  1. nothings changed, allthough i note thanks to your very helpfull link that geoaware has this in thier profile Location: near Platteville, Colorado
  2. I nearly added this to the original post but thought id made it clear enough in the wording of my question obviously not clear enough though ! "I am not seeking to find out the geoawareXX's secret identity just their country of residence or origin" for instance if geoaware UK comes back with i live in england thats a good enough reply for me.
  3. In the UK we have geoawareUK i was curious to know if they are from or based in the UK or are based / from elsewhere, id guess the same question applies for the other regional approvers ?? Cheers Mark
  4. In reply to the OP sonic dog reppeller you may want to give the dog a hearing test first though ! anyway its not bad dogs its poor owners. ive been bitten once by a dog as i stood between it an my kids the owners had no control. my daughter was chased by an alsatian again the owner had no control. the worst words to hear are hes ever so friendly and never bit anyone the amswer to which is YET. maplin sell one http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...O&U=strat15
  5. The puppymonster does not appreciate that comment. I suggest using what I use, an expandable baton. The are small to carry and can steer away any dog. If the problem becomes violent, it is much more strong than a hiking stick. In the US they are considered a weapon, so to conceal it in your pocket you have to have a concealed weapons permit. I carry mine in my hand anyway, which is legal. The action of throwing it out to extend it is a very deliberate action as well. While walking J.C. one day three german shepards came running at us. I stopped and did the motion to throw out the baton. All three of them stopped in their tracks. The two owners came over the hill and got a good bit of a tongue lashing from me. The area is a strict on-leash area. The baton is a good tool to have. Illegal in the UK
  6. Did you read the post immediately preceding yours? As a Premium Member (which your little title thingy says you are), you can easily do so. (Not trying to be snarky, honest.) I interpreted this as from the search pages rather than the pq page. would make narrowing down areas a bit easier for those away day pq's. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx
  7. I think some of the above will over complicate something which is just a bit of fun. The easier it is, the more people (hopefully) will enter. I don't think we'll gain anything by debating this to death, so what about the following; 1) The only hard and fast rule is that the photo must be cache related and to do with a specific cache, caching series or caching trip. There should be a link(s) to the cache(s) in the post. 2) Two photos per cacher per month. 3) A new thread is started each month, with the OP stating these rules. 4) The winner each month is decided by the winner from the previous month - the new winner starting the thread for the subsequent month. 5) Photos should be recent if possible. (No debates as to what recent means! This rule is flexible.) 6) The competition runs from the 1st of the month, until a date specified in the OP by the previous months winner. (Am I starting to over complicate things??? ) Right, it's 4.30am and I need to get ready for work. 6 rules are enough I think. If most people are agreeable, we'll make this thread the January competition. I will make the executive decision that it finishes on the 30th Jan. Mtn_man - can I put you on the spot and ask you to judge it, if you are free around the 30th? Good man (not that anything ever gets over debated on here ) ill submit another one in due course.
  8. I should add the following links for completeness January 2010 Cache Log GC1T0GR Cave field house of the crimson gull
  9. To me the issue here is locating which amongst the 52,101 caches i will enjoy most. Id rather see an affinity rating along the lines markandlynn liked this cache, they also liked these other caches so you might to. Categorising caches by type would help so the setter can state numbers boosting mega trail or all day walk to mountain summit, night cache etc like the Waymarking site has allready done Also revamp the terrain to show a more handicaching style of rating based on distance to walk, elevation and surface walked on. Difficulty should be split into difficulty of puzzle and difficulty of hide. But people struggle enough with the website mechanics as they are an extra layer like this would need to be opt in sort of an advanced user set up ??? Oh and pocket queryable as well
  10. Just put of curiosity - and not trail bashing (this time) - but why do you feel the need to put out a trail, rather than a good single cache? And why do you assume that somebody else, whether they looked 5 miles down the road or not, would also only be interested in putting out a trail? Or a multi cache
  11. Dont forget to tell me so i can add them to the UK night caches bookmark list. :anibad:
  12. This is a rock climbing cache Note we sent a 10 year old up to get it !
  13. We have a cache in an SSSI (Loynton Moss) with full permision. I even have a letter from the owners with all the details, restrictions etc.
  14. Perhaps as a short term measure a pinned topic titled Linux users read this. Within the post you could link to threads posted on linux specific questions. The search engine would direct people to the correct forum and the pinned thread becomes a repository of linked knowledge. This thread could be the first on that list ?
  15. I cant find a link to the cache any chance ?? Sent my 10 year old to retrieve our only rock climbing cache , there is a dearth of them in the UK
  16. You are altering your position. MY response was to your 'right to privacy' argument. I addressed this current argument in previous posts. TPTB allow you to keep all information that could be used to identify you as private as you wish. All you have to do is not give out info that would identify you. Don't but up any pictures. Pick a 'handle' that doesn't use identifying information (such as your names). Please explain how a miscreant would use your find count to steal your identity. Many people won't even go online due to privacy fears. Some won't even leave their homes. Go figure. Please explain how this internet predator would use your find count to do you harm? I said profile not found count sorry you got confused but id like both hidden. Its a website request. As i can now see the usuall nae sayers are in this thread ill just watch it from now on. From the number of views and the number of responses it appears to be a popular request so im sure tptb will be considering some or part of it, i thought it was a step in the right direction that you have to have a profile to see another profile (introduced a few years ago) a further level would be nice to have. NB The reason i log on the site is to use the ignore list, the my finds pq and pocket queires to thier full potential without having to use a workarround. Really pleased that MTN man read my profile just wish he had said if he thought it was usefull or useless.
  17. A little clarification please. You're asking for an option to hide your find count, but went to the trouble to proudly advertise how many caches are on your Ignore list??? "From: 400 plus caches on my Ignore list an you beat that ?" Ive also found 10 5/5 caches as well these are things i want to make public. I drive a VW golf estate 2litre diesel again i dont have a problem disclosing data i want to disclose, but you can go see my profile page (i did a lot of work on it do you like it ??) and see any stat you want, you can go find my most recent logs on caches if you want, you can see pictures of me and my family if you want, at present unlike the social networking sites i can not make that information private or on an invite basis only. Just asking for web 2.0 functionality. I just think it is so funny when people say they want their stats private, but post more stats than you can shake a stick at. It took me 14 clicks to make it to the bottom of your profile. To me, the appearance is that you don't want your information hidden or you would not go to such great lengths to spew it all out. If you want to make a point, remove it all and simply post "I would prefer to have the option to hide all of my personal information from everyone except for certain people." Move all of that over to a private web site and only give people you want to see it the URL. Then, maybe, your request would actually carry some weight as your actions would match up with your request. My friends like to see them so when i meet them in person we can talk all about our latest caching experiences. NB try looking now came up with my own solution.
  18. I fail to see the connection between being able to see your find count and some third party hiding better geocaches. The courts have found that this so-called 'Right to Privacy' is not absolute. Further, when you signed up with GC.com, it was with the understanding that your finds would be visible to all. You've lived with this transparency for seven years. To suggest that it should now be taken away to protect your privacy seems a touch disingenuous. American courts i presume ? UK, also. (Kind of a strange question since there is much greater 'freedom of privacy' in the US than the UK.) It should also be noted that the right to privacy can be freely given away by an individual. That is important to consider since you agreed to have your find count available to all when you signed up seven years ago. Of course, since this doesn't involve any protected information, any 'right to privacy' doesn't apply. Thanks for the edit 7 years ago identity theft was not the issue it is today, nor were internet predators. in 7 years things change this is one of them that should

So because it the way its always been is a reason not to change anything ? on that basis nothing gets changed ever. As i said all the social networking sites and other sites where you have a profile page allow you to make it private so should Groundspeak. in these days of identity theft and other unmentionables an extra layer of security on personal information is surely a good idea and possible the right of any individual who wants to benefit from the full functionality of the site. i know of several cachers who do not log finds or anything else on this site due to privacy fears

  22. I have a right to privacy i want that extending to my profile on geocaching.com please, just like all the social networking sites allow you to do.
  23. Not a particularly helpful solution. I would have to re-log all my finds in a second account. If you are using gsak as long as your second account has no finds it makes no difference the found log GPX takes precedence over the GPX file with no found log. If you pay $3 for one months worth of pq's and try one of them you will be able to test this out. HAving said that i agree the curretnlimits vs the current growth do not match up very well.
  24. How is that any different from giving them the same response now? Nosy busybody: Hey, look at your find count. 758! What’s up with that? markandlynn: That’s my own private business. Putting a blank in place of your number doesn’t remove the "battleground." It merely shifts it to another place: Nosy busybody: Hey, look at your find count. You blanked it out! What’s up with that? markandlynn: That’s my own private business. Where is the improvement? I still don’t see it. Easy first conversation he is in charge cause he has the facts its his battleground its a home game for him Second conversation im in charge cause i have the facts it a home game for me
