  1. Joined in '01, found a few before that, early on, never bothered to log a lot, figured this would die out On my 4th or 5th HH gps. Still use the 60Cs plus and Iphone. Always was a map junkie. I used to run a laptop and map programs before Auto GPS. Way Back had an Eagle/Lowrance that was the size of a netbook, had it out putting NMEA to the laptop and running DeLorme, just to navigate the roads to find the cache. no micros, at least that I know of and few within a town. Everything was in the woods. Still don't do it for the numbers.
  2. I use a 60 with the belt clip - nut I also use a fanny pack setup with pockets when on a hike in cache. I also have one of these as added insurance. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...n&noImage=0 Not to plug Cabelas, but that's the only place I've seen it. You can drop it from the waist and it will fall short of the ground - unless you are 3' tall. Neat Item.
  3. Use something like GSAK - export to it. Either one will red it. http://gsak.net/
  4. Note in these threads - the OP states polypropylene. AFAIK - there is only a few commercial products that will bond poly. 3-M has one - but very expensive and only large quantities. Poly continues to leach - not the correct term - but close - an oily substance for most of it's life. You can plastic weld it - if you have the proper equipment and inert gas. Noe PLASTIC - that is a very general term - ABS, styrene, nylon, etc. all react differently. Poly - very very hard to do - I had a poly canoe and needed to repair it - actually tape, adhesive, etc. will stick better than glue - but it's almost all temporary. Epoxy will not stick to Poly - but will to not to poly. For the OP's original question - I'd try double sided tape, Gorilla tape, or even another magnet inside the container (magnet sandwich). Link to 3m tech. on Poly glue that WILL work. http://www.epoxy-adhesive.com/adhesives_un...Translucent.pdf
  5. Hey - that works - I could host my own KMZ file. http://maps.google.com/?q=http://home.colu...askins/test.kmz Here is a quick one - but too many waypoints. One advantage of My Map - is it's searchable. Damm it's hell being a map junkie Thanks again.
  6. But then don't you still need the Google API and all that ? I want to KISS - plus let Google's servers host it BTW - your stuff looks good - but a lot over my head. Though I managed to create a KML file, then a Google map with it. Should be an easy way to transfer all that to Google My map.
  7. I have a web site that will do it for you. Still working on it, so the interface is a tad rough. Buy heck, it's free. shakeastick.com/POIList Once you create and activate an account to log in with, just upload the GPX file to a new list, open the list, and click the "Show All" link at the bottom of the list of POIs in the left frame. Have fun, and HAPPY CACHING! GE is not the problem - there are many ways to create a KML file for GR - Garmin's Mapsource will work fine. BUY Google Maps My Map nada - unless I'm dumb. Advantage to Google Maps is one can easily put it on another site with the same G map interface.
  8. If you have seen the roll your own aspect of Google map you could see how handy it could be. NOW - has anyone seen a way to create one using gpx or other files? I, for one have all kinds of waypoint files that I'd like to add to a Google map.
  9. Another ditto for the Tilley. Don't know where in Pitt that you might see one, but maybe a Gander Mountain and for sure - Cabella's in Wheeling. However Cabella's does not stock all the models.
  10. It's designed for hunter's, supposed to even show if your bird dog is on point. Garmin has info. and a video on their website. Similar to the Rhino radios I presume.
  11. Welcome - I boat and fish - don't 'yak. Use mine for Car nav, fishing, and caching.. '73 - de N8PFF
  12. I think - though I have not (and ain't going to either ) that you can do it in Mapsource. If you don't use it - download all your waypoints into it, sort by category, select all the ones you want the alert on. Right click, waypoint properties, click on the prox alert box where it says unknown, then enter the dist. in the box. Does not look like there is any limit.
  13. My guess and just a guess would be no. I have a 1 gig and have from about MN to NC - roughly as a square, plus all of Ohio topo and all of Ohio inland lake . Unless you are going to be traveling to ALL of the areas on one trip, it's easy to load just what you need as needed. It's very easy and relatively quick to load what you need. Unless you are going through all 50 states on one trip You can also select sets from all the maps and save as files to re-load the next time. I'd go with dvd's - if you buy the pre-loaded card - you would be limited to THAT program only. If I was doing it - I'd use Nav to drive to where ever, then depending on what water I was on use the appropriate one, bluechart or even topo. fwiw - City Nav 8, all of US - no Canada is 1.5 mg All of topo east is 657 All of topo west is 648 All of rec lakes w/ hotspots east is 457. So you can see that all would never fit. US Inland Lakes - as stated I have rec lakes US TOPO East - see above US TOPO 24K national parks east - I think this IS better data than topo - but topo SHOULD be enough. Blue Chart America - no idea - but probably HUGE. US Recreational Lakes - Inland or Rec lakes - probably only need one of the two.
  14. OK Show of hands - how many DID NOT know what a Fotomat Kiosk was? I haven't seen one for awhile - last was was a drive up coffee kiosk.
  15. FWIW - I don't think you need the quick release parts, The arm (one with the screw B201-C) will release with just a couple twists - I have them for scanners, radios, depth finders and that's all I do. You would need 2 of the 1" ball bases for the bottom , same as the top- either screw or adhesive mount (screw better in my book). This would save you 5 bucks or so an IMHO be stronger. I've never seen the quick release part in person. They will hold tight and shouldn't shake - RAM is GOOOOD stuff.
  16. A hobby - but not THIS hobby. http://www.geocaching.com/about/history.aspx Officially started on On May 3, 2000 - letterboxing and all the other "things" really are not part of it. BTW - I've been at it since June 01.
  17. if anyone has any doubt about them being off, pull up there house on google earth, look at the coordinates they show for your residence, turn on your gps if the 2 arent several block s off at a minimum, shot me a note so i can retract this, mine dont even come close Where I live - the house on Google is just a blob - you do good to find the block:) In my humble opinion - this is bull, Geocaching was started with the intention of using a GPSr. When it started none of the online maps were worth a crap, Google Earth didn't exist and anyone attempting to cacher used a GPS. If the reviewer has this attitude I think it needs adjusted.
  18. you know, i really wish i knew someone in the states that I could do that. it would make my life so much easier and it would bypass all the duty crap at the border Just remember - the duty crap - is YOUR government's rules It's also one of the reasons some companies choose not to do international business. - What surprises me is that it lets you put in an order for an international address and accepts it - or did I read that wrong?
  19. You could use Nroute from Garmin for free - probably not show much, or use Delorme products. Might set your GPS to demo to get it to do something.
  20. I meant the special Gamin 'biner...
  21. Base map is OK but shows only major roads, interstates and main state routes, topo would be helpful - since you have a car model. It depends on whether you're in the woods - long hikes or just urban. (and whether you are a map freak ) The CS is as good as the CSX - 50 bucks cheaper and only lacks a compass. IMHO you need a manual compass anyway. You can go to Garmin's site and see what the bsae map and others look like.
  22. Most of the other replies did not address the fact that you will be in Mexico. None of the topo packages above cover Mex. Delorme Street Atlas does - but not topo. It's cheap enough that you could buy one ad check the detail. If you go with Garmin - City Navigator NA also covers Mexico - you can go to Garmin's site and run an emulator and see the detail (it looks better in person than this). If you are only using it with the laptop - you could get any of the cheaper GPS (get USB) or even a "puck". If you want the top of the line for use outside the vehicle, something like a Garmin 60 or 76 CX is state of the art. Delorme SA ia about 50 Garmin 60 CX 400 - but you might find a cheaper model that will do what you need GPS puck - 100 or so. Gamin NA Nav 100-125 or so This place sells Mex. maps including specific GPS loadable maps, but I don't see any laptop maps. Any of the Garmin maps that are not a chip can run on the PC and load on the GPSr also. http://www.mexicomaps.com/index.lasso?ref=...1FE38YpQ37DF3CD I'd bet there are some specific Mex. travel sites with more and better info. on specifics.
  23. You might want to run webupdater before using it too much also. Mine didn't lock onto Waas until I did (twice). But it was good enough without it. You could get it installed previous though. I think I was a half hour loading mapsource, some maps, updating mapsource, and the GPSr. (braodband) My initial lock on was in a Cabala's parking lot - it was under a minute. I threw batteries in it, was unpacking something else and when I picked it back up - LOCK. Set a find to the nearest exit ramp in the POI and navigated home..... Having only used serial port GPSr before this usb is quick.......
  24. The nut for this is molded in and I'm sure it does not compromise the watertightness. Kinda' stealing the topic - but has anyone seen the 'biner clip or a off brand that is cheap? The $15.00 and up seems like way too much.
  25. I HAD the latest - had ran webupdater when I got this one (60cx). Tried resetting. Etc. etc. Saw your post and that - try again. Webupdater said I needed nothing, but asked if I wanted to update voice - well it doesn't have voice - but I let it re-install. Bingo - as soon as it reset I got 51 and all d's. So if your Garmin does not get Waas - try webupdater and re-install the firmware.
