Last Monday, I was attemting to push through some dense Pampas grass near a Pond, searching for a cache, when I got bit by something...I screamed, slapped it away from my arm, and ran out of there. My son helped me back to the car, as it was hurting quite a bit, and I finally had to go to the hospital yesterday, as it appeared to be getting infected, and the pain was getting worse. We were not able to determine what it was I was bit by, but immediately got given a quadruple dose of hardcore antibiotics (In my tush, no less!!!) and 3 different bottles of horse pills to take for the next several days. At least I was able to get some restful sleep last night, for the first time since Sunday! This weekend, I will be going back to finish finding that cache! (Wearing my suit of Geocaching Plate Armor, no less!)

What an incredibly awesome idea! I think this would be great for my kids & I, and would make Christmas all the more special! Not to mention adding a sense of motivation or extra meaning to caching...Thank you! I'll send you a pic of our tree this December Here's something you can try that might make your kids more excited about finding stuff that they might otherwise consider junk: Does you family celebrate Christmas, or some other holiday around the winter solstice? If so, tell your kids that you are going to have a Caching Tree this year, and all of the ornaments on it will be made from things that you have found in caches. Suddenly, you might find yourself looking at junky items in a whole new light: is it shiny? Is it bright? Does it jingle? Is it the right size to hang on a tree? Who cares if an arm off of this little plastic snowman is missing, this would look great on a tree! A pinecone, obviously picked up off the ground by some thoughtless cacher and dumped into the cache, suddenly becomes a festive decoration. Then when you get home, help your kids turn them into ornaments: add hooks or ribbons, and attach little tags with the names of the cache and the date you find it. Then this winter, you put them all up, and have contests about who can remember which cache each one came from, and who can remember the details about that cache -- "oh, yeah this was the one with the stream and the little waterfall!" "ooh, we picked up this red fire engine in that cache where I almost fell off the cliff, remember that one?" "We got this rubber ducky at our 100th find!!" edit: Hey, I just peeked at your profile, and foun d it funny that event hough we live in different states, four of your 13 finds are caches that we recently found. There are even pictures of both you and us modeling "The Hat" at the HOGS BACK VISTAS cache! Small world )

50 and counting! I know 50 doesn't seem like much to most of you, but I'm pretty excited! I'll probably wet my pants when I hit 100! (Ok, not really) Just wanted to share my 1st hurdled goal!

How Did You Get Hooked On Geocaching?
AustinSweetnSour replied to Midget Izzy's topic in General geocaching topics
I had some very good friends that showed me the ropes & have even been sweet enough to loan me their GPS until I get my own, as I am now hooked It's something I can do with my kiddos, and beats the heck out of Chuck E. Cheese! Thanks, Stu & Tiff!!!! (The Avengers) -

Anyone ever heard of "stinging grass"?
AustinSweetnSour replied to AustinSweetnSour's topic in General geocaching topics
well, I don't remember noticing any plants that looked like the ones pictured, but honestly, I wasn't noticing the vegetation until I started hurting, and it got so bad, so quickly, that I bailed out of there w/o stopping to check out the plants/grasses. FYI, this was off of Chandler Rd, or 1431, in Round Rock...the cache was located alongside the road, just west of I-35. I seem to be recovering, and have promised myself that I will now wear jeans & sneakers for every future hunt, no matter how hot it is outside!!! -
While out caching yesterday, I had to walk through what appeared to be innocent-looking grass, about knee-high. After a couple of minutes of doing this, I noticed my legs were on fire! It felt like I was being stung by hundreds of little fireants, but there was nothing visible on my legs. The stinging spread to my arms and the side of my face, as I touched it, and it was pretty miserable. I got out of there as soon as possible, taking a shortcut up the hill, rather than back through where I'd came from, and upon investigation, I had all sorts of rashy-looking welts on my legs and arms. The stinging abated somewhat over the course of the day, but I'm still itchy this morning. What in the world was that grass? Someone told me it was "stinging grass" but I didn't find much of anything online about it...any ideas?

Yup, he writes Knights of the Dinner Table. That's how I got into Geocaching - he wrote about it in his comic. WOW! Now that is a million times more impressive to me than finding out that someone like Dan Brown or even Dan Rather was GCing around here! If you read this, JollybGood, know that you have made me laugh with KOTD more than I've laughed at anything else in my life

That's a really cool thing to leave. I would much prefer to find something in caches that I hunt!

I found out the hard way this weekend how valuable logs can be! Upon opening a cache I'd just found, I discovered that it had been taken over by a fire ant colony! I was able to still sign the log and get out of there without TOO many bites (which are painful as heck!) only to get home and discover that this cache had been put on "hold" by the owner, due to the last couple of logs warning about the the fireants! I plan on reading the last couple of logs posted from now on...

I dunno, man..... there have been days......... I'm with you completely on this one!!!!

[*]Cachers are too busy trying to log all 50 to 100 finds for the day, rather than taking the time to write nice logs. [*] Holy cow! I found 6 today and thought that was awesome! How does anybody find that many in one day? Are there geocaching super powers that I'm not aware of?!! As for the logs, I try to say something about every cache I find. I know I'd love it in return, so I follow the golden rule. Then again, I'm a writer at heart!

Why I don't bushwhack in August
AustinSweetnSour replied to imajeep's topic in General geocaching topics
Wow, I just read this article this morning on the News8 website, and was really disappointed that there were no pictures! Then I get over here to the Forums, and lo and behold, a picture! Thanks! I'd love to take my arachnaphobic ex-husband for a stroll down this path! -
Dissertation research--please help!
AustinSweetnSour replied to TheFolklorist's topic in General geocaching topics
It sounds fascinating. I hope my bit of input helps! Good luck! -
I've got the GC fever, and I can't go feed it! I sit at work with nothing to do but read up on the forums and all the great caches, yet I never have the time to go find any! I have tons of ideas about fun caches to start/place, but nooooo.... I never have time! Anyone else out there suffering from this as well?

I'm new to geocaching, so haven't found very many, but I will say that the few I've found, I've found with my 3 kids, aged 6, 11 and 13, and you'd think they found the gold at the end of the rainbow with each cache...it makes them happy for hours to find a cache full of trinkets, so the hikes through mosquito infested woods have been worth it so far! After reading through all these posts, I'm going to go swap out some of the swag I put into my first cache, so that there is a little something for everyone. There's still a little kid inside of me that likes to find "treasure" too!

Yes, it's a safe assumption that I'm here in the middle of Texas And anyone that lives around here knows that one thing Texas is not short on is old cemetaries! I always think it would be neat to stop and check some of the older ones out, and now, if I can find a geocache connected to it, it's even more incentive!

Hi, Fellow GCer's.... Just thought I'd introduce myself...this seems like such a great way to make new friends! I've been thoroughly enjoying all the posts on the forum, and am now itching to get out of work today and go start hunting! Those who have caches around the Austin area will start to see my name in their logs soon! Wish me luck! JMM aka "Austinsweetnsour"
