  1. It is a 1964 Vespa http://www.brighamsbees.org/richardsvespa/ The mirrors are mostly for looks. They are useless. A few weeks ago I did put on better mirrors. I will get a picture of what it looks like now and show how I attach my Gps with two small bungie cords.
  2. Finding a cache with cool stuff is a great feeling even if you don't trade anything. Most of the time I just like to look at all the stuff in the cache. Usually I will not take anything but I always leave something (My signature item, a magic deck of playing cards). It is just fun to look at all the items in the cache. When a cache is full of junk it is not as exciting to me. I do believe in trading fairly but if there is a real expensive item in the cache, I don't expect people to replace it with something of the same value. In a recent cache I put in a brand new cordless phone (still in the box) and I don't expect someone to trade something as valuable but I would be disappointed if they traded something like a dirty golf ball or a "state quarter" but I would be fine if they traded a new item from the dollar store. It is just sad finding stuff in a cache that somebody would not even pick up if it was sitting in a gutter. I don't care if people don't trade evenly, just don't trade junk for something good. Also I have no problem with TN/LN even though I always like to leave something. When you leave something, you have an affect on the cache but TN/LN is not really a negative or positive thing for the cache since it is in pretty much the same state as when they found it. If people like to geocache that way, so be it. Most of the people that geocache don't read the message boards so I don't think this thread will have an affect on caches.
  3. Sometimes I will go on my Vespa if I don't have to go on dirt roads. I also use my GPS a lot on it even when I am not geocaching since the speedometer is in km instead of miles.
  4. I guess it is time to make an avatar. Here is mine.
  5. My new cache got approved. Here is the link http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=70459 After trying to get to N41 11.111 W111 11.111 I went to N40 11.111 W111 11.111 and it ended up being a great location. It is right by a lake with a great view and only .24 miles from a paved road. The only problem is that the exact location is kind of out in the open (just short grass) and kind of swampy. So instead of leaving it at this exact location I tell people "When you get to N40 11.111 W111 11.111 walk 280 feet at 40?(NE) to find the cache." - I was able to find a great location for it. Is it ok to leave this as a Traditioinal Cache or should it be a multi or some other type since they have to arrive at the location and then go a short distance to find the cache?

  7. I have been geocaching for about a month now and really enjoy it. When I was playing on my computer Topo program I got the idea to look up locations where the lat/long had the same numbers. Orignally I wanted to place a cache at N44 44.444 W111 11.111 but it is located in the middle of a lake. I then thought about N33 33.333 W111 11.111 but is located about 500 miles from me (50 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona). That would be cool if somebody placed a cache there. Maybe someday I might make it down there and place a cache if nobody does. I then found a location I really wanted to place a cache at N41 11.111 W111 11.111 After looking it up on the maps I thought I would be able to get to it. Because of the numbers of the cache I called it "411 - Information Please". I bought a lot of phone related stuff and even bought a new cordless phone and put it in a large ammo box. After driving about 100 miles and reaching the location I found out it was private land and had a locked gate with signs saying "No Trespassing". I was only 2 miles away from the spot and was disapointed to come this entire way and not be able to place it. On the way home I did find another location that has all 4s and 1s in the long/lat and is still pretty cool. Approval is still pending. Has anybody else seen any other caches that have unique coordinates?
  8. I am not a fan of virtual travel bugs.
  9. I usually take my Digital Camera with me when I cache. Below is a picture I took off my last cache. I have been introducing geocaching to my brother who is a professional photographer. His site is http://www.willieholdman.com
  10. Back in the Apple II days when I was about 10 years old I made up this name. I am not sure where it came from but it I used it a local BBS with my 1200 baud modem.
  11. I recommend that you don't have so many caches if you have a hard time maintaining them all. By looking at your profile I see that you have hidden more caches that you have found. There seems to be thousands of caches in urban areas but most of them are trash because the user does not maintain them. Like others have said, use ammo boxes. These things are tuff and they are pretty cheap. I don't know if it just me, but I get a lot more excited when I find a cache and it is an ammo box. For some reason when I see it is a rubbermaid container, I am not as excited.
  12. The 2nd cache I ever located was actually at a police station. When I pulled up to the location I was a little nervous it was the city police station but I continued to look for the cache. The cache was hidden right against the building behind a bush and guess what the container was. Yep, an ammo can. I thought it was kind of odd to be hidden here and then after opening it up (KABOOM!! .. Just kidding) I saw there was a business card taped to the top inside that read - Chief of Police. It is good to know the the police in our area know about geocaching and even participate in it. The cache I am talking about is http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=3827 If you want to play a really good trick on your friend. Hide an ammo box somewhere and hook up one of those exploding string tricks (you know the kind you tie onto a door and then when someone opens, POP!). After you find the cache, have you friend open it up and see him jump! It should work really real because ammo cans always stick when opening them up and you have to give them a good yank. Please do not ever try this trick on a normal geocache without knowing who is going to open it.
  13. The problem also is even if you had one of these, the person that hid the cache did not and you would have to look around within 20-30 feet.
  14. Today I just got done with my Signature items. They are a magic deck of cards. I have made over 50 of them today and will began placing them. I think people will really like them since they are unique and fun. I can not really give out the details since it is a magic trick but the first one I placed at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=67103
  15. Ranking would be fine with me. Many of us really don't care about being ranked and I have no problem if I am listed as number 23,339 on the list. I play Hearts online and my ranking is around 7,000 and I could care less. I just play for fun but there are some people that really get into the ranking and it makes it more enjoyable to them. Maybe there could be a setting in your profile if you want to be "ranked". If you do not enable this, you do not show up in the ranking system. This way those that want to play the ranking game can and the rest of us just do what we normally do. It seems like everybody wins. This web site does need money to run and maybe Jeremy could make it so only registered users have the option to be "ranked". Someone has to program a good ranking feature. This may get more people to register. It would be hard though for a new person to start competing against someone who has 2000+ finds. If there was a ranking system, you would have to have a few different ranking areas. These would be listed separately -Most caches found based on 1 point per cache -Most caches based on Difficulty/Terrain - 1 point for each star -Monthly Rank. Most caches found based on 1 point per cache (resets to 0 every month for each user wishing to be ranked) -Monthly Rank. Most caches based on Difficulty/Terrain - 1 point for each star (resets to 0 every month for each user wishing to be ranked) If it was set up this way, then those that want to play a competitive game have a new chance every month. It would also have to be set up where finding a cache that you already found does not count. Many of us will be on the sidelines just laughing at people going crazy trying to be on the list. If some people do want it, I don't see how it would hurt those that don't. As long as the ranking system does not have a top ten losers ranking [This message was edited by agentjack on May 07, 2003 at 09:04 AM.]
  16. Since MapSource is better just tell him that the software he bought you is more advanced for your GPS and you need the "Lower Version"
  17. I put a "Write Shield" on my Garmin Vista (had to cut it). They are kind of expensive at $10 a pop (You buy 3 screen protectors for $30) but they are very strong. With other screen protectors (on my PDA at least) and was replacing them often and so far I am still on my first one on my PDA after 8 months. I don't even use a case anymore with my GPS or PDA and sometimes put them in my pocket with my keys. They are the best protectors out there. http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=WSETSH01-3
  18. The Cell Phone thing is cool but Your web controlled Etch-A-Sketch is awesome! I would love to see that thing is person. I was amazed that I could see what I drew on the Etch A Sketch. Amazing.
  19. Did you know that 38% of statistics are wrong? quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:According to US Census Bureau statistics, the average Geocacher is a married, Caucasian male, 37 years old with 1.5 children and employed in the Information Systems field. Actually I just made those statistics up becuase they sounded good, but I bet I'm not too far off.
  20. I don't think so. They only list PC on their web site. I have both a PC and a Mac (Just got a dual 1.25 G4). Most of the software in the world runs on PC so Mac users should have both. You can always run Virtual PC but the map software is slow enough without emulation. I think I may install DeLorme on my Mac with virtual PC and see how it runs. quote:Originally posted by GeoGerard:Are there Delorme CD maps available for the Macintosh ? Who can help ?
  21. There is a big G on the mountain for Pleasant Grove High School. I know the name sounds kind of bad but that is the name of the cache. The named kind of bothered me so I changed it to 'G' Cache. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=2202&y=22347&z=12&w=0 quote:Originally posted by martmann:Very cool, I like the waypoint named G-spot, but won't ask why you named it that. 22. To get the sky blue make sure you select "Horizon" when you are in the 3-D tab. It is right under teh View 3-D Map button. Also when you select Horizon it renders more area, not just the square in the 2-D view. Admin, can you move this thread to the correct location or do I need to start a new one?
  23. Hello everyone. I have been playing with my GPS for about a month now and just started getting into Geocaching about a week ago. Just recently I bought DeLorme Topo USA 4.0 and have been playing with it. It has some pretty cool features and I was able to load my tracks off my Garmin Vista. Here are some pictures I took at the cache and some maps I made with the Topo software http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cachelog_details.asp?ID=221346&L=1340486 The only thing I do not like about DeLorme Topo compared to Garmin Mapsource is Mapsource has a lot more details on location names and displaying them on the map. It seems you really have to zoom in on DeLorme Topo to see it start labeling springs, streams, mines, etc.
  24. I am just throwing out some ideas is all. What would be easier to program on the server side is at the very bottom of the page maybe have single lines with friendly cut and paste info. It would just be a few lines of code with ASP.
  25. I am pretty new to caching also and have noticed that there are many caches just full of junk. Yesterday I went on a 5 mile hike up a mountain (climbed up about 2500ft) and found a cache up there. It had really nice stuff and people traded nice stuff. It seems that ones more remotely have better stuff since you have to plan more on what to bring. Urban caches seem to convert all the good stuff to junk unless the owner maintains it and gets rid of the junk stuff.
