  1. This is so true. I went on a long hike and my batteries were going dead. I put in a fresh set that I charged a few weeks ago and they went dead in 10 mins. I put another set in (that I also charged a few weeks ago) and they lasted another 10 mins. Luckly I was right by the cache when the 2nd set died. quote:Originally posted by Indiana Cojones:NiMH will be almost useless after only a couple of weeks.
  2. Hey Cannon Law! The first cache I ever found http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=3225 had your signature item and I took it. At the time I did not know anything about signature items. I still have the patch and it smells like soap since someone put a big bar of Ivory Soap in the cache box. quote:So, I either trade my patch for another signature item or I usually just leave the patch and take nothing.
  3. First of all - I Love Everybody! (Except for the people that make Cell Phone plans) The question is "Are you a Lazy 1/1 Geocacher". If you are Handicap and can only go after 1/1 caches, answer "No". If you have small kids and need it to be easy for them answer "No". If you only care about numbers so get the easy caches even though you could do harder ones, answer "Yes". Asking "Are you a Lazy 1/1 Geocacher" is the same as asking "Are you a Fat American?" - Not everbody who is an American is Fat but I am sure there are Fat Americans.

  5. I really like magic so I thought I would create a magic trick for my signature item. It is a special deck that you can do a really cool magic trick with. [This message was edited by agentjack on June 19, 2003 at 11:32 PM.]
  6. It would be impossible to stop virutal caches. There is no law against posting a location.
  7. I have been caching for about 2 months now and I only go after the harder ones now. There are a few within 3 miles of my home that I have not gone to just because I really don't care. I do maintain a 1/1 cache though located at my work just for fun. Usually on Saturday I will go for 1 cache that takes a few hours based on terrain. I really don't care for puzzle caches.
  8. I use Free Surfer mk II and it seems to do a pretty good job. You can have your computer speaker make a small beep (which you can also turn off) when it blocks a pop-up. This is nice because every now and then a web site will use a pop up for a feature of their website that you need. You just press the control key and hit reload and the popup will come up. The best thing though is the program is free. http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/Support.htm
  9. Aglet Installer. Aglets are those plastic things on the end of shoelaces.
  10. Pretty soon in my area we will only have urban caches. All of the mountains around us are "National Forest" and they do not allow caches on "their land". I just placed a cache last week that was rejected and told that they are now in the process of removing all the caches on "National Forest" Land. There are now caches within 2 miles of my home that are being removed. My Area I Understand protecting areas but they are trying to protect so much these days we can hardly use the Land. All the Forest Area by us is called the Uinta National Forest and they always have signs that say "Uinta National Forest - Land of Many Uses". The Other Day I saw a bumper sticker that said "Uinta National Forest - Land of no use."
  11. Wow - I was thinking Corn Dog and it got it. Strange! 1. It is classified as Other. 2. Can it be washed? Irrelevant. 3. Would you find it in an office? No. 4. Can you buy it at a store? Yes. 5. Do you hold it when you use it? Yes. 6. Is it usually colorful? Irrelevant. 7. Can it be used for recreation? No. 8. Would you use it daily? No. 9. Can you smell it? Yes. 10. Is it smooth? Yes 11. Does it come in a pack? Yes. 12. Does it taste sweet? No. 13. Would you find it on a farm? No. 14. Is it usually warm? Yes. 15. Is it straight? Yes. 16. Does it come from something larger? No. 17. Does it roll? Probably. 18. Does it get wet? No. 19. Can it fit in an envelope? No. I am guessing that it is a corn dog? --- I then thought of a bridge and it also got that. Very impressive.
  12. I always like a cache full of dirty golf balls.
  13. Navdog is right. People get the terrain and difficulty mixed up. Lately I have been doing some pretty hard caches and the terrian is usually rated correct but most of them the cache difficulty was rated way to high. Just because it is on top of a mountain with no trails and you have to bushwhack does not change the cache difficulty rating. I think new people get confused (I know I did when I first started looking) with the term "Difficulty", thinking it also has to do with how much hiking you have to do to get there. I personally like high terrain ratings and low "Difficulty". After hiking 5 hours the last thing I want to do is spend 2 hours looking for the cache. Of course this is just me and I am sure that some people really like spending a lot of time looking for a cache when you finally arrive at the location. I just placed a cache with a 1/4.5 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=73378 I am pretty sure the 4.5 rating is correct since you need a boat and then rock climbing experience and a rope (Rope Not Required but would be safer). Even though it has not happened yet, I would appreciate it if somebody thought that rating was not correct and should be changed. Usually I put in more details of the terrain so people get a better idea than just looking at the rating.
  14. I use MapSource Topo most of the time. I do have Delorme Topo but it does not label as much stuff on the screen as MapSource Topo does (I like to see the names of all the canyons, creeks, springs, etc.) I sent a message to Delorme but have not received a reply to see if you can turn up the Map Label Detail. Here is an example of Mapsource and DeLorme Topo 4.0 http://www.holdman.com/forweb/DeLorme-Topo.jpg http://www.holdman.com/forweb/MapSource.gif
  15. I had a web site that got posted on slashdot and I could not handle all the bandwidth. I was hosting it on a T1 and my daily logs were usually around 1 meg or so. When the site was posted on slashdot my daily logs were around 25megs for a few days until it died down again. quote:Originally posted by Dekaner of Team KKF2A:Slashdot has the following article on their site today. _(This would explain any site slowdowns due to the "Slashdot Effect" of everyone and their mother clicking on the link to Geocaching on the Slashdot site.)_
  16. Now that's funny! Was this your plastic ammo box or was this one you found?
  17. Thanks. I enjoy taking photos. I am not as good as my Dad (who shot for National Geographic) or my brother ( http://www.willieholdman.com ). quote:Originally posted by Moun10Bike:Awesome photos on that cache, agentjack! Looks like a fantastic outing even if you couldn't log a find!
  18. The longest so far is about 8 miles but a few weeks ago I went to a cache site that was about 5 miles but the hardest part was a 3300 feet elevation gain in 1.2 miles. Talk about steep. I have done 15 miles hikes easier than that. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=26147 I finally got up to the top and there was a lot of snow where the cache was located. I started digging for it but the snow was just too deep. I plan on going up again in a few weeks.
  19. I don't mind if somebody takes an expensive item and leaves a "Dollar Store Item". In one of my caches I left a new sealed $25 NiMH battery charger complete with 4 NiMH batteries. The person that took it left a very light duty carabiner (the kind you would put your keys on). I put the charger in there sort as a gift. I really did not expect somebody to trade an item of equal value since it was worth a lot more than what normally gets traded. I would be a little concerned though if they left a dirty golf ball for the the charger. You don't have to spend a lot of money on items. Stuff from the dollar store is great and you can find some good items there. Also I think a lot of people put items in a cache that they found in another cache. If everybody traded nice stuff you would only have to buy around 5 quality items to trade with. Most of the time you would just move items between caches and if you really wanted an item you could take it but just make sure you put something nice back in. Of course this will never happen and we will always see junk in caches. Just like I always see junk in my in-box no matter what I do.
  20. I have been geocaching a little over a month now and I have found that the count has never really been important. The thing that drives me most in order is 1. Nobody has found it yet 2. Very High terrian difficulty rating 3. Good items in the cache I have also found myself placing caches in harder to reach spots. Some People say that cache contents is not that important to them, but I love looking at all the stuff in the cache. Usually I will trade an item but sometimes I will take nothing but I always leave an item no matter what. I have never TNLN and I plan on never doing that, but I have no problem at all with people doing it. I always like to leave something behind. The last few caches I have been doing seem to take around 3-7 hours each so usually I will just do 1 or maybe 2 caches in a day now.
  21. I love the PocketQueries and I don't even use it with my PDA. I was able to load all the caches in the state of Utah that have not been found yet into Map Source (using GPSBabel). I can then quickly look at all the locations. It's great!
  22. It seemed like everybody was out Geocaching today (Memorial Day). All 3 of my caches were hit (Mountain Cache, Lake Cache, Urban Cache) and after looking at a lot of local caches there was a lot of activity. I even tried to do a first find on a cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=26147 that nobody has tried to find for almost a year and today me and another person tried to find it. Have you noticed that Memorial Day was a big Geocaching day? I am pretty new at this and I would guess that all Holidays are pretty popular.
  23. quote:someday we'll look back on all this and plow into a parked car. This reminded me of something stupid I did on my bike once. I noticed my crank was making this weird noise when I was peddling so I kept looking down on it. After looking at it to long I looked up and SMACK! Right into the back of a parked car.
  24. I just did a cache today http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=26147 and when I finally got to the top the ammo can was burried under snow. I went down about 5 feet and still did not reach the ground. I gave up.
