  1. I was cleaning up my living room, and found the envelope from Geo_Bandit with the mystery coin that was sent to me. Not sure exactly when I received it (could not make out a date on the postmark), but it was a couple of years ago. The coin is green on one side and yellow on the other, and there is a #045 on it. Thanks to whomever set it to me! Not trackable, though, so I can't let anyone log discoveries.
  2. I couldn't see anything different about the Dutch, Czech, or German versions from the English version other than the language used to print the label. They're not really small scale replicas of ammo cans from those countries. When we speak of the Ammo can (or Ammo box) here I think most assume we're talking about Ammo cans for the U.S. Military but I've often wondered what ammo cans from the military in other countries look like. Here, for example, is a photo of a German MG3 Style ammo can (note the recessed handles): And here's a Russian ammo can (note, that it's sealed and requires a "can opener") That Russian can would make for an interesting cache. And, yes, the Geoswag caches are simply American style cans with the writing in different languages.
  3. You can buy micro ammo can cache containers from Geoswag.com as well. They even sell Dutch, Czech, and German versions in addition to English. http://shop.geoswag.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/geocache.html
  4. So all the logs for your wooden nickel will be on the page of your former TB? How do you like that? Just wondering.
  5. By get to you mean for free????? Why not? There would be a lot more TB's in circulation if we were able to put a tracking number on a item we want to send traveling. The cost of a TB is way over inflated. They should be .99 plus shipping. Not $4.25 plus shipping! Let's talk about the record/cd music industry. They now allow us to buy songs for .99 when we download them. So, why can't Groundspeak allow us to buy a tracking number without the expensive tags. I am sure that many of us could etch these numbers on a myriad of items that we could send traveling around the world. I don't think this is a good idea. Imagine how hard it would be to figure out if an item in a cache were a TB without a tag? You would have to scrutinize every HotWheels car and stuffed toy in a cache to see if anyone had scribbled a tracking code on them. No thanks. (I suppose people can do this now, but since they get an aluminum tag, most attach the tag to the traveller.) On the other hand, I do wish that the price for TB Tags were lower.
  6. And how many Finds were logged online while the cache was buried in the ground? I am sure more than one.
  7. I hope that only the cacher who got out of the vehicle and physically handled the cache was the only one to log it. Otherwise, why not count people who simply drive along this road and wave at each cache? Heck, you could do all of them in about 3 hours. A New World Record!!!
  8. How many of these were really DNFs that you just counted anyway? I have come across posted logs of Nevada caches on completely missing caches. The cacher just copied/pasted "TFTC" on the page and never even remembered that it should have been a DNF.
  9. Why are the elevations in the track logs on the Garmin Oregon wrong?
  10. I recently bought a Garmin Oregon 550t, and when I post my track logs to EveryTrail.com the elevation numbers are completely wrong. This is very annoying and frustrating. If anyone knows what I can do to adjust something on my Oregon, please let me know.
  11. Thanks, I had already looked at that page, but it is of no help since I never see any of those screens when I use MapInstall. UPDATE: I got it to work. The trick is to click on the map file, let MapInstall do what it does, and then let it quit. Then go to the MapInstall application and open it again to see the screens as in the tutorial.
  12. I have a new Oregon 550t. It has topo maps, but I feel like installing some more. I downloaded a map from GPSFileDepot.com and extracted the map to give me a file named MaTopo.gmapi . I have my Oregon connected to my Mac, and it is mounted. I double click on the MaTopo.gmapi file, and MapInstall opens and asks if I want to install the map. I click on Install, and it seems to do something, but it never asks me about where I want to install, and after it finishes, nothing has happened. Any help out there? Update: OK, MapInstall is doing something because the new map does appear in BaseCamp. However, I cannot figure out how to get the map to my Oregon. Thanks
  13. So what are you suggesting? Change the wording to make things clearer. If users who have been on the site for years are confused, you know that newbies are going to have their heads explode. Make it easier to move items from owners' "personal caches" to collections.
  14. I am coming in late to this thread, but I have read over the whole thing. At first when I saw this new feature, I was happy because having an option to put coins in a "collection" instead of in an archived or unactivated cache is something people have been asking for for a long time. However, this new feature is very confusing to me. First, the terminology of "collectible" and "non-collectible". Am I understanding this correctly that if you mark a traveler as "collectible" you are saying that geocachers are welcome to KEEP the item? If I am not understanding this right, then I suggest a change in wording. Second, I have a list of coins in an unactivated cache. The only way that I can figure out how to put them in my "collection" is to retrieve each and every one, individually, using their tracking codes, and then move them one by one into my "collection". Is that correct? If so, I think I will just leave them in the cache where they are. Thanks for trying with this update, but I think it needs a lot of work.
  15. I have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx and use it with my Mac. I have MacCaching and a couple of other applications. If you have an iPod Touch, you can buy the Groundspeak app (same one as for iPhones) and download all cache info to it for paperless caching. In the past I also used my regular old iPod to carry info, but it was more of a pain because info had to be downloaded into the iPod in the Address Book using MacCaching. You can get an 8 GB iPod Touch for less than $200, and this is more than enough memory for caching.
  16. no, you can put multiple maps on both internal memory and SD card. Unless UncleJimbo bought City Navigator on microSD. Then he'll need to fit his topo map in the on-board memory. I did buy City Navigator on microSD card (it is the only legal way to use it on a new GPSr). However, I would be VERY hesitant to try to write other maps onto this commercial microSD card, for fear of damaging City Navigator.
  17. Thanks so much for this info. I switched over to FireFox (b/c we used Safari and flip4mac) and it works great!! Happy caching to us! and you too! I use a Mac and a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. I use Safari and Flip4Mac (latest of both), and I have no trouble sending cache info to my eTrex Vista.
  18. Great discussion. Someone tell me if I am wrong, but I am thinking that with a "t" model, I can have the pre-loaded topo maps AND put in my microSD card of City Navigator street maps, but with a "non-t" model, I would need to pick either topo maps or street maps since both would be on microSD cards?
  19. I have used a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx for 3 years and don't recall it ever "freezing up". Then again I am not sure what you mean by a "notes button" (?).
  20. I checked prices and the difference for t version is only around $81.00. Are the Garmin pre-loaded topo maps worse than the free ones? Might be worth it to me for only $81 to save the hassle of loading my own.
  21. I have a Vista HCx. I upload caches to it from pocket queries using MacCaching software. The caches get loaded not to the microSD card, but to the internal memory of the Vista HCx. After you upload the caches, do you see them showing on the map? The only time caches do not upload for me is when my Vista's memory is already full of the maximum number of caches. When this happens, I must delete some before I can upload new ones. Is your memory full? (remember that the microSD card does not count) Good luck
  22. For one of my coins, I placed it in an event, and several people Discovered it. However, they posted their discoveries before I logged that I placed it in the Event cache. I assumed that their discoveries would show that they "discovered it in the hands of the owner", but no, their discoveries show that they discovered it in the last cache in which I placed the coin and retrieved the coin. Is there any way to correct this? I went in and edited my "drop" of the coin at the Event so that it would be dated before the discoveries, but this does not seem to have fixed the logs. This is the coin in question: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...e8-33e754207e0f Thanks
  23. This is the current record holder. Somebody must have put a cache on the moon. hehe http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=4493 Is that a single TB (TB118D) or is it a set of multiple versions with the same tracking number? "Army of Mystery"?
  24. Good points. It comes down to laziness on the part of cachers. Even if they log the item in an event, and then drop it somewhere else, not remembering the tracking number, all they need to do is send an email to either the TB owner or to the Event owner asking for the tracking number. Easy, but too much work for some people.
