did say sometimes). Sometimes a new thread is the best way to get the current consensus on a particular subject.....
  5. Ok, I don't know now, but I'm starting to giggle.....
  6. Most puzzle caches are very well done. There are quite a few around me, that I know I have not a hope in hell of solving, without going directly to the cache owner. My favorite caches are the ones that are concealed so well, that when you finally find them, and are so impressed, that they should become virtuals themselves (the WOW factor). Unlike banging a nail in with your forehead, these caches do not leave you feeling any better when you stop (looking for them)....
  7. I qualify as a lurker, and I just can't get enough of these forums. I check them from home as soon as I get there from work, and constantly check them when I have 5 free minutes @ work. I'm a junkie.... Speaking for myself, it can be quite intimidating to enter a discussion here, or ask a question. Questions are Markwelled, or on rare occasions, you are curtly told "already been discussed".... Yes the forums have a search feature, but alot of times it is quicker to just ask the question, rather than wade through endless search results (especially if your keywords are not quite right, which for most newbies is a guarantee). So your request of 'senior posters' El D, is bang on.... The level of discussions are really great. I like seeing so many things brought up, and occasionally I have even replied, but tend to draw the line at a reply when I see someone taking something way to personal. I'm not out to anger anyone when I reply, but some people just don't want to hear your opinions, even though they solicited them (damned if you do, and damned if you don't). Of course, there are those out there that just make me LMAO on a continual basis, and to you, I tip my virtual hat....
  8. I'll throw mine in as well. Those staffs are just way to cool....
  9. Woohooo, it's not just me then . I have topo maps printed for areas I know I'll never visit, they're just way cool to look at. Probably the same reason I collect IFR and VFR charts....
  10. I'm with tirediron on this one. I only carry one map with me, and thats a Topo map, and a compass (if I am outside an urban area). Otherwise, I have everything electronically (PocketPC for maps and cache pages). I got tired of trying to organize digitally with multiple applications, and finally wrote my own to do everything I need, and more.... No more scrambling for a specific page....
  11. Mud in the face always sucks, and that is one problem with 'visibility'. Geocaching gets blamed for a lot of things. If GC.com were to post the archived caches, requests for assistance in verification/removal, hopefully it would be well received. It is impossible to please everyone here, as individuals we have our own wants and desires, but it seems that there is definite interest, even if by a few, to partake in helping out. Like CITO, once an activity is started, it is bound to take off. Give it an acronym as well, like RACE (Rescue Archived Caches Everyone). I had heard of geocaching, but had heard nothing of CITO until I actually visited this site (now I make sure it is mentioned in any conversation I have about geocaching). If you build it, they will come
  12. I for one agree with Mopar on this. There are a lot of good points brought up in these forums, and most of the time the end result is a benefit to all users of GC.com GC.com cannot be responsible for the removal of the cache. Short of spending an enormous amount of time looking into other 'listing' services, they have no way to determine if it has been listed elsewhere. If a cache is deemed unviable, then the owner should take the necessary steps to either remove, reactivate, or leave archived, the cache. Quite simply, it comes down to common courtesy. We don't practice enough of it, as a population anymore, myself included... Many cachers partake in CITO, which is a grand courtesy we offer to the general public (it benefits everyone). Cache containers, if needing removal, is just CITO in another form.... Courtesy, courtesy, courtesy.... thats all it takes....
  13. What's wrong with lurkers ... Honestly, I'm not peeping .....
  14. Thx IV. Guess I'll have to wait for it to be fixed.....
  15. I have been playing with PQ's quite a bit lately (writing my own interpreter/converter), and I came across an anomoly with Unarchived Caches... The log entries in the GPX only show the the Archive request and previous entries (no current entries since the cache was made active again). Has this been reported to anyone (I didn't find any mention of it)...
  16. My queries are coming in all scattered now. They used to be like the web results, ordered by distance, which coincidently still works when I preview them. Sure would like to have them back in distance order......
  17. My wife scrapbooks as well. I had no idea how much stuff there was with that hobby, and now we may have to move the kids out , to make room for all the accessories! This weekend I had the opportunity to take a friend out with me, for a couple of caches. I have him hooked and he is going to get himself a GPS and start caching. Coincidently, his wife is into scrapbooking as well.....
  18. Congratulations to all the winners. They were indeed great avatars, as were they all. A special thanks to you El Diablo, for running a great contest.
  19. Uhhh... the national deficit rising one penny at a time...
  20. Yikes, the one I have generating to my home email arrived at 10:56 PM. But I got it....
  21. I use a Meridian Gold, soon to be a platinum. Combined with MapSend, MapPoint, Pocket Queries, and my own utility, it is all I will ever need, and I am more than happy with the GPSr...
  22. Very Nice El Diablo!!!! I just have to submit mine as well...
  23. Thx Elias for the quick response. In hindsight, I guess it only makes sense that Thursdays and Fridays would be the heaviest load....
