Making them mandatory would increase the data being transmitted and the time it takes me to have my computer powered up to scroll past them.
  2. The GC.com search functions are privative. Yes you can work around this by slicing and dicing off line, but why not improve the GC.com search capability? If it makes you feel better just let PMs use the enhanced search.
  3. You can still use Mobi. The thread that you are reading refers to GC.com not providing Mobi files anymore. You can use GSAK and the macro I mentioned to convert the GPX to a Mobi. No problem - your PM is still useful to get the GPX files via a Pocket Query. A process that you need to undergo whether you decide to use Cachemate or Mobi. I have found the difference to be that Cachemate is a multiple page format that includes tha capability to 'log' your find on your PDA. It allows you to document time/date as well and what you left/took. Mobi will be much more like the webpage where you scroll down to read the logs etc... and then has a link for the hint so that you don't accidentally read it. If that is all you want then Mobi will do it.
  4. I still use Mobipocket and love it. (never found the need to spend money for anything else). Try this link for a GSAK macro: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=6134 It has good instructions on how to create the mobi file. Then you will need the Mobi desktop reader for your PC which will install the mobi file to your PDA (efound on the Mobi site). It's a very quick process and the result is great. No scrolling on the screen either! Some complain about having to return to the index in order to get to the hints in Mobi. That isn't true anymore with this latest macro. I still find this to be the best method if you aren't iinterested in Cachemate's extended functions like logging etc...
  5. Some obvious bugs that I noticed also. I would hope GC.com would respond - but wit the long weekend, they may need more time.
  6. NotBlonde: Careful, or mtn-man will edit your post to say you, "never liked getting the files e-mailed, GC.com has done a wonderful job of resolving this challenge, and you are so glad to have paid for a premium membership."
  7. Yes - I am getting this error: Error in Macro Line 101: FILEREAD File="$filDirList" ERROR=file not found That's happening to me, too. I was hoping I could use the macro to generate a file for my Palm PDA, so I decided to try it. Every time I run the macro, it terminates with this error. --Larry P.S. I mostly rely on GSAK + CacheMate, but it is nice to also have the MobiPocket version of the information available. I saw another post on the GSAK forum that mentions a problem with security writing to certain folders. I re-tried this and sent the file to the C:/mobigen directory. SUCCESS! This is a pretty good substitute for GC's failure!
  8. Yes - I am getting this error: Error in Macro Line 101: FILEREAD File="$filDirList" ERROR=file not found
  9. I am using Mobi on my Palm device so was hoping this would work. I ran this and ended up with an .opf file rather than a .prc. Did I do something wrong or is that a BB thing?
  10. Duplicate thread provides a link to a GSAK macro to create a Mobi file. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=172298
  11. I like BluDepth's GPX3HTML gpx / html / prc method, but the only result I am able to get is a file titled "index" in Mobireader. Is it possible to change this name so I can have more than one 'group' of caches in there?
  12. That's nice, but the pages that describe this service for premium members doesn't mention this. If GC.com knew this more than a year ago they should have clearly stated this... rather then encouraging membership with a tool they didn't plan to support. Knowing this, they should have been seeking an alternate way of following through with this promised service. Either provide what you promise or don't advertise. That is all I ask.
  13. I have found the search functions to be too simplistic. I know that I can create a large PQ and use GSAK to do most of what I am asking for, but it seems this the following should be GC.com functions rather than third-party. 1. Cross-tab search. For example keyword and state so that you can pull up a keyword for only the state (or city or multiple states) that you want. This could be included as a keyword function after pulling up the state you want. 2. Narrow your search. After conducting a search be able to search those results again with additional criteria. This might be age or location or another keyword. 3. Map search results. Would be nice to be able t quickly see where the search results are geographically. Like I said, I know how I can do a work-around and do this myself offline. I think these would be nice 'basic' additions to the GC.com capability.
  14. D is our answer. We cache with 3 and 5 year olds so we give it a good effort and when the kids start getting impatient then we look at the clue... then give it another good effort... then read the logs if needed.
  15. Good idea - and this works, but it is sloppy. The end result is useful, but not as good as what we were getting.
  16. my time... is what I ALREADY paid for... as part of the promised benefit of membership.
  17. That's great, but Cachemate is not a free program. My member ship benefit has disappeared and now you suggest we all pay for Cachemate. GC.com should pay for our license of that one... ...and my 5 minute cache prep tonight has turned into hours. THANKS GC.com!
  18. I have been using PQ function to download an eBook format... but it doesn't show up today as an option in the PQ. Anybody know what happened?
  19. How do I narrow a keyword search to my local area? For example I ran a keyword of "bridge" thinking that it would be fun to hit all of the local caches hidden at bridges. The result is global "bridge" matches... would be helpful to narrow the search down to the state of Illinois, but I can't find a way to link keyword and state. As an alternative I tried running a PQ, but I didn't see a keyword option. How would I do this?
  20. Civil Engineer Corps actually.... good guess TopangaHiker
  21. I would like to hide a few caches of my own, but don't know how to manage them after each move. Being in the Navy, I expect to move every 2 years (like to another state). What would I do when I leave? Do I archive the listing, or is there some organized method for me to turnover the ownership to another willing player? In practicality, I would expect that I could only 'own' a cache for 12 months after I place it. That assumes that I didn't place it immediately after I arrived and I would need to dissolve ownership a few months prior to moving again. That seems like a very short time... We have found this game to be lots of fun (finding), but I would like to be able to play both sides. Any suggestions? (I can't be the only military player out there)
