  1. Etrex Venture is an awesome unit. Great for starting out. A very compact unit. Comes with a serial cable, which sells as a seperate elsewhere. It probably stands in the middle ground between the Yellow Etrex model and the Vista. Unit maintains a good sat lock in the city ( NYC ) and does well in woodland areas. Go for it.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Vertigo: how many kids do you see asking for a GPS for their birthday? (well I dont really know that they dont, I'm only assuming). * waves * I asked for one on my 14th birthday
  3. I'm in New York City. Try to select " new location " option if possible, and leave it out somewhere for half an hour, on a roof or elevated structure preferably. Assuming it's new and has never fully oritented itself.
  4. What fun would it be if it was near one solitary little tree in the meadow?
  5. That's quite excellent! I just accquired the same software recently, although I did not have a chance to test it out, too lazy, now I have a reason
  6. Someone's pissed and won't be returning online because of a bad experience. Stolen 1000 beacuse it was stored in the paypal account? People advise not to store large amounts of money in such an account. If your credit card number was somehow obtained, and that was used to take out the money, contact your credit card company about unauthrozied action/theft. Contact paypal, make sure you read the policies first. Good luck.
  7. Congrats on the first cache! ( Yesterday was my first also ) Personally, I don't think you meant it, but if it's a more or less realistic looking snake, I suppose it could spook someone if they overlook it and then somehow notice it. I wouldn't place it there. Nick
  8. I've never done a cache before, but I believe it would be sensible to give suggestions if someone is having difficulties with an easy cache ( like the above post states ) Hard caches are meant to be a challenge! That's what fun about it, if it's hard you find it, you get a feeling of accomplishement. If someone gives you the exact directions, what's the point?
  9. The Leprechauns, nicely pointed out. Brain over Brian, or Brian over Brain. I at first wondered if it was a possible alter-ego ( evil ) untill I read your post.
  10. Critters. I had a squirrel pop out of a burrow right in my face yesterday, while looking for a container. It's a good idea to look and poke before you stick your hand it. Ticks. I hate ticks.
  11. Knifes are a bad idea in a cache. I carry a full/ ( sometimes ) medium Ka-bar hunting/fighting knife on me, depending as to where I'm going. Geocachers who are willing to carry a knife, will carry one with them, they don't need to be given one from a cache. People have a habit of sueing anyone for anything, just to get some money, and/or to get something banned. " Weapons left behind in secret stashes for others to find " How nice is that going to be in the headlines for us? Even if you leave a pocket knife with good intentions, it's actual purpose may not turn out to what you wished for it to be. How dangerous can a pocket knife can be? If mishandled, even a tiny 1'in blade could be dealy ( depending to whom, but regardless of that ) Lighters aren't a bad idea, however, if leaving one behind, a good idea would be to empty it of all fuel. Other wise, how nice would it be to stumble on a lighter fluid flavoured Geocache? - Nick
  12. Why, I'm only 15. Does that make me a bad Geocacher? I doubt it. I've been hiking since I was 12, primarily alone. Obtained a GPS unit recently, and found my first cache yesterday, rather enjoyable outing.
  13. I've heard of a similar case before, only a man with a pocket knife and a leg. Only problem, when anyone says pocket knife, I imagine a little Swiss Army Knife...and slicing your arm with one of those isn't the best idea, I imagine it would take too long and victim would go into shock from pain and blood loss. A hunting knife, that's something else. I still would have died there, though.
