  1. I would agree with Deseret_Warrior and SteveOr my boss uses a Garmin and he has a Palm PDA and if the sync program is open you will get nada with they system showing it working. Not sure about everthing everyone else said but I would check this first and then check settings on the GPS and comp. If all else fails users manual works wonders.
  2. CongoRats MaryKate. More to come I hope it only gets better.
  3. Welcome to the sport. It is great fun and you will learn a lot from these boards. I am still buying stuff from suggestions from the boards and it is great fun. I currently have my step-father and brother looking to buy a GPSr. I have had nothing but a great time.
  4. I have a great idea for a multiy cache. I have never found one but kinda understand the jist. The cache will take you to places less traveled and will have several find along a really neat place. Any other wisdom that these boards can give would be greatly appericated.
  5. I own a Magellan but use a Garmin for work. Both are easy to use. I think the Magellan is easier when it comes down to getting WPTS and other stuff on them. My boss swears by the Garmins, I just laugh and say "Then why did you hire me to work the dang thing." Usally don't get a response.
  6. Nice some good ideas. I will be putting together my first cache this weekend. These are some good ideas, hopefully there will be a couple more before I complete the cache. I had never thought about putting a first find prize but I will do it now.
  7. Great story. I too have made this a family event. My wife and two kids really enjoy getting out and seeing new areas. I think I will start looking for the benchmarks. I think they are pretty interesting hopefully I will find a couple unlike what happend to your first day on them.
  8. We used this in the military. It had instructions on applying it to clothes. The military version lasted 6 - 9 washes and was highly recommended. I was in charge of the Field Sanatation Team for our company and had sevearl cases of this stuff but I never used it. I never really found that I needed it where I was and now that I am back in West Texas where we get little to no rain I really can get by with Off. But as far as everything I learned its not bad news, errr, just for bugs.
  9. Mine stays on, because I'm to lazy to turn it off and I really dont see a problem with batteries.
  10. Sounds cool. I can't wait till I place my first one. Hopefully it will be this weekend.
  11. I haven't found a Virtual one yet but plan to soon. I have been really in the mood to do some bush wacking so when it gets a bit hotter I'll be looking for the virtual ones. Ignore the person. To each his own.
  12. Well I'm a n00bie too, but so far all the cahces I have gone after, I have found with the look for something that doesn't belong method. If you stop and look around when your GPS tells you you are close within x amount of feet usally for me 8feet, you can usally pick something up, or you will see a tree then search it for a hole. But as far as I can tell it gets easier with the more you find. So welcome aboard and like was said before your gonna have a good time.

  14. I myself am pretty new to the geocaching sceen, but I love my Sportrak Pro. I use MapSend Topo and the maps are pretty good. (although I really haven't used many different programs) It's easy to use and easy to learn, I self taught the software and the GPS in just a couple hours to find my first 2 caches. Well good luck and welcome.
  15. Night caches sound really cool. I will have to try some out and maybe set some of my own out. The area I live in isn't heavly cached atm so I have a lot of area to play with.
  16. That is to funny. I think I would have been laughing so hard at that guy. I will be trying some camo ideas soon and seems I saw a thread that had some pics of camo jobs that were really cool. I have some ideas and can't wait to get started. I should be placing my first cache this weekend.
  17. I would say place it. I think that if you travel to the spots on a frequent basis this is not a vacation. I would call a vacation, getting out of an area were you frequent. I visit my family an hour from where I live and travel there 2 or 3 times a month, this area has no caches yet so next weekend I will be hitting it hard and heavy to place a couple caches in areas I know are super for it.
  18. Hiya Fly. I too am new to the geocaching community and I would say that I really love the GPS. You can do so much more with it. It is really worth the investment, and I would be willing to bet that you find new ways to use it just about evey day and for that matter it is nice just to mark a wpt and come back to fun areas.
  19. I use Topo and like the heck out of it. I'm a n00bie but it has been easy for me to use/learn.
  20. Sportrak Pro. I also use a Garmin Map76 at work both are great, but the Sportrak is my primary.
  21. My dad had one and used it to plot WPTs on the lake for good fishing spots. I was interested but didn't know how they really worked. I joined the Army and was introduced to the PLGR. I learned about maps and how to use the PLGR with it. I recently ETS'd and came to work for this fellow here back where I was from orgnially and he flies hot air ballons. He showed me the Garmin Map76 and I was like how nice it is compared to the military stuff. So I went exploring the web to see just what the civilian models had to offer. This is when I found geocaching.com. After reading the msg boards and looking up caches in my local area I ordered a GPS and the rest is history. Now my plan is to get my wife hooked.
