  1. I need a bit of help from some of you smart folks out there please.

I normally export from GSAK to a MapSource file using a waypoint name that is %drop2 %bugs=1 %typ1 maximum characters 8.

This works well for the GPSr and PDA but recently I have experimented with

    %drop2%bugs=1(%Ter/%Dif) maximum characters 14.

The second choice gives me the info I want to print a map but I wish there was a way to switch back and forth easily without typing it every time. Any suggestions or am I outta luck?

    Thanks.

  2. I have CS, U.S. Topo and Nat Parks West Topo. Love CS. ...... The US Topo is handy sometimes but.......

    Ditto the above.

We too own City Select and US Topo. We use City Select 100 to 1 over Topo. While it is nice to refer to given the choice there is no choice for us.

  3. You guys convinced me that it really made little difference where I might stay while visiting. So we have booked the Best WEstern In Federal Way.

The property runs a shuttle from the airport so getting there is no problem. Enterprise will pick us up at Federal Way and take us to car rental. We aasume this might be less expensive that renting at the airport.

We will be doing the caching\tourist thing on Aug 10,11,12 and some on 13th.

Now the problem that we need advice for. It there a smart method of transportation from Federal Way to Downtown Seattle?

We have been told a taxi will be a small fortune. There may not be a good answer but I'm betting you guys have some good suggestions.

Thanks for any help you might give.We are open to suggestions.

  4. I don't have any direct experience with the older version but I would want the latest version of the map simply because it will be more accurate.  You might also want to see if there's a cost diff. btwn the two when upgrading to the next ver. of CitySelect.

BTW, I really, really recommend the RAM mount with the large windshield suction cup.  It is rock solid and allows me to mount my 76C in any vehicle.

    [/b]

Amen we use the 60Cs and think the bean bag is far less expensive and usable than the RAM mount.

  5. We will be in Seattle Aug 10-13 2005. Perhaps I can squeeze two days of caching out of the these. It will be our fourth visit to the area but our first to cache.

We would like to see as many neat caches as possible during the time we have.

Normally when we cache we look for high cache density with terrain difficulty 3.5 or less. High difficulty we enjoy. We also enjoy micros.

Of course it is not about the numbers but we love to see as many caches as possible in our alloted time.

Now the question. We must book accommodations soon and we have absolutely no idea where we should be looking to stay. We will arrive at Sea-Tac and will have to rent a car to cache most likely. Best Westerns are a plus to us. Certainly we will make the requisite visit to Pike Place to soothe Nonni while we are there. We have heard that there is not much to do around Sea-Tac.

We must then get to the dock to depart on Aug 14 for a cruise.

Do you have any recommendations? Thanks ....poppy of Nonnipoppy

  6. Every time that I tried to open the page for GCNDA6 last night I got the same message. This morning it is the same. The message:

    Details about this listing

    An Error Has Occured

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. ---> System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file "e:\caches\xml\227300\227300.xml" because it is being used by another process. at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String str) at System.IO.File.Delete(String path) at Geocaching.Geocache.ReadCacheFromDisk(Object CacheID) at Geocaching.Geocache.GetCacheData(Int64 CacheID, Boolean CheckForUpdates) at Geocaching.cacheService.GetGeocacheDataByID(Int64 CacheID, Boolean CheckForUpdates) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

  7. When I first got the 60CS there was an option to turn on/off turn directions on the map page when autorouting. I prefer it off.

At some point it seems to have switched back to being on. I assumed it was a function of one of the firmware updates.

Can someone tell me how to get it off again. Thanks.

  8. How often do you get these free tickets?

Is this a once in a life time trip or something you do every year?

We use a Southwest Airlines credit card and earned the tix. We purchase everything we can on the CC. I sometimes can even make purchases for work and then get reimbursed.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

  9. Everyone is invited to join us in Clarksville Ark on Sat Jan 22 for another geocaching Meet and Greet. All are welcome regardless of your experience level. If you have interest please look at the cache page "Are We Doing It Again?".

If you are interested please go to the cache page and click on the "Watch This Cache" button in the upper right of the page. This will cause an email to be sent to you each time there is a note posted to the cache and we can better keep you informed.

Tonight we have approximately 70 committed people and can use another 100. Be there or be square.....poppy

  10. First we are PM. The cost saving to go paperless far outweighs the $30 per year.

There are lots of good suggestions that I like.

PQs along a route, Ability to see who is watching, etc.

We fall squarely in the want to see stats catagory and that could be an enticement for some, as long as those that desire can opt out. Allow those that want to play that way to play and those that don't want to play to be hidden.

How about the ability to allow others to see your DNFs? My brother in law and I have a fun low key competition. We enjoy reading each others DNFs. We think the might be the best logs to read.

  11. What do you mean by ratcheting and what pivot?  All the pivots move freely with no ratcheting if you loosen enough prior to moving them.

There are two thumb screws that lock the articulating mechanism. I never found it necessary to adjust the one closest to the bean bag. The adjustment nearest the GPSr unit often needed adjustment due to backlighting of the sun or to remove glare from the screen. I use the GPSr quite a bit and must change vehicles frequently.

Loosening that thumbscrew allowed the unit to tilt. There was a ratcheting action as the detents/ridges were jumped and seated. After repeated adjustment the detents/ridges were worn to a point that it no longer held regardless of how tight the thumbscrew was.

I stated that the wear was probably due to misuse. The design probably never intended for as much use as it recieved. I think it should be better but that is only MHO.

But the Ram mount seems to be the berries in this area. I do not anticipate further problems.

  12. Has anyone discovered a good windshield mount for the 60cs? I must change vehicles regularly and so I need a temporary mount. I have the bean bag and am not happy with that..........

I've experimented with several home made mounts, but I am most satisfied with Garmin's bean bag mount. Just my humble opinion.

After repeated "ratcheting" of the adjustable pivot nearest the GPSr the ability to lock was finally lost. This is probably a result of using it in a way that was not intended. Perhaps it is poorly designed.

I called Garmin and they said they would send me a replacement. Great customer service as always.

Regardless something more substantial was needed for the way I use the unit. I ordered the Ram mount and am very impressed with it. We will not get to use it much until this weekend but are pleased at this point. I hope the release gets easier or I get better at getting it out. Thanks to all who answered. This is such a great resource.

  13. Has anyone discovered a good windshield mount for the 60cs? I must change vehicles regularly and so I need a temporary mount. I have the bean bag and am not happy with that.

The windshield mount for the Sport Trac Pro looks substantial but will not fit the Garmin.

  14. I have found the easiest way for me to manage waypoints is to open the GPX file (premium membership required) with GSAK.

Then we export to a Mapsource file using the waypoint name as %drop2. This strips the GC off of the waypoint name. We the export to a Palm file using the same %drop2.

We download the waypoints and needed maps to GPS60Cs by USB. And then sync the palm. This allows me to look at the GPSr and tell nonni what is our next cache and she can easily scroll to them with the GC no longer there.

  15. I'll check the status of credit card transactions first thing in the morning. Setting up a merchant account has been more work than we thought.  <_<

Is it tomorrow yet? :P Due to scheduling issues I must do something before next wednesday. I anxiously await your reply.

  16. Au contrair. Or however you spell that. When trying to access GCGPPP from my cache page I now get this message:

    An Error Has Occured

This geocache does not exist in the system

I was finally able to write a note for this cache and leave the T/Bs.
