  1. Geez, what a hassle! When I mark a wpt with my Garmin, I just mark it and move along. I've used averaging once or twice, but it doesn't seem to matter much - the coords are always good.
  2. As frustrating as it can be, they don't have to publicize changes to the guidelines or the website's TOS. It's your responsibility to check for changes, not theirs to notify you of them.

You won't be dissatisfied. Now all you need to do is throw down another hundred bucks on MapSource, so you can take advantage of the autorouting capabilities.
  4. The way I see it, you have three options. 1. Take your ball and go home. 2. Deal with the flak you get from CO or other members of TPTB. 3. Deal with the flak you get from CO or other members of TPTB *AND* make a stink about it in the forums. It seems that your preference is for #3. The problem with that approach is that it sustains the reputation that you've built for yourself with TPTB. It's easy to gain a bad reputation; It's much harder to get rid of it (ask Hyundai). If you want to be left alone and not have a magnifying glass put on you for every little thing, it's going to take some time and effort on your part. You'll have to stop doing things which might be considered questionable by others, regardless of your personal opinions. You'll have to stop starting forum threads whenever CO or anyone else gives you a smack, regardless of whether or not it's deserved. You have to show them that you can play by their rules you have to do it long enough for them to believe it.
  5. The last batch of cans I bought were $1 each at a gun show. Most of the surplus stores I've been to want way too much for them ($5-10), so I stock up when I go to a show. The most I've paid at a show is $2.50 each.
  6. Don't use MobiPocket. Check out spinner/plucker or cachemate.
  7. I believe you're referring to the "initialization" process, which is when the GPSr initially figures out where you are in the world. You need to do this when the unit is brand new or if you move more than a few hundred miles while it's turned off. It's necessary in order for it to be able to lock on quickly after subsequent power-ons, as it already knows approximately where you are. Your owner's manual should cover this pretty well.

My first unit was a Legend. Most bang for the buck, IMHO. I upgraded to a 60C earlier this year and haven't looked back. Both come with a data cable to connect it to your computer, which is nice.
  9. I've been using 'swag' for over ten years. I started hearing/using it to refer to promotional materials handed out at events which were attended by a radio station that a friend of mine worked at. I got some good swag when he was working there.
  10. Shoot them and hide the body (and list it as a new mystery cache, of course). We don't want our secret to get out.
  11. No more rules, please. If you don't like hunting micros in the woods, then don't. I understand and agree with the point you made, but forcing people to place a certain type of cache in a certain type of terrain would not be conducive to the growth of the sport.
  12. I didn't complain when my thread on the same topic got closed, and I get riled up pretty easily. Take a chill pill, find a cache, have a beer and then come on back in.
  13. Microsoft MapPoint with the Advanced GPS add-in is a spectacular combination.
  14. Go to the manufacturer's websites and get a list of features for each unit, then compare them side-by-side. I don't know much of anything about the Magellan and I've never used the yellow eTrex, but here's my opinion anyway. I'm a tried-and-true Garmin fan. I will always recommend them over Magellan. BUT, Magellan has a quad helix antenna vs. Garmin's patch antenna on the eTrex line. The quad helix is a better antenna and will work a little better under heavy tree cover and at different angles.
  15. Shortcut: You can re-select "follow road" or "off road" by hitting the Menu button and choosing "Recalculate". It saves you from having to go through the find waypoint/goto process again.
  16. Cash is ALWAYS good. On a side note: Any "golden" (or Sacagawea) dollar that's been circulated will never be worth more than $1. Uncirculated ones that aren't graded higher than 68 (out of 70) aren't likely to be worth any more. The opinion of these coins by most coin collectors is that they're junk (from a collectability standpoint).
  17. I was LTF on this cache. It appears that they don't want strange boxes hidden in bushes next to a Presidential Library...
  18. There's no point in jamming GPS singals around power plants. There's enough maps, arial photos, etc. available to make jamming GPS singals a waste of time and money. On a somewhat related note, you should check out this site for a very interesting present-day look at one very (in)famous reactor...
  19. Jeep TJ: 18mpg Ford Contour: 31mpg Suzuki Marauder: 44mpg The Jeep is only for when it's needed (4wd trips) or the ocassional nice day when I want the top down. The Ford is my daily driver. The bike is mostly for recreation. The people in England complaining about the price of petrol need to talk to their government. Most of the price (76%) is taxes. As for the guy in the Hummer, he's part of the problem and is never likely to be part of the solution. If you're buying a Hummer, you can afford the gas regardless of price. The trick is to also buy stock in the oil companies, so as their stock goes up with the price of gas, you earn some of your money back. (Exxon Mobil is the most profitable company in the world). Diesels are dirty, smelly, cancer-causing vehicles. I get nauseous from the fumes every time I'm behind one. There are very few places or situations where a diesel is necessary and IMHO, a permit should be required to purchase one. (Edit: added a link)
  20. That's a nice little program. Thanks for the link!
  21. I did this one a while back. It's for 100 caches found. If I can find the original (the pdf is locked), I can change it to any arbitrary number.
  22. It's currently down. http://www.rusticweb.com/geocaching/ncalert/
  23. I love my Jeep, but I only drive it when I *need* it. If I don't need my Jeep to get to a cache, I'm either on my motorcycle or in my daily driver (Ford Contour). The fuel efficiency in the Jeep sucks and I want to keep the overall mileage down.
